At 21 years old, Patty Mills has played a grand total of 25 minutes in his NBA career. Not exactly a surprise considering the circumstances. Starting your career with a broken foot while looking up the depth chart at Andre Miller, Steve Blake and Jerryd Bayless is a recipe for a season spent primarily on the bench. But while some players in his position might curse their lot, Mills is making the most of the situation by keeping a close eye on the players who are currently in the position he wants to be in.

Looking at the box score from Sunday night’s loss to the Nuggets, it doesn’t look as if the Trail Blazers offense was the problem. They scored 106 points, with is usually more than enough for a team like the Blazers. They shot a ridiculous 56 percent from the three-point line, primarily due to both Rudy Fernandez (4-4 from three) and Jerryd Bayless (3-3 from three) shooting 100 percent from beyond the arc. And they got to the line 36 times, with is 11 more than their season average. In a vacuum, Sunday’s game was a nice offensive night for the Trail Blazers.

In 17 games between the two teams in those days, the Blazers never came close to beating LA. That’s no doubt the origin of all of those “Beat LA” chants and signs we see today at Blazer-Laker games.

“When I first got here I was like ‘Where am I?’ Just flying over all the trees, I’m not used to that. I’m from the city. I started walking around on the streets; people were so friendly to me, everybody asking ‘How are you doing?’ And I’m like ‘What’s going on?’”

That recent success will be tested as the Bulls' schedule takes a tough turn beginning with Friday night's visit from the Portland Trail Blazers. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 PM.

Chicago will get its first test against a Portland team that's opened a five-game road trip with a pair of victories after dropping eight of its previous 13 games overall.

The Trail Blazers were hoping to become a better defensive team, especially in the paint, with the addition of Marcus Camby, but it couldn’t be expected to happen overnight. Friday night’s 96-76 loss to the Boston Celtics at the Rose Garden validated that notion.

“As a team, we didn’t get it done,” said head coach Nate McMillan. “Defensively, we didn’t defend them. They had like 20-some points in the paint that first half and they weren’t off of post-ups, they were off of cuts. That’s just a matter of keeping your body between your man and the basket. “When things go wrong or you’re not winning, there are going to be people who look for someone to blame. As far as LaMarcus, he is doing the things we need him to do. For him to play 41 minutes tonight on a back to back and play against Tim and those guys who are just banging him, I think you’re seeing growth from LaMarcus. He’s been good.
After the season the Trail Blazers have endured, it should come as no surprise that Brandon Roy’s hamstring pull, an injury that has kept him out of eight of the last nine games, continues to pester Portland’s best player. After being reevaluated yesterday by team trainers, Roy said prior to Monday night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats that his target date for return is Thursday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.

“I think our target day is hopefully Thursday, but again, we don’t want to get expectations up,” said Roy. “Things have been going better. I’ve been on the court but there’s still some feeling there of the hamstring, so… They don’t want me back out there until I don’t feel it and I don’t think about it.”

After losing three consecutive games, and playing with a lack of emotion on both ends of the court, it looked as though the Portland Trail Blazers (28-21) were finally starting to feel the emotional toll of all the injuries they have been forced to deal with this season. However, an inspirational performance by Andre Miller in the 104-102 victory over the Dallas Mavericks may be the spark this team needed. The Trail Blazers will look to build on this momentum when they host the Charlotte Bobcats (24-22) on Monday night at the Rose Garden. Opening tip is scheduled for 7:00 PST.

Brandon Roy certainly has the stats of an All-Star. Ninth in the league in scoring at 23.1 points per game. One of just three players in the league averaging at least 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Third in PER among shooting guards. One of the finest clutch scorers in the game. Unquestioned leader of his team.

“There wasn’t much defense. We gave up a 37 point quarter. Our starts the last two games have been bad and to give up a 37 point quarter, they basically just dominated that quarter. Points in the paint – they just attacked us and we had no answer for that. Offensively, we missed our shots and I thought that probably affected us on the defensive end of the floor. You start thinking about that. They were just aggressive tonight.”
