Trail Blazers (11-12) Vs. Nuggets (14-12)

    What To Watch For

    100+
The old saying is defense wins championships, but against Denver offense will have to suffice. While it is important to stifle Denver defensively, even if Portland allows 100 points, the Nuggets are only .500 (9-9) when they score 100 or more. It's forcing the Denver defense to work if a team is to beat the Nuggets. When they give up 100 or more points, the Nuggets are just 2-10 on the season. But that feat will be easier said then done for a Trail Blazers offense that has failed to reach 100 points in their last five games. A lot of that could be due to not having Nicolas Batum for a game and Wesley Matthews in and out of the lineup with a hip-flexor injury. Although Batum seems to be healing up fine, LaMarcus Aldridge went down at the end of the New Orleans game with a sprained ankle.

    Bench Production
Who knows if Matthews will be able to play or how mobile Aldridge might be. If either player can't go, that forces someone from the bench to step up into a starting role, causing the second unit to be stretched even thinner. There may not be a deeper team in the NBA than the Denver Nuggets who can go 12-deep with ease and are led by willy vet Andre Miller, shot-blocking machine JaVale McGee, jack-of-all trades Corey Brewer, and Sophomore Jordan Hamilton. It will be important for Portland to not only produce off the bench offensively, but quiet their reserve counterparts. If the Trail Blazers can keep the bench scoring differential below 10, their chances for winning their fourth straight game skyrocket.

Coby Karl told Coach Stotts some of George Karl's secret plays. I think we got this game in the bag.

I think George Karl taught Terry Stotts a few tricks himself. These guys go way back. Denver is playing very well right now and we're banged up. It's going to take great games from the bench to win this one. I like our chances every game at the Rose Garden and this is a conference rival so it would be a huge win for us. Hope LA is good to go, we'll need him for sure. Then again, I always want to win every game.

Stotts always looks so young and I tend to forget that he was Karl's assistant with the Sonics and he was actually coaching Nate McMillan, Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp way back then.

Freeland's finger is jacked.  Portland's trainer wanted him to wear a brace, but he said he is pretty worthless when he wears it and would not choose to wear it in a game.

LA is really out for this game?  It's gonna be a long night.

if hickson steps up again and goes off for 18-20 points and lillard has a big game I think we might be able to pull this one out especially if batum plays tough defense like he has in the last 2 games it'll be tough though

A huge part of hickson's success was Batum's added help distributing the ball.  Not to be overly critical of what was a great performance by JJ, he had some silly turnovers and missed some easy buckets.  Blazers are gonna need him to be on his A game ALL game.  I think he can do it.

Hey wait, didn't the Nuggets wail on us earlier this year? They did, didn't they?
Oooo, they got some revenge on tap tonight. GO BLAZERS!

I don't remember nuggets trashing us,but then again I'm blonde, anyway no lamarcus spells big trouble but like blaser said if hickson gets 18 to 20 boards lillard takes advantage at point guard, the true x factor is batum if he steps up and has a big game as he always seems to do against denver then we got a decent shot

Masai Ujiri has seemingly read my mind since joining the Nuggs. I was hopeful Portland would draft Lawson...Ujiri did. Then it was Faried. Ujiri again capitalized on our poor decision. Bringing in Iggy for relatively nothing yet another feather in his cap. Guy has transformed a team I called the "Thuggets" to something much more repectable. Not having Aldridge hurts in more ways than being down one body should. LaMarcus' play recently has been forcing the opposition to sag, protecting the paint and cup, giving our shooters much cleaner looks. The result has been much better FG efficiency and wins. While Hicky has post scoring ability, his points for the most part come off broken plays and/or offensive boards and put backs. His midrange jumper accounts for the remainder. Maybe Stotts will try to run thru JJ on the block a few times, calling his number. When our Blazers play inside-out, they're competitive. If they become a jumpshot first team without LaMarcus, the prospects of pulling the win out decrease significantly with the FG%. In short...as I've been saying...keep your eye on the FG%. For this team, this year, that has proven to be an accurate indicator.

I can't think of 2 more distasteful slangs that I wish would go away in regards to NBA team, the JailBlazers and the Thuggets.

I really wanted to see a healthy Blazers group play what I think is very solid Denver team.  It's going to take some epic performances to pull off a Blazer win.  I know they have it in them, I just can't say I'll be surprised if they fall a bit short.  It is a home game, and I'll be there to show my support.  Sometimes I like to pretend that my cheering is as infectious as my smile... free throw guy syndrome if you will.  It's what's great about being a fan.

I absolutely loved our ball movement for 3 of the 4 quarters vs NO.  I would love to see that for 4 quarters and we absolutely need it tonight.  SEE YOU AT THE GAME BLAZER FANS!  BRING IT!

Great win tonight without LA...JJ 18-18..and we lost that 0-20 3pt record with Denver going 0-22. Babbit had 14-8 off the bench. 5 players in double digits..4 game winning streak capped off with a win over division rival with the best record in the league on the road..gotta love it! On top of that we're now back to 500 with the longest winning streak of the season! Man this was a fun game to watch! I never liked the Jailblazers tag either..I was a fan of that team. We led all the way in this win and the defense was good. Wes looked good tonight.

They said the Blazers couldn’t win ugly.  They said the Blazers had to score well over 100 to win.  They said Hickson couldn’t get 16 rebounds against Denver.  They said Portland doesn’t win shooting under 45%.  I’m thrilled they got this one wrong.  What a great win.  RELIEF!

I was shocked at how poor Denver shot the ball.  I don’t know if they had a terrible game, or if I gave them too much credit… and they had a terrible game.

Lillard struggled.  I wanted him to get his shot going so bad, but he just couldn’t.  A very quiet 8 assist till he hit that 3 in the 4th.  Ending the game with that monster dunk and 10 assists, and all was forgiven.  Nice double double rook 12/10!

The 2 missed dunks by Hickson early in the game bugged me, but he came back strong, cause it looked like it bugged him too.  Denver was determined to score in the paint.  I don’t think Denver made any shots outside the paint until the 4th quarter. (nope, quick check says their first bucket outside the paint came with 38 seconds left in the game).  JJ fought hard all night and those missed dunks looked like they lit a fire as he finished 18/18 and 3 blocks.  Kevin who?

Freeland played tough.  I was really happy for him, and it was great to get that kind of effort stepping into the starting line-up.  Leonard still looks out of place, but credit Wes for trying to get him going with a nice ally-oop early, and you gotta love that nasty dunk in the 3rd when McGee pushed him and he got an and-1.

Mike Rice during the time out dancing to “I’m sexy and I know it”…  Wow.  That is all.

The offense got so sloppy in the 3rd quarter, and missing those shots and allowing Denver to get fast breaks was painful to sit through.  AI’s tip to himself at ½ court and then 3 giant steps to the rim was about as obvious a travel as you can get… wasn’t called.

The shooting was on, and then off, and then really, really off.  Just when I thought I could stand up and cheer, I was brought back to my seat with a brick.  Blazers took the crowd out of the game till Batum finally hit a 3 and then price got a steal for a dunk.  It felt like the first rain after a long drought.  The whole Rose Garden needed that.  I love it when fans are on their feet and the place is rocking.  Solid game from Batum.  Wes could have shot better, but he played, and he played hard.  We needed him.

Babbit had another solid game and despite fouling out, got a much deserved, HUGE ovation as he resigned to the bench. It was so great to see.  And just when I sat down… LILLARD POSTER!  So funny watching all the Denver players looking at the replay.  Lots of high fives after that hammer was dropped.

I got home to find out the Blazers won shooting only 35%. AND, DENVER breaks the Blazer record for most 3PA without a make… 0-22 from 3.  1-32 from outside the paint…just unbelievable.

    GREAT WIN!!!!

Sanders better shotblocker, better dunker and around the rim, Asik better defensively. I think Asik will have the better career.
