PORTLAND, Ore. – Trail Blazers founding broadcaster Bill Schonely was selected as the 2012 Tom McCall Award winner by the Oregon Association of Broadcasters. The announcement was made at the 2012 Fall Conference.

The purpose of the award is to honor an individual, or a group of individuals, who have distinguished themselves in service to the state and/or the nation.

“I have a great deal of respect for Tom McCall and what he did for our industry,” said Schonely. “He was truly a pioneer. To receive an award with his name on it is quite an honor.”

The award began in 1974, with former Governor Tom McCall as the inaugural recipient. Past winners include Senator Mark Hatfield, Governor Robert Straub, Bill Bowerman, David Frohnmayer, James DePreist, Senator Ron Wyden, Phil Knight, Sho Dozono, Les Schwab, Senator Gordon Smith and Congressman Peter DeFazio.

At the time of the announcement, Schonely was out of town after accepting the 2012 Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
