Thanks to 'swoosh' and MJ, Nike's Knight lands in Hall

Phil Knight laughed and said, "We were just trying to sell a few shoes. We had no idea." It was impossible to envision, in the mid-1980s, how the world would change.

His company, Nike, ended up selling more than a few Air Jordan shoes. The namesake, young Michael Jordan, grew into a global advertising sensation. Unimaginable profits streamed in. The standards of athletes and the marketing of athletic apparel changed forever. And so Phil Knight, a former middle-distance runner at Oregon who has not played organized basketball since high school, a business magnate who has never worked for an NBA team or college hoops program, makes the basketball Hall of Fame.

Yes, Mars Blackmon. It's definitely the shoes.

The Nike machine is obviously not based on one superstar in one sport. But the Air Jordan phenomenon was unquestionably a business and cultural game-changer for the NBA around the globe. That achievement became the pinpoint for Knight being named to the Hall.

I think, to some extent, the game's and Nike's growth have paralleled each other," Knight said. "You can really kind of look at that moment and that player. Michael Jordan has done more to expand the game probably than any one individual. I think we were not just along for the ride, but I think we helped promote that. That was really the start. That 1984 year really was when it kind of was on its way to overdrive."
Congrats to Phil for making the best Sneaks in the world.

Avia is an American shoe company founded in Oregon in 1979 by Jerry Stubblefield, an American entrepreneur and former record-setting discus thrower at the University of Oregon. Stubblefield reportedly came up with the word "avia" (derived from the Latin "avis," meaning "bird"  while on a jet flight, and decided to use it as a brand name for a sports shoe to suggest aviation.

The Partnership that Started it All

The Nike Cortez would have never been created if it were not for the joining of the two founders of Nike Inc.: Bill Bowerman (2/1911-12/1999) and Phil Knight (2/1938- ). Both men, rather obsessed with athleticism, met in 1957: Bowerman who was the track and field coach at the University of Oregon and Knight who competed on Bowermans team. The two friends became business partners soon after Knight purchases a large sum of Oniksuka Tiger brand athletic shoes from Japan. The initial name of their business was name Blue Ribbon Sports and was later changed to Nike in 1972.[1] Although the business was distributing decent athletic shoes Bowerman believed that athletes deserved a better track shoe than what was currently on the market. After years of designing and experimenting, Bowerman finalized his image of the Nike Cortez in 1968; and in 1972 the shoe was released.

Endorsements? Meyers Leonard: "I'm getting ready to go with Nike, I believe. Other than that, I have my trading card deals. I'm waiting for some other things to pop up. We've shied away from a few things, as far as my agency goes, but we're going to get some things set in stone soon

I wonder how much Phil's original toaster oven would go for that he made the first shoes in for Prefontaine in Eugene? I always thought Phil was a good reason to want to play in Portland. I appreciate all he's done for sports in Oregon but I'll always be an Adidas fan. Bring back the hightops with the ankle supports Phil! Congrats to him for his induction into the Hall of Fame!

Jermaine O''Neal, Drazen, Z-Bo, Sheed (I know he was already a star but still). Also Drazen was buried under Drexler and Porter.

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.
