#1 Terry Porter vs. #8 Billy Ray Bates

    No. 30 | Point Guard | 6-3 | 195
    Written By Sarah Hecht
    Career Stats As A Trail Blazer: 31.6 mpg, 14.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 7.0 apg, 1.6 spg, 0.1 bpg, .470 FG%, .385 3PT%, .846 FT%

The greatest three-point shooter in Trail Blazers history. Hands down.

Terry Porter’s name litters the franchise records. First in 3-pointers made (773), assists (5,319) and 3-pointers attempted (2,006). He’s second only to Clyde Drexler in six more categories: free throws attempted (3,020), minutes (23,978), steals (1,182), points (11,300), field goals made (4,101) and free throws made (2,555). He’s third in games played (758) and fourth in free throw percentage (.846) and field goals attempted (8,506). All of this while accumulating the second longest consecutive games played streak in Portland history with 198.

A two-time All-Star, Terry Porter was the floor general for the Trail Blazers leading them to two NBA Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992 and an NBA-best and franchise record 63-win season in 1991. All this from the 24th pick in the 1985 draft out of tiny Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Porter is now in broadcasting for the Trail Blazers and holds the title of Alumni Ambassador. December 16, 2008 marked the day his No. 30 jersey joined the other retired greats in the rafters of the Rose Garden.

    Schonely Speaks:
"With Drexler in the back court and the rest of that team, in the 90's. Much influence, maybe the best back court that this franchise has ever seen."

    Career Stats As A Trail Blazer: 18.0 mpg, 12.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.1 bpg, .482 FG%, .298 3PT%, .811 FT%

One hundred sixty eight. That’s the number of games Billy Ray Bates played in a Trail Blazers uniform. Though his Portland career only lasted three seasons Bates, used his time in red and black to win the hearts of the fans.

Signed by the team in February of 1980 from the Maine Lumberjacks of the Continental Basketball Association, Bates is attributed with giving the Trail Blazers the push they needed to make the playoffs by averaging 25.0 ppg. The next year he set the playoff franchise record with 28.3 ppg. Bates wowed the Memorial Coliseum crowds with high-flying dunks and deep three-pointers. His fast-paced and wildly entertaining style of play put him in the running for Greatest Trail Blazer of All Time even though his tenure in the Rose City was short lived.

    Schonely Speaks:
"If you asked the fans and thsoe of us who were around when Billy Ray Bates played here, he turned out to be probably, THE most popular player that the Blazers have ever had. To this day, fans say 'What we need is Billy Ray Bates!' He could play, but he had a tough past."

The polls will stay open for one week. The player with the most votes will move onto the next round. Who should advance in this matchup and why?

There was nothing better than seeing Terry Porter pull-up on a fast break, letting the ball soar through the air and hit nothing but the bottom of the net for a trifecta. As Schonely would say, "Terry Porter for THREEEEEE!"

time spent = porter, down 10+ points I want Billy Ray Bates on the floor. In a pinch BRB could score the ball from anywhere on the floor no matter who was guarding him.

If Billy Ray is "What could have been?", then Terry Porter is "what was". Porter is still, to this day, the greatest point guard we have ever had. Every single point guard we have had since is compared to TP and we still haven't found one capable of being able to fill his Nikes. In an era dominated by point guards (Magic, Isaiah, KJ, Stockton, Payton, etc), having Porter on the floor was so vital in our success, because he could score bucket for bucket with any one of those guys which made them work on the defensive end.

I know ya'll can't talk about this, or Stern will fine you up to 1 million dollars, but did T.P. get that Blazer GM position yet? Well, if not, you should think about it. Great Trailblazer representitive, even when he's not in uniform.

Terry Porter, hands down. For all of the "What ifs?" with Sabonis, the 84 Draft, etc, we realy hit a grand slam with this guy. Taken from tiny Wisconsin Stevens Point late in the 1st round, Porter ended up being the greatest PG in team history. So before we lose any sleep over MJ or Hakeem, remember, we struck gold more than our fair share of times with Kersey, Duck and Porter.

as BlazerBear just said, Porter ended up being the greatest pg in team history. it's really hard to combat that. from what i read, Bates was a clear fan favorite and a monster (love the team name, Main "Lumberjacks!"). i don't know really how much further to go on here. it's gotta be Porter.

Yeah why does he get so many minutes. He can rebound, and his offence is like Al Jefferson. Barnes should be getting way more minutes, dude is a legit star, as good as Damian.
