Batum's Production Is Worth The MAX
Based on that figure and WARP projections for the full 2012-13 season, many players in the league (38 in all) are worth more than the lowest max level of $13.7 million. Let's focus instead on players worth more than $16.4 million, since that is now the maximum amount for many star players. That yields a group of 19 players -- basically somewhere between the number of players on All-NBA teams (15) and on the All-Star teams (24). They can further be divided into a few categories.

Of the 19 players valued at more than the max, 14 are All-Stars. Three others (Curry, Gasol and Pierce) were prominent omissions. That leaves two oddball players, both of whom rate better by WARP than other all-in-one metrics. Anderson and Batum have in common that they both shoot a lot of 3s (Anderson leads the NBA in attempts and Batum is fourth), which WARP rewards because of the value of floor spacing. Both are enjoying strong seasons, and Anderson in particular was a great buy for the Hornets last summer (he'll make $34 million over the next four years, slightly less than Jeff Green), but they're not really max guys.

I'm not sure if I would agree that Batum's production has been MAX-worthy, but he has certainly lived up to his current contract, which is all we can ask for as fans.

It interesting to see one man's take. Hollinger's stats which got him a job in an NBA front office come across as more reliable to me. He doesn't have Batum rated that high and neither do I. Batum is at least a top 50 player. Can he get to the next level certainly has been worth 11 million a year sure has. Another 5 million more though not yet.

I always find it interesting to see how people validate or invalidate information and sources based on their biases.

I always find it interesting how people interpret stats to backup their bias.  WARP rewards 3pt attempts because of the value of "floor spacing".  The Blazers are ranked 28th in the league in points scored in the paint.  Yes, definitely max Batum because WARP says so LOL.

It is hardly a slight to call Batum a top 40 NBA player and to suggest he has been worth the very large 11 million a year contract we are paying him. Considering Pelton created his WARP stat his article is in itself completely based on bias.

Batum is great but he is not in the top 20 yet. In fact on my list he is the 6th best SF in basketball.

    Lebron

    Durant

    Carmelo

    Paul George

and barely Luol Deng are the players I have above him just at SF.

joint option for year three at like 8 million. Then if he works out you got him for a bargain for 2-3 years and if not it costs only 1.2 million for next year.

Earlier in the combine prodcast they showed Shazamm''s shooting from the 3 pt distance.  He was 50% from the corners and 20% from the other three directions out front.  Reminds me a lot of Steve Blake''s shooting touch.  When driving h...

Barnes would not fit in Portland. His attitude is completely wrong. Sanders has anger problems, but is not an bad guy. Barnes is dirty. Tony Allen already has an excellent core in Memphis. Z-Bo, Gasol, and Conley. He has finally found a team which...

Rookies are fine a team should be able to carry 5 of them easily. The problem with us last year was we had no depth in front of the rookies. Lillard and Leonard as lottery picks should have gotten lots of playing time, which they did. However, Bar...
