oh Cory, Cory, Cory. this was, in fact, a pretty good draft for the Blazers. i understand you would have done things differently, but you can't always get what you want.

CJ is a combo guard, who will back up Damian, as well as compliment him at times on the floor (similar to how we paired Ronnie, and then Eric, last season. we already know that's the plan. stats don't tell the whole story, so just two days after the draft, we can de-emphasize them for now and concentrate on the roles they will play. also, CJ is a similar-type player to Damian so when he comes in, we can run the same offense, rather than having to slow it down.

Crabbe is a nice pick up. he's not going to be asked to do a lot when he gets minutes, except score. truthfully, he's unlikely to get a huge amount of minutes so he needs to be ready when he comes in.

Withey is a shot blocking and defending machine. everyone who points out we need to protect the rim is very happy that we took Withey. the guy averaged 3.9 blocks a game in college. we got a steal when we selected him.

we probably don't even need to comment on Todorovic since was already know he was specifically taken with the intent to stash him in europe, which is fine since he has two years left on his contract with Montenegro. Jerrett is gone, so no comment needed.

as far as drafting Shabazz, i'm glad we did not. he's a very selfish player, a la Jamal Crawford the year he played for us. i saw him play live when ucla came to Stanford and trust me, this is true. he's a good player, but not what we need with our 10th pick.

i've been reading up on the draft grades. for the most part, the Blazers are getting A- to B+ ... that means the experts, as in, the real experts, say it was a pretty good draft.

Really we are going by draft grades now. Funny I remember seeing a bunch of B's and A's the year we draft Luke Babbitt and Elliot Williams and that turned out so wonderfully. I also remember seeing a bunch of C and D's for the Pacers when they selected Stephenson and George.

If McCollum can play PG effectively this draft improves but if we end up with 4 SG's it seems like a major wasted opportunity.

We did as well as we possibly could acquiring 1 heavy rotation player(CJ) who can score off the bench. A bench that was the most inept in the entire league a season ago.  Crabbe has a chance to get some minutes provided he can beat out Barton, and I think he can!  Stotts' offense is geared toward the 3, and both those guys can shoot the rock!  Whithey is a great pick who will make the bench stronger...we all know he can block shots at a high level.

Olshey said he didn't make any big moves in the draft because we didn't have the assets to make a deal.  Our roster looks way more well rounded with an impact combo guard, swingman and center depth.  Looks like we have the flexibility to swing a trade for Gortat or Asik.  I'd rather see us sign Pek, Jefferson, or Bynum so we can keep the depth we just built.  If we get any one of those 5 bigs we will be playoff bound!

Pek Is going to get a max contract, al is too expensive same with Bynum. Gortat is o longer on the table for trades. Suns want him to mentor Len. We don't have the correct assets to acquire Asik. Our two options are kaman for offense and o'neal for defense and mentor ship for Leonard and now withey. O'neal is cheaper and is what we want.i think Leonard will reach his potential by the all star season.

PHX says they want to keep Gortat so they don't seem desperate to move him.  They are in full tank mode, or should be at least, and have no need for Gortat with his expiring contract and Len on the roster.  He's available read between the lines, I think he could be had.  I think you might be right with Asik though. The Rockets are looking to dump salary so they can offer Howard a max deal, IE draft picks and stashed Euro's(we do have a couple of those).

Not convinced that Al and Bynum are out of our price range, especially if they want to go to a decent team. If either of them are looking for max $ I think they are in for a rude awakening. Looks like Howard is going to Dallas or Houston, and that leaves Atlanta and the D12 loser as competition for us to sign a big.  If Houston gets D12 they move Asik. If Dallas gets him Houston already has Asik and won't sign another C.  The NBA has changed with the new CBA, so there are way less long term deals being thrown around. I think this new landscape helps us get Al or Bynum even for just a year or 2 .

As for Kaman I wanted him last year and he's a decent fall back option to the other bigs.  O'Neal is a roster filler at this point in his career. We'd be better off giving Leonard and Withey heavy minutes than an over the hill O'neal.  Olshey is going to aim way higher than Kaman or O'neal....whether it works is another story.

  1. Posted 06/29/2013 2:17 PM

It would make more sense for Phoenix to keep O'Neal rather than Gortat. He'd be cheaper for a team that is in full on rebuild mode, and he was more experience and would be a much better mentor for Alex Len. Sign and trade JJ Hickson to Phoenix for Marcin Gortat. There would be another player or two to balance the trade, maybe Allen Crabbe, Will Barton or Elliot Williams. Phoenix would get a talented and young power forward, and we would get our starting center. CJ McCollum was a great draft pick as he was far and away the best talent available, and he fit the need of having a lightning rod coming off the bench. The starting lineup of Lillard, Matthews, Batum, Aldrdge, and Gortat looks pretty good especially when you have CJ McCollum as the sixth man. We would still have some cap room to solidify our front court or sign a veteran point guard to play spotty minutes. Maybe Dejuan Blair and Luke Ridnour or something like that. This is what the roster could look like.

PG: Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, Luke Ridnour

SG: Wesley Matthews, Elliot Williams/Will Barton/Allen Crabbe

    SF: Nicolas Batum, Victor Claver

PF: Lamarcus Aldrdge, Dejuan Blair, Joel Freeland

C: Marcin Gortat, Meyers Leonard, Jeff Withey

    Thoughts?

That lineup is in the playoffs no doubt!  I'm not sure a Hickson and Barton/Crabbe/Elliot deal would get the job done, but we do have 2 Euro's to throw in too.  I'd be real happy if we rolled into the 2013/2014 season with that squad!

It might just be me but if Barton plays like he did in April I don't see McCollum being our 6th man. Barton put up big numbers for a bench player in the final weeks as did Leonard. Our bench can be really good if McCollum can run the floor for 15 minutes. I think if Scott's wants his faster line up he should go lillard Barton batum Aldridge Leonard. I think McCollum and mathews will thrive with each other.

Konner Eliot is no longer a part of this organization, a third point guard would just be too much our weakest position if we got decent center would be small forward with batum crabbe and claver. Maybe you can convince ak47 to take like $6.5 million and back batum. Position would be 4 deep but claver is a stretch 4 and crabbe can play both 2 and the 3 so minutes can be distributed if the players can do anything to help our team. I just wish freeland would make the improvements to be a legit back up pf. Ak Minnesota because he wants to contend. If we get a center maybe Neil can convince a good small forward to come here. That would make our roster 9 players deep with withey freeland and claver rounding out the roster.

The only way it works is if Barton plays sg. He's to light in the pants to play sf. He is however big enough to be disruptive defensively at sg. Batum,Claver and Crabbe at sf. At pg, it has to be Lillard and McCollum. CJ is in my opinion to small to play sg against 80% of the 29 teams we'll face. Against small backcourts like Milwaukee,Memphis,NY,Detroit,Dallas, and maybe a few others,we'll be formidable. Providing that those backcourts remain the same in this off-season.

My biggest concern is L.A.. If he doesnt want to be here, accomodate his request. Mareese Speights opted out in Cleveland. Cleveland inquired about L.A.. Shop him. Give them L.A., and they can give us  Speights & CJ Miles. We need all the CJ's we can get.

That would be horrible. That would get us 3 point guards and one hell of a downgrade at pf. Basically we get nothing out of that deal and kiss our playoffs goodbye. Free agency won't be that good for us. It's already a challenge to acquire a center we don't need the added burden of trying to get another starting pf as well.

We can kiss the playoffs goodbye anyway if L.A. doesnt want to be here. And CJ is a sg/sf. And L.A. is on of the best pf in the game. Anything we get for him would be a downgrade.

The only thing that Lamarcus has said is that if Neil Olshey isn't going to try to make the necessary moves to get this team to contend in the next year or two, he would rather they trade him then going through a long rebuilding process. He never said he doesn't want to be in Portland, he just wants a chance to win. And Siccolo, Phoenix is rebuilding, and obviously they don't have Marcin Gortat in their long term plans or they wouldn't have drafted a center with the No. 5 pick in Alex Len. If they did a sign and trade, they would get rid of a pretty hefty contract (Gortat), a postion they don't need, and get their starting power forward. So they'll be saving money and building for the future.

LaMarcus wants Olshey to build a contender. in no, way, shape or form has he ever asked to be traded. i don't know the true motivation behind chad Ford's speculations and I never believe a word Jason Quick says unless i read collaboration from two other sources. he's simply not credible.

I think we've taken steps in the right direction by adding some depth to our ailing bench. Now we need veteran help to get the best out of our young players. We have a very young team and no real veterans. Pavlovic is good, but we could get better. I think Andre Kirilenko opting out of his deal in Minny is a Godsend for us. We could offer him the multi-year contract he wants and he would be a great bench guy. He can defend almost anyone and is a good willing passer. Offering him 6-7million a year for 3 years would be fine by me. We could then try to move Freeland for a cheaper backup at PF and even waive Pavlovic in order to save a little money so we can sign Dalembert or Mozgov for the Center spot.

I don't know though, it was just an idea. What do you guys think? If we could move either Claver or Freeland for draft pick in 2014 or 2015 it may be worth it for a chance to sign Kirilenko and another solid Free agent veteran like Jermaine Oneal. Again, just an idea. Your thoughts?

hi Cailin. i think we will go after a guy like Jermaine or Gortat. Olshey may first swing for the fences by going after Pekovic or someone or the like. getting Pekovic would be amazing. he could compliment LaMarcus very well. I like the idea of bringing back Jermaine since he could play center, as well as back up LaMarcus at pf. if we were to just sign Jermaine, i don't believe it would take our entire salary cap. i think we might get a mjiddle-tier forward who could be ready to contribute right away. i've seen that a lot of people want to include Joel to make a trade meet league rules. i think that could be a mistake. Joel reminds me of another Joel, the Vanilla Gorilla. every team needs an enforcer and he could be ours. Olshey is an intelligent guy; i have confidence he's going to consider all options. i'm thankful to have a real gm who knows the goings on of the nba.

Gortat would be good but trading Hickson for him but leave Phoenix with 1 center who is coming off a stress fracture injury.

Chandler would be a great get but he is the Knicks only center after 60yr old Marcus Camby. We would have to give up Leonard, which I'm okay with. It would depend on the package.

We got 3 first rounders with one first round pick... This is what we call a good draft. Whether we have good rookies this season remains to be seen. And I understand the idea of focusing on guards in this draft considering everyone knows the NBA is a guard's league right now. 3 guard lineups are extremely common and I bet there's room for Dame, CJ, Wesley, Crabbe, and probably Will as well. If I couldn't get Alex Len in this draft, I wouldn't draft a center in the lottery. That's clearly the best player in the draft to me. But Withey? I'll take an experienced, healthy center that had 40 more blocks than Noel this season. That was a steal even more than Crabbe if you ask me. But speaking of Crabbe, if he's a more confident shooter than Luke and has a quicker release, we've effectively replaced our 3pt specialist and done so in the right position instead of the albino 3/4 tweener we had.

McCullom has the talent to be an NBA 6th man. He's like Austin Rivers without the ego and with WAY better percentages and decision making skills.

Withey will get playing time and might even surpass Meyers in minutes depending on the work that's put in this summer.

We never have to pay the Euro if he doesn't improve in the next year or two.

With Meyers and Withey needing playing time to improve. We can take a big shot at someone like Big Al, but even if we miss like we did with Hibbert, adding anyone from Dalembert to Cole Aldrich would still put us in a 3 (4 with LaMarcus) big-man rotation that will get the job done better than last year.

Cmeese were you being sarcastic? I didn't really understand you.

And this is why I think Noel will be a bench shotblocker for atleast the first 3 years of his career. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdIyXUhBEOI

He gets pushed around on defence, gives up post position, too weak and can't finish through contact, has no offensive game. There was one play where he got an offensive rebound, and just threw the ball up and in. Luck.

What I really did like though, was that he got deflections, and poked the ball away and got steals.

Also, because he doesn't have any go to moves, he tries to kick the ball our or give pocket passes and turns the ball over a lot.

@ commontongue, I disagree.  IF we wanted to become an instant championship squad THIS season... then yes (AND STILL the caliber of those players doesn't guarantee THE crown ;).  IF we want a team that will b strong & b in the playoffs for years to come & eventually win a championship(s?)... I don't think we "need" to b into luxury tax; the only bad part is that Wes will most likely b moved to accomplish this :(

Kassandra you're an educated girl, very well educated considering you're attending Stanford, so it was only inevitable that we would agree eventually. I maybe very opinionated, but I generally have sound reasoning behind my arguments even if they can be a presumptuous, or premature at times. Just keep challenging me on stuff you disagree with and this forum will continue to improve as we cheer, critique and even sometimes curse what happens in Blazer Nation; just remember we are all rooting for the same team.

I am a fan of Getting Defensive Players This Summer.

Paul Allen said how do we get better?  I see no activity in the draft with no draft picks.  The trade possibilities are limited because of the value of our bench players.  We have no cap space.  So I think the improvement of our b...

First Game starts tonight. Houston is a tough first round opponent and they play exceptionally well at home. If we can steal a game or two at their place, I feel like we have extremely good chances.

P.S. Would anybody happen to have a...

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
