From what I read they are tagging "at the Rose Garden" behind Moda Health center. On a positive note, it's good to have the word "health" involved with anything Blazer related!

I find this ironic coming from someone whose avatar is Bill Walton... you know the Blazers didn't play in the Rose Garden when Walton won a championship, right?

I was concerned it would be something like the Moda Health Garden or something like that. In the grand scheme of things, The Moda Center is a much better name than over half the other arenas in the league. Call it what you want, but denial about an arena name change is a little petty if you ask me.

To cap it off, any "true" Blazer fan doesn't give a flying [fudge] if they're playing on some concrete playground in Gresham as long as it's BLAZER BASKETBALL. It's still Rip City, it's still the Blazers, and it's still the Rose Quarter. I don't see the point in complaining about it.

Oh, by the way, it's a good business deal and might give Allen more money to spend on the luxury tax if people like LaMarcus and Lillard stay on board for the rest of their careers.

You probably didn't really notice, Simpson, but the Blazers played in Memorial Coliseum until 1995. They've only been in the Rose garden for 18 years. For a 43 year franchise, it seems silly to freak out about an arena name that's only been part of the team for less than half their franchise history. I'm personally thankful that Allen sold the naming rights to the arena rather than selling the entire franchise... I'm just trying to add perspective.

@ D_pickett, no worries, I'm glad u added perspective ;)  I've actually never lived in Portland/Oregon; but every time I've been, it's been awesome :)  Portland is my fav. city in the US & Oregon is my fav. State.  I actually started following the Blazers in '89; I remember the change in '95.  I love OUR team & yup, the name of the building will never change how I feel about OUR team ;)  As long as the name of the building isn't too bad, I've no actual beef (Moda Center is fine ;)  What I said ^, I didn't wanna get too much into the change that u mentioned; my stance is/was really just that I like the Rose Garden name & to me, that's what I will always c it as/call it (even though when I started/b4 following OUR Blazers, it was Memorial Coliseum ;)

I think it a joke. I think it's taken away the one thing Rip City had solid, unwavering pride in. This will not help improve a single thing on the court, and it will flood Our House with Corporate propaganda and agendas. Sure, every team is doing it... conformity is what this society preaches. why be different, why have pride!? It's just a name after all.

Moda Center at the Rose Quarter. But I imagine it's only going to be seen in a few places, if officially seen anywhere. Moda Center and Moda Health Logos will be seen everywhere. I was able to deal with Wells Fargo and Kia being littered EVERYWHERE in the Rose Garden... but that's just us, it was still the Rose Garden, not Wells Fargo Arena, or KIA Center.

This is not an easy change to absorb. At least it's a local company and health related. All I can say is it could have been much worse. Imagine Walmart arena or the Sanyo Center...guess that's my approach. If they dump the pinwheel I'll have some serious problems though.

I agree Moda Health center is an okay name,Im just glad we didn't get stuck with the WalMart center or the Goodwill center...

You aren't a huge fan of much of anything Blazer or Portland, and clearly incredulous of the relation to Portland and roses, so nothing surprising with this post.

For the edification of those who are fans of the Blazers and Portland's History - Portland has been known as the City of Roses since 1888 and was officially adopted as the nickname of Portland in 2003. Twenty miles of streets were planted with thousands of Roses in preparation for the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in 1905. Two year later in 1907, the 1st annual Portland Rose Festival took place as was the Rose City Park neighborhood established.  Perhaps you've wondered why Navy ships dock in the Portland ports in June and why the streets are shut down for a silly Rose Parade.  The International Test Garden, established in 1917 in an attempt to protect the European species during WWI, is currently one of the oldest public rose test gardens in the United States covering 4.5 acres with over 8000 rose plants and 500 different species.

Other Portland sports affiliation to Roses: 2 professional men's hockey teams and one Negro league baseball team (The Portland Roses).  The Rose Buds (1914-1918) were the first American team to participate in the Stanley Cup Finals (1915-1916 season).  The Rose City Rollers are an all-female roller derby league established in 2003, and support a jr. league names the Rose Buds.  Two professional womens football teams incorportated Rose into their name; Rose City Wildcats.

Until the Blazer front office sold out, The Rose Garden arena was only one of a handful of NBA facilities that had not sold their naming rights.  I wonder if people that think it's not a big deal, or find this to be a savy business move, would also be ok with renaming the 1st Infantry Division, painting a coorporate logo on the American or State Flag, or perhaps selling out any number of historically and meaningful tributes to our country and city's heritage for coorporate product placement.

Portland IS just that much cooler because of OUR Blazers! :)

Bottom line, Allen is from Seattle, McGowan is from LA.  I don't expect them to empathize entirely with the meaning the Rose Garden holds to Native Portlanders (and surrounding areas) any more than some foreigner that doesn't bat an eye when an American flag touches the ground, or worse, is burned.  Although Allen should know better.  When the Jail Blazers brought discrace to the city, Blazer fans responded in kind.  It was a huge wake up call, and he should have learned his lesson.

If people want to say that symbols of national pride are different, then chalk it up to bias and an inability to relate or empathize.  I'm not going to demonize people who don't care, but I will absolutely call them out for being ignorant if not entirely insensative.

I've been here since the early 70's and I knew a bit about the rose gardens and history, also that Portland has more parks than any city in the US. That was a great bit of insight though BF...as usual well put with the history. The sports venue to me was much better named as the Rose Garden and it fit. I don't define the change in the same light though. It's the same court in the same spot it's been in for ten years but the logo and name have been sold. McGowan did exactly what Paul Allen hired him to do. I also don't care where Paul Allen or McGowan or Olshey are from, they're here. They're Blazers. I was a fan even through the Jailblazer era, (I never liked that name), but i heard some folks at work talking about the last 10 years of bad luck with injuries and thinking the change was maybe a good thing to bring in the Damian Lillard era. Fresh start. It's one way to look at it. I don't personally like the new name and I LOVED the old one. I'll adjust.

Sweet lord. The last thing I want is the mayor butting heads with Paul Allen. That's the beginning of a team picking up and moving.

You can't have it both ways. You can't give up money for sentimental purposes and expect to play with the big boys. If it comes down to the city Portland refusing to have a corporate-minded basketball team, the Blazers won't be in Portland anymore.

@ riverman ... because it is a head scratcher to say the least. Although my favorite quote from the Mayor was "Good luck getting that to stick." To the McGowens of the world who's job it is to come here from another world (LA) and make changes for profit's sake, here's a news flash: no one would of had an issue renaming the arena The Moda Rose Garden.

@ anyone else with an opinion...

Even among those that are bothered by the name change, some are miguided on whether the issue could be resovled by calling it "Moda Garden". The operative word is ROSE people. So it doesn't surprise me that people that don't care are also uninformed on the names significance.

Clearly the out-of-state consulting firm chose "Center" because it's about as genaric as it gets and puts all the focus on "MODA". Which in itself is odd, because as one poster on Blazer's Edge pointed out, MODA doesn't mean "the way" as Moda... (whatever they are) would say it derives, it means "fashion" (in every language) which is a classless look when placed on the Rose Garden arena.

It's ok if people dont get it. I don't care if yall changed your names cause it has no meaning to me, but I wouldn't change my name for $4 million cause my name isn't for sale. Although no one on this board would care 2 flips about me changing my name on this forum, I know my mom would.  Even if I sold out, my mom and anyone who knew me would still call me by my real name.  They get it.  Do yall? Whether people can understand, let alone empathize, with the significance and history of the Rose Garden name is one thing, and another entirely whether it matters to them. My point is just that people should take the time to understand why it matters to others before deciding that it doesn't matter to them, and certainly spare those that do care the "belligerent step children" comments.

Like it or not, the name the Rose Garden matters to a lot of Portlanders, and certainly thousands of Blazer fans.

Here is a novel idea if you want to emphasize the Rose and its history to the city then why not plant some f'ing flowers at the damn arena.

We are talking about an 18 year old stadium that is privately owned. If the name was that significant to the city of Portland then they should have stepped up and made an offer to Vulcan. Or maybe they should have followed through on the plans to renovate the Rose Quarter, which would have the Rose Garden Arena more valuable and therefore lessened the need to sell the naming rights.

People will move on just like they did when Multnomah stadium became Civic stadium and then again when it became PGE park and again when it became Jeld-Wen field.

So long Rose Garden Arena you will be missed, welcome MODA Center please continue to be one of the best NBA arenas in the league and I will continue to go.

@blazer fanatic good history lesson. if you look in the " book of modern roses " look up the name of the rose " Portland Trailblazer and you will see that it was  renamed from the rose City of Portland or close to it these are the red roses that you still see to this day planted around Portland. My father who was the largest rose grower in the northwest at the time bought the patent for the rose and renamed it the Portland Trailblazer in the early 70's he coordinated it with Mr. Glickman and Stu Inman I believe, it was a few years ago and I was young so the details are a bit fuzzy.

@ cmeese you know not of what you speak. The rose is one the hardiest of all plants and are found virtually everywhere. In fact I bet if I hit you with a full grown rose bush you would NEVER again consider the name weak.

I guess as far as the name goes it could suck worse But I prefer the Rose Garden , Madison Square Garden we should just rename it,  Boston Garden rename that one too

The bottom line for me is about priorities...and with me where this team is involved, there is none bigger than the Portland Trailblazers staying IN Portland, though future success of said franchise is a close runner-up.  This is, after all, just a name.  That said, the way we as fans refer to our beloved venue can never be taken from us...nor sold to the highest bidder.  Thusly, for me, it still and always will be PGE Park and The Garden.

It's a non-sequitor to say that the re-naming of the ROSE Garden has anything to do with the team staying in Portland.

And, as I mention before, the operative word here is ROSE, not garden.  Perhaps think of Rose Garden as one word, not two.  It changes the entire point and symbolance of the name by simply refering to the arena as "Garden".  ; )

    Top 5 NBA Arenas

    By Joel Brigham

"To assemble this list, the top-rated arenas were broken down in terms of design quality, how much history the building boasts, the amenities offered, the quality of the product on the court, the enthusiasm and support of the fans, and a wild card, which could cover any extra pros or cons of the arena.

Each category was given a score out of ten, and those points were then added up. The results are listed here in terms of total points.

#5 – Moda Center, Portland Trail Blazers (39/60)

    Architecture/Design: 8
From the outside, the building formerly known as the Rose Garden looks different from any other building in the league, and it’s a look that definitely earns it checks in the “plus” column. Also, in the Moda Center the luxury suites are higher up than in many NBA buildings, which means more fans in actual seats are closer to the action. That may have something to do with how loud this building can be when things are popping for Portland. Well, that and the “acoustical cloud,” a set of rotating acoustic panels dangling from the roof to amplify crowd noise.

    History: 4
Originally called the “Rose Garden” after Portland’s nickname (The Rose City), this building opened in 1995 and has never hosted an NBA Finals. In 1999 and 2000, it did host the Western Conference Finals, but that’s about as historic as this building gets.

    Amenities: 7
There are a number of exceptional restaurants at the Moda Center, including a sports bar, barbecue grille and many more. Plus, it’s easily accessible via public transportation, which the locals appreciate since the building isn’t located downtown.

    Team: 6
Things were a little rough for a while there, and it’s been a few years since the team made the postseason, but with LaMarcus Aldridge and reigning Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard leading the charge this year, it should be a more entertaining product than it’s been since Brandon Roy left town.

    Fans: 10
Portland only has one professional team among the four major sports, which means fans are very, very devoted to their beloved Blazers. It shows at games, which consistently sell out, as Blazers fans are among the loudest in the league.

    Wild Card: 4
Easily one of the coolest-looking arenas from the exterior, the building formerly known as the Rose Garden loses points for finally submitting to the trend of allowing corporate sponsors to rename a building."

Of the top 5 arena's ranked (Madison Sqare Garden NY, Staples Center LA, United Center CHI, Banker's Life Fieldhouse IND, and the Rose Garden), only Portland and Chicago recieved 10s for the category of fans.  The ROSE GARDEN would have been ranked 3rd were it not for the calamity that is a corporate name change.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
