    Via Marc Spears-
Blazers G Jamal Crawford will opt-out of his contract paying $5.25 million next season, source tells @YahooSports. The move will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent for the second year in a row. Crawford has a June 15 deadline to opt-out of the final year of his contract and is expected to exercise it soon.
Now this isn't official, but the guys over at Yahoo! are really dialed in when it comes to all things NBA. And if you listened to any of Crawford's Exit Interview, you could tell he's tired of playing on one-year contracts and wants some long-term security. And, since he's in his early 30's, it's probably his last chance at getting a multi-year deal.

It's pretty much official now. Jamal Crawford tells Chris Haynes he's opting out.
Yeah, I'm opting out,” Crawford told CSNNW.com. “After talking with my agent, it was a no-brainer. The whole plan all along was to secure a one-year deal so I could hit the market again this offseason.”
I had a couple of playoff teams that offered me a deal that was double what I was making this year but I wanted to wait. Now I get the chance to go through an entire free agency period due to having a rushed offseason last year.”
    I really appreciate this-
At the end of the day, I wanted to do it (opt out) quick out of respect for Portland and just because I've opted out doesn't mean I don't want to return. But I'll definitely looking at all my options this summer.”

This is great news, because it frees up $5.25 million in cap space and allows Elliot Williams more time this fall. Even though he is a little injury prone, Elliot's play and development this year really made Jamal expandable going forward.

Agree with DHawes.  Not sure I'm willing to place that kind of responsibility in EW's lap yet however.  With this team's infamously dark history with injuries, particularly KNEE injuries, I will be holding my breath and on the edge of my seat watching Williams play until he notches at least a full season without incident.  The young man does seem to have a bright future in front of him and is, and always has been, a reason for my continued interest in this team.  With more time, perhaps even a consistent rotational role, will come the scouting and the real barometer.

Jamal has taken some criticism lately, notably on this board.  For me, I still believe JC is a high character guy, ESPECIALLY relative to what has become a primadonna league.

I am glad this is happening! He is a ball hog, almost as much as felton, who i still love but isnt worth our time! Defense leads to offense and Crawford cant play defense! If we have good D we can not let teams score so many points like the last few games where they scored like 100 points! Lets use Matthews! he did great while Roy was injured last year!

    Just a thought

A good thing in the balance.  I don't know about Crawford being a ball hog.  Realize there were a few people on the team who couldn't or didn't want to handle the ball or shoot this year.  Lots of guys standing around and/or hiding in the corner all season.  Crawford doesn't have that problem.  Unfortunately his shot was stone cold all season.  If he had shot his career percentage or been the clutch scorer that he has been in the past, things would look different.  He lost the fans who got hypersensitive over some things he said, and he wants to find a place to retire.  A win-win situation for all.

I look at it like this: Portland is an amazing, stand-up, quality organization. Crawford is an excellent player and professional. But sweet lord was the combination bad for EVERYONE! He doesn't belong here, especially on a team that has been trying to hang its hat on the defensive side of the court. I would much rather have Wesley on the floor (especially based on his post-Nate performance). And with Elliot Williams healthy and Nolan's size and ability to play off the ball, I think we are the most solid at the 2 guard. Yes, even without Brandon. The money we get from Crawford's option allows for a starting PG, SF, or Center. And those are the areas we need to target. I think the move for Crawford was based on losing our isolation guard. Naturally, the organization looked for another player with a similar style and who would play the same position. Hindsight 20/20. Thanks for the time here, Jamal. Good luck.

Now, let's turn this team into winners again. Or do we need a GM and a coach for that?... Shoot.

Jamal needs to play the 6th man if he stays and needs a great point guard to find him where he needs the ball. I don't agree that the offseason was rushed though, seems like the lockout prolonged the offseason, not shortened it. With the right roster and coach, Jamal is an asset but not for big money

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.
