It looks like Neil is sticking to his promise of going out and searching for talent in free agency. I have heard several rumors to go along with an already decent first acquisition in trading for PF (/SF ?) Thomas Robinson (5th Pick last year). Now it's still early, so we'll see if any of the attempts to sign any free agents holds true and that we can actually acquire some more talent.

The roster right now looks like

    PG- Dame, CJ McCullom
SG- Wessy, Will the Thrill, Allen Crabbe
    SF- Batum, Claver
    PF- LA, Thomas Robinson, Freeland
    C- Meyers, Jeff Withey

Making 12 players currently on the roster.

We could use a low end backup SF (possibly just resign Pavlovic), and could also definitely use another scoring threat off of the bench. Most importantly though, if we intend to improve this year, we are definitely going to need veteran Center.

Free agent BIGs on our radar:
    Chris Kaman

    Nikola Pekovic (RFA)
    Tiago Splitter (RFA)
    Zaza Pachulia
    Jermaine O'Neal

I think the best of the above for our situation would be Zaza. But if his price is too high, than I would go for Jermaine. With Jermaine, I would also try to acquire a solid scoring threat off of the bench (such as Monta Ellis) with the remaining cap room.

However, I think the best fit for us in our current situation would be Marcin Gortat. He has been linked to trade talk to go to the Spurs, and I say we sweep in and possibly try a sign and trade with JJ for Gortat.

What's everybody else's thoughts? What Center do you see us going for? Are we "moving the needle?"

I wouldn't sign Monta for scoring off the bench because he is sort of a ball hog. Yes he would provide scoring off the bench but his hogging would cause the team to suffer while he is on. He also is a very poor defender and rarely even makes an attempt to play on the defensive end. If we want scoring off the bench I would sign Randy Foye or Tony Allen both which are quality offensive and defensive players.

I do agree with ZaZa or Jermaine. Also agree with CT about Robin Lopez. I don't like the idea of grabbing Monte Ellis though. I don't think it is a priority but if we do get another scoring option off the bench, he'll probably be taller and maybe more of a 3. McCollum, Crabbe and Barton are young but I'm sure will be able to get BUCKETS off the bench.

    but

OMER ASIK SHOULD BE THE NUMBER 1 PRIORITY FOR OLSHEY RIGHT NOW !

Portland was looking at Barnes, WHO I HATE, but I think his skill set would be a good fit. Chase Bundinger/Martell Webster other players who would be good.

Yes, Omer Asik should be our first priority. And CT, I don't know why you and many other people and so high on Robin Lopez. He really is very bad. Per 36 rebounding, 8. We need a good rebounded. He isn't even a good defender. He blocks OKAY. He takes too many jumpers which he isn't good at and doesn't have an offensive game.

Monta is looking for a max contract that he wont find in the Rose City. Few teams i imagine want to add an undersized sg for max money. Personally, i think Tony Allen should be a priority. He and Olshey are cool so that helps.

Robin plays on a bad team Rip. You and i both would be taking jumpers at a high rate if we played for the Pelicans. Dude had six blocks and played Indianas Hibbert strong.

It is simple if Asik is available get him then add Matt Barnes and figure out whether McCollum can be our back up PG or if we need one. I would consider working for a deal for G. Vasquez.

It IS simple:  NO Matt Barnes.

@ commontongue, right u r.  What's "plan b" u say?  1st, in this case, plan b is called plan b because the "b" stands for better ;)  2nd, this is plan b (1 of 2):  we'll get Zaza or BRO-pez because this allows Meyers to grow & easily make the transition to starting center w/o paying out copious amounts of $ to do it AND this helps us avoid tying our hands w/ other deals/players (i.e. being able to KEEP Wes).

plan b (2 of 2):  trade Wes for Gortat (TRUST me, he IS available regardless of what PHX says ;)  I don't like this plan b as much as the 1st bc we lose Wes this way :(  I WANT to c Toney Allen PLUS Wes play for us! :)

ps for those that haven't read this, it helps settle some my fears of losing Wes for Asik.  The ONLY reason why I would now oppose getting Asik is bc IDK how Meyers transition to starting center will work; IF the 2 can coexist happily on OUR squad, we go VERY deep into the playoffs ;)

Right now we are doing good.

We added depth to the roster, back and front court. But all young players, so i think the rest of the signings must be experienced players! We have space to get a backup PG and SF, and a Starting Center.

We still need a Starting Center, and i guess we wont sign anyone else until we get "the center". Either it is a trade/FA signing, it will be Olshey main and only concern for the next days/weeks...

Our main interest right now seem to be: Asik, Pachulia, Kaman and now maybe Robin Lopez...

I think the first two seem good options, specilly Asik. Pachulia would be cheaper, as would R. Lopez. And honestly i dont see us getting much better then these guys...

Note1; Seems that Maynor as a thing with good point guards, he was a backup for Deron Williams, Westbrook, Lillard and now will backup Wall.

Note2: Seem JJ Hickson isnt gathering as much interest from teams as we tought he would...

If we don't get Asik, then theres a huge dropoff of what we could do this season. Adding Omer Asik would give us a guarantee slot for the playoffs. I believe we could even win our first series in a LONG time. Only if there is not injuries to major players.

If we don't get ASIK expect some low seed season or maybe not even IN the playoffs. But I think McCollum and Lillard will get us to a low seed regardless of our center

Monta Ellis is a bum, yeah he scores but also asking too much money. JJ Reddick is gone same with webster. I do like the Thomas Robinson trade, but Portland needs to be talking bigs. anyone but ZAZA would be good.

I like the looks of Asik and Aaron Brooks as a potential scorer off the bench.

@ Scott Chirgwin, I wouldn't knock Zaza until you've seen what he can do/can't for us.  I'm not going to b surprised by what he brings/doesn't; I know what to expect from him & I believe he IS EXACTLY what we need.  Let's not forget that we can't have it all & for the $ & resources avail., we can only do so much; for the $, Zaza's the best bang for the buck; in order to get a MUCH better center (which they ARE avail.), you'll have to give MUCH more to get them & @ that point it ends up tying ur hands for the future/marginal improvements all the way to an expensive wash :(  We WANT to KEEP Wes AND add Toney Allen + O'Neil PLUS maybe a backup pg; w/ all this, $/resources start to get thing fast when u want an All World center.  Bottom line is, we DON'T need a crazy good center, just a decent 1; we don't want a center that's so good that Meyers never sees the floor.

Here's my opinion on the guys you all mentioned:

Chris Kaman, I would say no, but that's just me. Dude would have a hard time even getting up and down the floor, let alone being a defensive presence.

Omer Asik, I like him, I think he'd be a great fit. My only problem is, Houston is gonna hold on to Asik until the last moment when/if they know that Dwight wants to go there, if they even do trade him. That means waiting possibly until the 10th (when Dwight said he'll pick his team), when many free agents are already taken, to even try and trade for him.

Zaza Pachulia would be nice, but looking at the free agency being so thin in terms of quality Centers, I think his price might be too high, and possibly too long-term, for what his production has been at this point in his career.

Tiago Splitter and Nikola Pekovic look like they're going to be matched by their respective team, and I'm sure it would be nice to make Minn. overpay like they did to us last year, but we need our money to be used.

Apparently there have been rumors we are trying to go after Dalembert? Idk how I feel about that.

Of the free agents, I like Jermaine O'Neal. I don't think it's a big splash, but we look like we are going to be using a Center by committee. We'd also have more money to use for more bench depth.

My ultimate request would be to trade for Gortat. Our team would immediately be playoff ready. Not much of a drop off in terms of offense and rebounding compared to JJ, but a great defensive Center as well.

All these guys are jokers! Point is there is no quick fix at Center. I've been saying it all along. Just get O'Neal for cheap to finish his career with us. He can teach Meyers and Withey how to play with their backs to the basket, and get another FA that is a defensive specialist (SF or PF preferably.) We already have 4 SG's so I don't see how T.Allen fits. Unless we give up on Wes (I hope we don't.)

as much as i would like to see tony allen on the blazers it wouldn't fit as mccollum would not only play backup pg but also allow dame to play off the ball. the only sense it would make to bring in tony allen would be to make wes expendable. i'd be ok with that tho. we know what we get with wes and tony allen brings a huge defensive presence. im salivating at the thought of asik or pekovic but at this point it doesn't seem plausible. i love the idea of jermaine o'neal playing any minutes as a blazer but that doesn't seem likely unless olshey can't get a deal done for gortat. as exciting as this offseason is i can't wait to see what we have in the rooks and if leonard has improved from last year.

Knorton, you don't post often, but when you do, it's always top notch stuff, keep it up. And Wscott, I like Jermaine, but who would start? We would have to split the minutes between the three. If Whithey impresses in Summer League, great. Only Problem is how might Lamarcus react to it.

I'm just kinda confused why we're not thinking about going for someone just even a little better with our 9 mil. Unless Neil is waiting for the 2014 Free Agency but I doubt that. I mean we could still always take the Oden risk if he were to be interested and we'd limit his, Leonard's, and Withey's minutes and create the beast I have named Greg LeWithey.

RC: If we're not going to keep JJ then I would start Meyers; but he might not be ready so Jermaine til he is ready. What people aren't considering when they talk so big on Asik and Pekovic is that neither of those guys had a legitimate PF playing alongside them last year, so of course they put up big numbers. With LMA, or KLove or DHoward they wouldn't put up those #s.

This is just my thoughts guys, and let me know what you think,

    Just throwing this out there, but what about;

    1.   Bringing back the Thrilla, Joel Pryzbilla (we can get him on the real cheap, and we know he wants to be a Blazer and finish his career here). I don't know about y'all, but who better to show these young guns the importance of setting killer screens, protecting the rim, and having your teammates back by being an enforcer than the Vanilla Gorilla?! (What makes it even better is the fact that we would want the younger guys getting the majority of minutes, so that would help keep Pryzbilla healthy, and with us for an entire season possibly...) the guy loves the Blazers and fans love him. More than showing these kids how to score, we need someone to show them rebounding, blocking, setting screens, and being an enforcer

    2.    We use the money we save on getting a veteran Center, on getting some cheap scoring for the bench, and there are a few options for that;

Kyle Korver     GP 74   PPG 11    RPG 4     APG 2

OJ Mayo          GP 82   PPG 15    RPG 3     APG 5

Corey Brewer  GP 82   PPG 12    RPG 3     APG 2

Matt Barnes    GP 80    PPG 10    RPG 5    APG 2

Chase Budinger GP 23  PPG 10    RPG 3    APG 1

Xavier Henry    GP 50   PPG 4     RPG 2    APG .5 (this was while only playing about 10mpg.... His fg% was .41 and 3pt% was .361)

Nick Young       GP 59   PPG 11   RPG 2    APG 1

Those are just some options for some scoring wings (which I think is where we need the scoring from in my opinion, that I think we can get at a reasonable price, and not lock us down with long contracts)

    As it stands right now, our second unit looks pretty good except for a couple spots;

         PG CJ McCollum

SG Will Barton/Allan Crabbe (Crabbe was a killer shooter at Cal)

SF Victor Claver??? (In 17mpg he put up 3.5ppg was .392fg%, .287 3pt%, and shot 46% from the stripe!) we need help here I think....

PF Thomas Robinson (in just under 14mpg he averaged almost 2 offensive RPG, and 5 points, with more time, and a defined role he could double his numbers (10ppg, 9rpg, 2apg) I think) good pickup.

         C Jeff Withey (14ppg, 4bpg in college)

Crabbe can play the 3 but I still think the 3 is our weakest position after we acquire a center.  Maybe korver a second unit as a floor spacer for us? Robinson can't shoot our centers obviously can't shoot that far consistently Barton is a 15ft and in player. McCollum can shoot but if he's the only player then it will hard for him to get a shot if a perimeter defender was guarding him. Getting korver adds to our 3pt arsenal in Wes batum and korver I believe we're all top 10 3pt shooters last season. That would instantly fix that position and add room to work for McCollum. You might still have money left over as well. Just sign a couple roster fillers like another point guard. A 12th man just bring back smith for less money. He will come back cheap due to his house being here and not having to move. Maybe, shooting for the stars a bit. Learn a couple things from dame and McCollum.

Well we can't afford korver now he was just offered a 3 year $20 million contract. He hasn't agreed though. I want a floor spacer at the 3 like a Wes type player. Can shoot the 3 and play defense.

Dorrell Wright would be a very smart pick up; I would like to see him with the Blazers, I remember watching him in Oakland.  Batum or Lillard will still likely be our MPG leader on the team though.  Another thing that I keep thinking about could be a Justin Holliday call up from Idaho this year if need be.  I bet Holliday improved a whole lot in just one year.

Yeah seriously, does the Blazers front office get their ideas from this message board? Because apart from Dorrell Wright, everything we suggested, like two days later there is news saying blazers are interested or blazers could get him. Example, Sam Dalembert, Kaman, Robin Lopez.

I think its us who are actually moving the needle. We should all get free seasons tickets.

Paul Allen said how do we get better?  I see no activity in the draft with no draft picks.  The trade possibilities are limited because of the value of our bench players.  We have no cap space.  So I think the improvement of our b...

Going to game 2 in SA and looking to see if any one else is?  Trying to find where the best seats for BLAZER fans are?

First Game starts tonight. Houston is a tough first round opponent and they play exceptionally well at home. If we can steal a game or two at their place, I feel like we have extremely good chances.

P.S. Would anybody happen to have a...

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
