When Orlando traded Dwight Howard people thought they were out of their mind for that package. Right now it looks like they got the best deal, with Denver a close second.

First they found a nice cheap replacement for Howard in Vucevic, in addition they added the solid Harkless and managed to find nice value in Nicholson later in the draft. That is three solid pieces for the future and they still have draft picks coming.

Next they traded Redick for Tobias Harris, Udrih sucks and Lamb the jury is still out on but Harris came in and looked like a major upgrade over Redick. Now the Magic have 4 solid young pieces.

Fast forward to the end of the season and the Magic have the best odds to win the draft lottery this year. Add in Nelrens Noel to that core. They now have 5 pieces.

Going into next year if I am the Magic it is time to trade Nelson, Afflalo and Harrington for more picks or young talent. By doing so the Magic should be bad enough to have a shot at Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins. Furthermore, they should have the cap room needed to sign 2 max players in 2015. Assume they spend some of that money next summer to sign Eric Bledsoe they still could add a bench player and a max guy in 2015.

    Imagine a roster of:

    PG Eric Bledsoe

    SG Andrew Wiggins

    SF Moe Harkless

    SF Tobias Harris

    PF Nelrens Noel

    PF Andrew Nicholson

    C Nikola Vucevic

With a cap at 60 million in 2015 taking into account the cap holds for Harris and Vucevic the Magic would have 24 million in cap room if they pay Bledsoe 8 million per. That is a scary core to be able to add a piece like Kevin Love, Lamarcus Aldridge, or Marc Gasol to. You are now looking at viable NBA contenders with an additional 3 first round drafts not discussed from the Howard trade.

Looking at that potential core and what the Nuggets got for Melo it certainly makes the idea of trading Batum and Aldridge more intriguing.

Orlando has put itself in a good position going forward but they didn't decide to trade DHoward, he demanded a trade and only a trade he would agree to. Fortunately for them, the pieces they got back panned out but Hedo's contract is toxic. They won't have all that cash if they have to buy him out.

Never heard of Vucevic before this season, now he is a double double machine. Harkless was a good pick-up... Tobias was a great find too.  I like the way Magic are doing things

If Blazers wanted to rebuild they can trade LA for Thompson, Waiters, 2013 draft pick

But I doubt Blazers start rebuilding

I am not sure what the Blazers plan is but it seems a lot easier to turn the Magic into contenders than the Blazers right now even if it will take a couple seasons.

The Magic were going nowhere with their old roster even with DHoward. They got a good young core to start to rebuild. I love Vucevic and I didn't know his name before his 29-29 game in the fall. I took notice. I don't think they are as far into becoming contenders than the Blazers though. That's why they get all the ping pong balls this draft and they are still stuck with Hedo

Hedo has one year left and a 6 million dollar buy out so while his contract sucks they can be done with it if they want.

They can turn to contenders quick if Andrew Wiggins or if the 2014 draft lives up to expectations.

70% of the eastern conference is going to be completely different next season so I don't think any playoff spots are a given until we know what they'll look like. It's a crapshoot. We're going to see new coaches and rosters in the east with the exception of Miami, Chicago, Knicks and Indiana.

Orlando had the worst record with 20-62, but because Vucevic doesn't suck, they got the best deal? Denver goes from 6th in the west to 3rd and they come in second? You're rating the deal on a plethora of assumptions about deals they may or may not be able to pull off in the future. I have no idea where this logic is coming from...

20-62 has a lot more to with being forced to play E. Moore and B Udrih at PG cause of injuries. The Magic got 3 good players out of the Dwight deal with Vucevic, Harkeless and Aflalo and still have 3 first round picks coming. That is a potential of 6 quality pieces for one. Add in getting Harris at the deadline and in 2 years this team will be back in the playoffs and be closer to a title than they were with Howard.

If Howard and Iggy leave Denver and LA then can there be any doubt who got the best of the trade?

If Howard and Iggy leave Denver and LA, and Orlando is still a bottom 3 team, it could be a bust of a deal all the way around. You make it sound like every attempt at rebuilding has been successful. Free Agents will still have to WANT to play in Orlando, and they're entire core will have to stay healthy. Both of those things can be crippling obstacles...

The verdict is still out on who got the best deal, LA, Denver and Chicago lost key players and made the playoffs. A 20 win season last year makes the Magic still a terrible team but one with potential to build a good team but you're right about them being a few years from having an impact in the east. Currently, they are not, we'll see what the draft brings them and the free agent market. I am really jealous of their center though and I like him a lot more than Howard. I think Orlando did absolutely the right thing in trading and blowing it up. I still put the Blazers ahead of the curve matched up with the Magic as far as playoffs.

Well clearly they are all at the same point right now, sitting at home watching the playoffs. But on the Magic, I think they'll go either Noel or Burke, but I wanted us to get Tobias last year when he was on the Bucks towards the end of the year he was racking up double doubles and was saving my fantasy team haha, they're looking good a few years down the line. But they need a point guard bad which is why I think Burke is an option for them.

By far Denver got the best deal, gave up one average guard, and got a top 10 small forward former all star out of it. Orlando did get Vucevic, who in my opinion is pretty overrated by the fact that he was the best player on the worst team in the league that's why he had the good stats, but I do really like Tobias Harris and Moe Harkless, they could be very good in this league.

Im not impressed with Orlando. Not one bit. Nor am i in awe of Vucevic or anyone else on their squad. And which team in the east do they replace in the playoffs ? Possibly and its a slim possibly that Boston doesnt make it. And if they dont,Toronto is an up and comer.

But when has tanking and getting many draft picks actually resulted in a Title?

Miami drafted Wade then eventually won a title when they picked Shaq / Bosh and LeBron

Dallas drafted Dirk but took more then a decade to actually win a ring with him

Lakers never used to draft barely , Spurs drafted Duncan, Parker and Ginobli but a big part of their titiles  are because of their system and coaching.

Boston drafted Pierce then eventually got Garnett and Allen via trade

Andrew Wiggins or who ever in the 2014 draft has to be as good as Duncan, Wade, James, Shaq, Kobe to actually win a champion ship. Which I highly doubt because these are HOFs

tanking also results in = the death of a franchise and those teams you said are not tanking they don't have enough talent to really compete theres a difference tanking is intentionally losing and is frowned upon and it also can result in diminishing your fan base

Basically Shabazz is a right handed dribble away from being a 20 point scorer in the NBA. He is probably good enough to do it now but would likely shoot around 40% to do so. Being able to go to his right would bring that number near 42-45%, which if combined with a decent three point percentage would give him a nice true shooting percentage. I also believe that Shabazz will be a more willing passer at the next level.
