Ok, so is this just me or is Luke Babbitt actually playing alright in comparison to what he was put out? I was very critical of him in the past but I feel like he has slightly stepped it up in the past couple of games. Your thoughts?

I agree completely. I think after Olshey sent two guys to Idaho twice already this month that Babbit and Smith have stepped up their game. In Lukes case his defense has improved and he's rebounding. He set the screen that gave Lillard the game winner against NO. I also have critisized the Defensive coordinator Canales for the lack of defense across the board but he's apparently made the right adjustments or inspired the guys to adjust. Either way it's good to see!

I actually saw him drive to the lane, starting behind the 3pt line, and not get stopped after 2 steps... he actually scored at the rim.  I think he's starting to understand that he has to go all in if he is to beat a defender to the basket and commit.  When he's not sure if he will pull up or pass, he just gets stuck picking up his dribble after 1 or 2 bounces.

I have also noticed his defense has improved.  He actually draws my attention on defense, because he looks like he is actually playing it.  It's very encouraging to see.

That's a really good question blaser. I'm really hoping that he will develop into a quality player really quickly so that we can actually see him develop into what he was supposed to become. I've been to a few games and he always lights up the hoop in pre-game and then just suffers when it comes to real game time action. If we could tap that shooting potential, he would be really nice to have.

I really do not think it would cost us that much to keep him. May three years for $10M.  If he continues to develop like he has been he is worth the risk.  Prioirty right now personally is to get JJ locked in.

As much as we all would love to keep JJ, he's looking at a cap hold of like over 7 mil for next season.  I'll try to dig up the actual number.  My point being, if we sign JJ, what do the Blazers to at Center?  Do you believe JJ is a sustainable starting Center for making a deep playoff run?  One of these days I want to lay out the cap situation, provide some actual numbers, to guide discussion on what feasable solutions will be available.  OR if I wait long enough, some other genius will have done it for me and I can just quote them.

I think JJ is going to command 7.2mil next season if I remember correctly. I think getting a legit big man will occur if we shed salary we're commited to this season. Pekovic woud be perfect and not be a max player. I believe he's unrestricted as well. I'd like to keep JJ and have him come off the bench or stagger in the rotation. The guys we'd give up to get a big would probably be Freeland, Jeffries, Smith and Babbit. Neil may surprise us come the trade deadline but only if our assets show some value. Utah is going to move Jefferson and Millsap and they need shooters on the wings. Luke may develop into a weapon, he's sure working for a roster spot now. He's lights out with space but doesn't shoot well with a defender in his face so far.

You think Utah will move them both?  I thought it would be more like a Batum/Wallace scenario, where they pick one and ship the other.  It's too bad those 2 aren't taller and play Center.

I heard they are both on the table. Millsap is undersized but plays like Barkley used to..guy is a banger

equating Luke to a beast is like saying" Extreme Crotcheting". Not knocking Luke's play of late but just sayin. I have been in Lukes corner for a long time but after the first couple of games this year I have to honestly say I almost left it. I honestly think that Nate almost ruined him, If he was still the coach he would have. His first year if Luke shot the ball he would be pulled whether he made it or not than got sent down to the D league. Probably why I do not have such a high regard for Nate, Luke was not the only one just the most obvious.

I do not think Luke will ever be aa starter , although he could suprise all of us which would be a good thing, He has got the range of Petrie and almost as sweet a shot it would be nice to get his confidence all the way back.

Jefferson is due over 15 mil this season..he's not cheap..he's only 28 I think but problem is, he's slow. Of the two I'd take Millsap or Pek anyday.

Extreme Crotcheting..the next olympic sport! Love it! To me Luke's upside is he becomes Peja Stoyakovic..a career bench shooter tall enough to shoot over most wings.

I don't really see us making a trade for one of Utah's bigs any time soon. Luke would really have to light up the scoreboard for any interest whatsoever and there is not really a player to ship with him to make them want to do a trade or to even match the salaries.

What a great game for Luke vs Denver.  He has really made a vast improvement on his hustle and offense and defense.  Was an awesome feeling to give him a standing ovation when he fouled out.  He just looks like a different player and it's really great to see.

No way we go after anyone from Utah.  Who needs Milsap when you can sign JJ for less?  And no thanks on Jefferson, or his monster contract.

Agree with Fanatic on all points.

Luuuuuuuuuuke put up 14 & 8 tonight before fouling out. Impressive maturation taking place before our eyes. Happy seeing the kid have some success finally. The standing O Fanatic mentioned couldn't be more symbolic of why this market and our fans are so special imo.

It is great to see him be trusted by Stotts.  Nate just had this guy riding the bench and everyone wanted to dump him.  I see some LT value in this kid as long he continues to improve like he has been.  You can see his maturity improve every game and it is great to see.

Stotts is a really sharp coach. He put Luke in a position to succeed knowing LA was out and we needed to fill the scoring void and Luke came through. It's easy to forget that Stotts is coaching this team for the first time and learning as we go along. I like that he develops players and if nothing else..our bench and rookies are getting experience that's rare in the league. We're still 6 games from the 30 game ceiling he talked about preseason and we're 500 now...right where my highest expectations were in the beginning. We may just exceed those expectations. The improved defense has been a big factor and Luke has shown some of that over the last few games.
