Brandon Roy Addresses Music Video

    Brandon Roy sits down with Mike Barrett at the Trail Blazers practice facility to discuss his appearance in a music video and to clear the air.


    Mike Barrett: "Brandon, I know you're a guy who has always been image conscience, and so some people had some questions about your appearance in a recent video. Tell me the story and tell the fans the story."

    Brandon Roy:     "The first thing when I seen it was really, really disappointed in myself. I'm usually a guy who's, like you said, very conscience of what is going on around them. It was a situation where I was at a tournament that I regularly attend every year. It's for a really good cause.

    "A couple old friends of mine asked, you know, at first could I take a picture for their website. I didn't even look into it, I just kind of took the picture. Then later on they asked was it ok to shoot a video kind of within our area. Initially I didn't think anything of it because there was no music, it was kind of two guys talking into a camera, from what it looked like to me. As I thought about I said 'Let me try to step away from this, just in case' and I never really looked back into the situation. I should have asked those guys what where they actually talking about.

    "It's something that I don't want to make any excuses for. It's something I shouldn't have been involved in. I don't smoke marijuana. I don't think kids should do it. I'm against those things. I just feel really bad that that's something that is associated with my name and my family. That's not what we're about."

    Mike Barrett: "So in a case like this, as you said, you're not trying to pass the buck on this. Wrong place, wrong time and maybe not just checking off with the right people to make sure you weren't involved in this?"

    Brandon Roy: "Yeah. I think the biggest thing is I don't want to shine a lot of light on the video because it's something that I don't want kids watching and saying 'Well hey, Brandon Roy was in there.' It's a situation where I should have been more responsible. Usually I am.

    "Again, I don't want to sound naive, like 'Hey, I didn't know nothing about what was going on.' I did know the guys were shooting the video, but I wasn't participating in what they were talking about. I didn't even know what the topic of their video was. But like I said, they're old friends and for me, I was trying to be nice, but at the same time, I don't want to be a part of something like that."
