    Yet among Portland’s 21 wins that season were two remarkable performances by the very first Trail Blazer – Geoff Petrie. All he did was scorch the Houston Rockets for a club-record 51 points – not once, but twice.

    No other Blazer in the 18 seasons since has equaled Petrie’s single-game scoring mark.

    Arguably the finest long-distance jump shooter in the history of the franchise, Petrie, in those two games, connected on 38 of 63 field goals (60.3 percent) and 26 of 30 free throws.

    Indeed, had the three-point field goal rule been applied, Petrie’s point total that night most likely would have been 59. At least eight of his 19 field goals, I recall, were scored from very long range, though no one was measuring distances then.

    “The only thing I can remember about that game is that Mike Newlin said afterwards that I would never do it again against them," Petrie said.

    Petrie’s overall performance in this one-sided rout of the Rockets was arguably better than the first one. He connected on 19 field goals again, but this time only needed 28 shots to get them. He added 13 of 16 free throws, four rebounds, five assists and two steals in 40 minutes.

    So much for boasts. In the Houston locker room, a disheartened Newlin, his homecoming spoiled, gave Petrie his dues: “He was uncanny. I don’t even pretend that I can stop a great shooter like Geoff cold.”

    Petrie’s franchise record of 51 points in a game (done twice in one season) stood for 32 years. By then, of course, the NBA had been playing with a 3-point line for 25 years, and still nobody had reached Petrie’s mark(s). These games are merely Exhibit A and B of a long list of examples why Petrie was one of Portland’s best ever scorers. And it didn’t take long for him to earn that title. During the 1970-71 season, Portland’s first as an NBA franchise, Petrie scored 2,031 points, placing him on the short list (eight in total) of players in league history to score better than 2,000 points as a rookie. It was the first of three seasons Petrie would score at least 24 points per night for the Trail Blazers.

    What’s a ‘Duck’ worth?” That question was shouted at the seven-foot Duckworth often. The comment usually came from front-row wise guys in arenas hostile to the winning Blazers.

    But on a Sunday night in May of 1991, Duckworth had the last word in the fourth game of a Western Conference semifinal playoff series against Portland’s perennial playoff rival – the Utah Jazz.

    He answered his harassers by scoring 30 points and hauling in 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers to a surprising 104-101 victory. He did all of this, despite playing with a very bad cold.

    Finally, when Jerome Kersey fed Duckworth for a dunk midway through the third quarter, putting the Trail Blazers ahead by 13 points, the Portland center glanced at the Jazz fan as he ran down the court. “I gave him a little wink. That’s usually not my nature, but that time, I couldn’t resist,” Duckworth said.

    Five times in one crucial stretch, when a scoreless Portland possession might have been the beginning of the end, Duckworth put the Blazers back ahead. His baseline jumper made it 86-85. His little flip after a spin move away from 7-foot-4 Mark Eaton made it 88-87. His two free throws made it 96-95. Another baseline jumper made it 98-97. Two more free throws made it 100-99.

    “I was into the flow of the game, and I didn’t really think about it,” Duckworth said afterwards. “I just got the ball and I shot it. It was as simple as that. Rick (Adelman) ran some plays for me, isolated for me. I was able to get some easy shots.”

    On this the last-ever game played at the famed Salt Lake City Palace – May 12, 1991 – Kevin Duckworth showed Jazz fans and critics everywhere just exactly what a ‘Duck’ was worth.

    This game is perhaps Duckworth’s best in what was an excellent postseason career with Portland. In the team’s three straight trips to the Conference Finals (including two NBA Finals appearances) from 1990-92, Duckworth led the team in scoring four times and five times led in rebounding – No small feat on rosters that also featured Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Jerome Kersey, Buck Williams and Cliff Robinson. Among Trail Blazers in postseason play all-time, ‘Duck’ still stands sixth in points (785), fifth in field goals (323) and fourth in rebounds (393).

    I'll always have a spot in my heart for the big man..but Geoff Petrie is a top 4 all time Blazers player..

    Big Duck! For as great of a scorer as Geoff was, he only made it to two All-Star games. The same amount of All-Star games that the big fella, Kevin Duckworth, made as well. To me, Duck did it on a grander stage. While Petrie's teams were out of the playoff race by February (not entirely his fault), Duck was logging big minutes for three straight 57+ win teams. To me, he was our second best center behind Walton and without him being able to take other elite centers away from the hoop with his mid-range game, who knows if we had the type of success we had back then.

    Talk about going down to the wire. Both great players. Both All-Stars. Both will never be forgotten. What makes me pull for Duck is that he was an over-achiever here in Portland. He didn't do much in the first half of his rookie season in San Antonio, nor did he do much after he was traded to Washington. The big guy knew his role and played it well. The only downside to his game was that he let the critics get to him.

    Honestly this is not close but people know Duck and feel for him. Petrie is the clear choice.

    Both were All-Stars twice. And I would argue that Duckworth put up his numbers in much more meaningful games. It's a toss up in my opnion, as both players are great. No clear choice here.

    Rationale: Petrie is was the first of four Blazers (followed by Walton, Drexler, and Roy) who became the "face of the franchise." Anyone who knows basketball and has followed the Blazers throughout the team's history would agree.

    it's hard to look at Petrie's individual numbers and think that none of those teams had plus-.500 records nor made the playoffs. that just makes it all that much more impressive. Duck played a pivotal role in the teams of the late 80s and early 90s. as much as people say Buck Williams was the final piece of that puzzle, we would not have had the success we had those years without Duck. this really should be as close a vote as it is and, while i like Duck a lot, i've got to go with Petrie.

    I am a huge Duckworth fan, but this one is not even close.  Geoff Petrie is not only one of the best three or four Blazers ever, he was one of the best NBA players of his time.  I wish there would have been a 3point line back then.   As good as Duckworth was, I'm surprised he is still getting 42% of the vote in this matchup.  Petrie should be winning this by a larger margin in my opinion.  Best wishes to all the Blazer fans out there!

    Most of us never got to see Geoff Petrie wailin' on fools. But the lucky some of us got to watch Duckworth hold his ground against NBA legends like Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, and David Robinson. Gots to go with the Duck.

    Duck put up a good fight but, in the end, Petrie was too much, winning 21-14.
