Ideas for at least a 2nd round playoff birth

    1. Philly resigns A.Bynum they will shop S.Hawes, we could sign/trade J.Hickson and S.Pavlovic for S.Hawes. Philly will get a double-double guy that will complement A.Bynum.  Portland gets immediate help, will also give M.Leonard another year to progress.  After the 2014 season, if M.Leonard is ready for the starting position we could sign/trade S.Hawes who will still be desirable at the age of 26!

    2. Make up with Minnesota, trade J.Freeland, V.Claver (Rubio's homie), and the Greece kid to Minnesota for D.Williams, C.Budinger, and Minnesota's (2) second rd picks.  Minnesota gets cheaper pieces and guys who can fit that run and gun offense. Portland gets a great shooter in C.Budinger and a match up problem in D.Williams (kind of like a jerome Kersey coming off the bench, but way more athletic).

    3. Sign J.J. Redick, J.Pendergraph, and a PG maybe S.Telfair (just run the offense for 8 minutes a game)

S.Hawes will make our starting five one of the best in the NBA. With the addition of D.Williams, C.Budinger, and J.Redick Portland will have no Problem with the bench producing point and will give the starters more rest, giving our team a fighting chance come playoff time.  What do we think?

Nice Idea but I think the TWolves trade is very lobsided in our favor

Derrick Williams and Budinger are proven players in the league. Claver and Freeland are not

Hawes was playing nice this season and would be a good pick up imo

I think trying to grab Oladipo with Wes and 10 then sign Redick or Mayo would be a good plan to upgrade our guard rotation.

Then you have around 18 mill to fill our our other needs

I think we need to address our glaring need for a defensive minded point guard. Someone who will make it tough for his matchup to run their offense. He doesn't have to be Gary Payton, but he needs to be tough and if he's experienced that will be a bonus. Norris Cole and Chal, ers of the heat are not great defenders, but they play hard and always provide tough D on the perimeter.

I'm not suggesting we get rid of Lillard in the slightest. But I think his backup must be a good defender. And must be a guy who can play 8-10 mins and run a pick and roll or atleast handle the ball enough to allow us to run our sets in the half court. Luke Ridnour may be a guy to consider. Tyreke Evans played some point guard in his rookie season. I can't think of too many guys who could do the job really. But I think it's important that Olshey and Stotts find one who can try.

Ridnour doesn't have a lot of offensive game, but he's irritating as hell as an opponent and that's what you want. He can run plays and stuff so he would be nice.

If we could pull off a move for Jameer Nelson that would be great too. He's a tough defender and was usually given the role of guarding Wade during the Magics better days. He can shoot the 3 and is good in the half court. Ridnour would be my 1st option because he will come cheaper.

I think I would like us to have a few good defenders who will help that 2nd unit of ours. We could even trade Freeland for Ridnour. He would bring some toughness to our backcourt defense and has experience that would help our young guys.

Agreed. Robinson will give a spark, but he isn't as efficient as a playmaker and his hot and cold shooting would only serve to hurt us because most of our other guys are pretty much jump shooters too. We need variety. A guy who attacks off the dribble and gets to the free throw line. I still think we need a more defensive backup to Lillard though. We have enough scoring from the PG spot. Now we need a guy to help us guard the westbrooks and Parkers who we are likely to see in the post season.

If we gonna get Oladipo then we should give him the starting job. He is good defensively and an improving scorer. Then we can use our cap room to take a real 6th man. Redick is more accustom to that role and I think he would fit better than Mayo. Mayos attitude was really poor toward the end of the season and coach Carlisle called him out about it.

I love Oladipo's game, but feel it important to remind everyone that while Wes may not be flashy or a sexy big name at that starting 2 spot, he IS a PROVEN asset there and at both ends of the court.  VO has proven impactful at the COLLEGIATE level only, and his diminutive size at that position will likely create a slide in his draft stock once the workouts begin.  Big risk for little reward.

I think our actions should not include any of our core players.  Use our draft picks and trade exception to upgrade our team.  It would be okay to use some of our other team members to enhance a deal.

well nobody outside of our core players really has trade value only way I can see teams picking up any of our other players is if they need a super cheap end of the bench guy they maybe would be interested in a sign and trade for hickson but thats about it

how do you not include core players? anything on the roster with any value is considered a core player. the only players most people on here seem willing to trade is either freeland or hickson. you have to give something to get something. letting matthews go is risky short term yes. but the shooting guard spot is much deeper than people think. if you get cap room and some talent out of it i dont see what the problem is. realistically you gotta be open to trade anybody. only player i would consider untouchable is lillard and aldridge for at least another year or so but batum i would trade in a heartbeat if the right deal came along. how are you going to get a bench and give up nothing?

Oladipo is the same height as Wes. At 6'5 he is just about the right size for a SG. And with his athletic ability he plays even bigger than that. I would take a chance to get VO and that will give us cap room to sign a veteran Center and still another bench piece or 2. If we have Oladipo and we get Redick then we will have great depth at SG. Redick is a better than average shooter and is a good help defender and free throw shooter. Before he trade to Milwaukee he was in the running for 6th man of the year.

I would still like to maybe pick up another defensive minded guy at SF or PG. Luke Ridnour comes to mind. We could also sign Dorrell Wright as a backup SF. He has great length and is a good enough shooter to play as a stretch 4 when needed.

We must remember that to pick up any of these players the financial element and the agreement of the other team must allow the transaction to occur.  I also think we are discounting Wes because he is a good player both offensively and defensively.  Sometimes the grass always seems greener with someone else.  I think acquiring Oladipo without disrupting our starting five would be preferred.  We would still need to go after a starting center with our cap space.  There are other teams who want the same players we do.

Nah I would rather give up Wes and get Oladipo then just get Oladipo. We save $ for better players. Charlotte is the only team that will be willing to accept such a trade. THey would have to believe that Wes is a good fit for them and they can find better talent at 10 then 4. They would probably ask for second rounders which is ok.

Still doubt we actually pull it off

If the Bobcats give us the 4th pick we could take Oladipo and give them Wes and the 10th pick plus Freeland. They need a big man and I think Freeland may be someone they could use. They have a good young core and Wes would help them at the SG spot where they really have nobody worth mentioning.

It's a win win if you ask me. They get a veteran wing who can shoot the ball well and we get the defensive player and athlete that we need at SG. Oladipo said he would love to come to Portland so I guess he would be happy with being drafted here. And he would help us get into the playoffs at the very least.

Char. r a bunch o' chumps lead by the biggest 1 of them all, MJ!  Hahaha!  1 of the best players of all time... absolutely.  Ultra crappy w/ basketball operations... ABSOLUTELY!  Let's fleece Jordan! :)

Here's the deal w/ Char. that I would like to c THAT IS FEASIBLE PLUS it leaves us w/ MOST IF not MORE OF our cheddar:  Char. gets from us Wes, Freeland, & #10 pick; we get from them Biyombo, #4 (to take Oladipo), & M...K...G!!!  The $ works!  Char. assets come to $10,632,140 & Por. assets equal $11,384,132 (we'd get a trade exception of ~$751,992).  The question might b asked, "well... if this is so, can't we get all that from Char.(they would get the trade exception instead of ~$1,113,308) & NOT give up our #10?"  I don't think even Jordan would allow us to take him like that ;)  In order to sucker Jordan in, I think we need to give him our #10 also to give them a chance to further replace Biyombo/solve their center issues too.

Woah woah woah Simpson lol I love you but,

NO way that deal goes through! I know MJ is a bad GM but even he wouldnt do such a bad deal. MKG, Biyombo are their youngest players on their team. They're the core of that crappy team. Even MJ wouldnt give up 3 lottery picks (MKG #2, Biyombo #7) for:

    The 10th Pick

    Wes Matthews

    and Freeland

You have to see how CRAZYY lopsided that is. Thats equivalent to  us doing :

Lamarcus, Batum, 10th pick for Tyrus Thomas, Dasagana Diop, 4th pick, MKG

@ Siccolo, hahaha! ;)  Lopsided for us yes (maybe not as extreme as ur illustration but I personally too think it's more in our favor ;) but I wouldn't say immediately & there's still a gamble w/ Oladipo not turning out like we think he will (I think dude's eventually gonna fill the void of Wes just fine ;)  Really, I think this trade would b @ least considered bc of the amount of uncertainty we take on.  For Wes, they'd give MKG bc he's kinda ur poorman's Wes (can't score it like Wes ;)  Biyombo has no offensive game (& won't ever really get 1) BUT, he's the shotblocker/defensive presence that we need coupled w/ Meyers to make for a deadly force! :)  Jordan should consider giving up Biyombo bc in this draft, there r a lot of centers (I wouldn't put it past Jordan for him to think that he can find an answer @ the 5 in this draft; don't tell Jordan but none of them will probably b as good as Biyombo ;)  Also, once players have been in the league for a while, where they were pick no longer makes much difference; it becomes all about their skills, ceiling, & how much they cost; i.e. Kwame Brown-thing & other busts; ol' Kwamers may have been drafted #1 BUTT he's DEFINITELY a big ol' #2! ;p

    hahahah

Yeah but MKG and Biyombo still have the potential to be better than anyone they can get at 10 and better than Wes.

The reason Charlotte does 10th and Wes for the 4th is beacause they get two players for 1. They need talent and Oladipo is similar to MKG but with better shooting. They dont wanna lose assets, they want to gain assets. We do it to clear space and get a solid new SG

So this trade idea on an Orlando Magic fan site...

    Magic get:

sign and trade of JJ Hickson, 10th pick, Will Barton, and the 39th pick

Blazers get: Aaron Afflalo, Glen Davis

this eats up quite a chuck of the cap, but a cheap option could be to sign someone like Dalambert. Gives us a much needed spark from a sixth man, whether that'd be Afflalo or Wesley, and also supplying a solid backup to Aldridge

No way Davis plays center that's why I said sign Dalembert for a reasonable contract. Siccolo I agree completely Davis' contract is a nightmare, but Afflalo wouldn't be a terrible pickup. I just saw it and thought I would post to see reactions. I for one hope that it doesn't, besides I'd rather see the Bledsoe for Afflalo deal go down for Orlando...

Looks like Dalembert is coming up a lot. He did average 2 blocks a game for the 1st 10 years of his career and is quite athletic. He is a low maintenance guy with a mid level salary. And at his age we could get 3 good years out of him and he would be a good tutor for leonard.

Dalembert also does a good job protecting the rim by jumping straight up. He changes shots and rebounds better than average. I'd like to get him and maybe another veteran big man. I'm thinking of Chris Wilcox who I have mentioned before on another thread. He would bring toughness and veteran know how to the front court. He can play PF and C so he would be an ideal backup and is only 32 next season.
