Trail Blazers (10-12) Vs. Hornets (5-17)

    What To Watch For

    Rookie Of The Year Battle
Damian Lillard is coming off of a career-night against the Spurs in which he scored 29 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, handed out 6 assists and only committing 2 turnovers in 40 minutes of action.. While he has separated himself from the rest of the rookie pack, his top competition, Anthony Davis recently returned from an ankle injury and is ready to take Lillard's spot as the NBA's top rookie. Although they play different positions and probably will never guard one another, it's still the best of the best from the 2012 rookie class on the floor at the same time. What happens when Dame drives the lane with the Unibrow patrolling the paint? Who will come up clutch for their team?

    Double-Trouble Hickson
The man has been a menace on the glass, out-working the entire opposition to keep plays alive and not only do his teammates feed off of his energy and intensity but the crowd does as well. Against the Spurs, JJ went off for 12 points and 12 rebounds, earning him his 12th double-double of the season and 4th straight overall. What the Trail Blazers will need Sunday night is a lot of motivation, focus and energy to take on the 5-16 Hornets. We all know the Blazers have had their struggles this year against teams they should handle. So, if JJ continues to hustle and scraps his way to another double-double that will only ignite his teammates giving them the adrenaline they need to put away the Hornets.

Blazers have some rest, some practice, the Hornets are on a road trip. This game might sting for New Orleans fans.

I feel good about getting a win against NO..should be interesting to see Lillard matched up with Rivers even if only for a short stretch.

People said I was crazy when I said we would go on a nice winning streak. We just won 4 of our last 6.

We play Denver, Phoenix, the Kings twice. Best Case Scenario=4-0 Worst=2-2

Since it's not in Dustin's rundown, I'm assuming there's still no Wesley for tonight?

Should Claver be getting the start? I guess it's worked so far, but I just don't see why it was #18 that was called over #3, #5, even #8 since most of the options include sliding Nic to the 2. Maybe those other guys are too valuable coming off the bench and playing with a second unit?

I say start Barton and let Pav come off the bench, or have it the other way around.

I'd start Pav whenever Wes is out. He's a better defender and he's seen every trick in the book. Barton is a talented work in progress but mistake prone so far. Falls for the trap almost everytime. I'd bring him off the bench and he's also used to practicing with the second unit.

At the half:  Batum 2-3 from 3.  2 reb, 5 ast, 4 stl, 2 blks  Aside from 2 turover, he's having a very solid impact on this game.  With Batum AND Lillard dishin dimes as they are, it's making JJ's job really easy to find his opportunities on offense.

Sasha putting in some work.  He's definitely not young, but he's playing really well.  Not the stat stuffer Batum is, but getting it done.  I think it's smart Stotts pulled Wes.  No need to force it and run the risk of reaggrivating his injury.  I agree with river, Sasha is the guy I want coming in first off the bench.

Rice said it best, Barton needs to learn to look for what is best for the team, not look to score first.  That pass out to Babbit for a better shot (and a 3PM) was definitley good to see.  Going 1-6 from the field in 7 minutes of play... not so much.

WOW.  Talk about being robbed.  Batum had a huge block on Davis with 5min in the 4th and got bailed out by the refs cause David grabbed Batum's arm.  Batum's been having fun tonight, and he got fired up after that call.  Can't blame him.

Hickson had a huge game on offense, and the ball movement and execution had everything to do with him having a monster game versus his average double double.  Was some of the best team ball I've seen from this Portland team all year (then the 4th quarter happened.)  LA goes out with a twisted ankle and I guess the good news is we don't play again till thursday.  And can you say enough about the leader for Rookie of the Year?  Clutch.

Batum becomes the first player in the NBA since Jamal Tinsley did it in 2001 to have at least 10 ast 5 stl 5 blk in a single game. (he should of had 6 blks)

Rookie of the month, then highest scoring game of all rookies, then first game winner of his career? He's just going up and up!

I'm not trying to be petty, because bad play calling is what it is, but if players get flack for dunking in a win under 24 seconds, shouldn't players get similar flack for padding their stat line with alley-oop buzzer beaters that have no bearing on winning the game? Whatever, I guess it's Monty Williams that should be asked about that embarrassing moment.

Basketball 101. When LaMarcus plays the way he is capable, forcing defenses to collapse on him down on the block, the ensuing results are defensive rotations, missed assignments, and close outs on jumpshooters. Better, cleaner looks and lanes with which to move the ball leading to a higher FG%. The difference in this Blazer team vs the one we all watched 3 weeks ago is LaMarcus. Throw in some bench production, namely Sasha, and you now have a team that can compete with anyone on any given night. Notice again, the FG%. Thank you LaMarcus!!!

Looks like NO didn't learn anything from summer league.  Go under the pick, get a dagger in the face.

In case people didn't realize what Nic accomplished last game, here it is.

11 pts, 10 asts, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 blocks. This is known as a 5x5 because he reached at least 5 in 5 separate stat categories.

This is only the 7th 5x5 recorded in the NBA in the past 20 years. The last recorded 5x5 was January 2006, nearly 7 years ago.

I think that's huge, and not just because he was my pick to click.

It's kind of sad noone has comment more about what Batum did.  Even doubters had to admit it was a "great game."  But clearly, that is an understatement.  Only 7 times in history it has occured.  It hasn't happend with 10 assists since Nov 2001.  You can play an 82 game season on a video game and not attain a 5x5.  It was one of the greatest performances in NBA history, and it's disappointing there aren't more people sharing congradulations for his performance.  It's always, "but he needs to do that every game."  There's just no pleasing some fans.

I think Nico is amazing! Runs like a deer, plays smart, is defensively clutch and beyond that, unselfish and a team first player. If we're going to win another championship in the not so distant future, we've got some of the most important pieces to do the job...can't wait to see his jersey in the rafters with a championship banner next to it

Right now, the most realistic is Asik. If Houston pursue D12, sign and trade JJ and a couple second round picks, maybe Joel Freeland or somebody for Asik.
