I am not a huge proponent of tanking, although I do not mind if it can help the franchise. Which brings me to the Andrew Wiggins debate, he will without a doubt be the number 1 pick in the draft next year. He is an elite athlete, who can dominate in transition and in half court offensive sets. His ball handling is superb and his mid range jumper is amazing. His comparisons to Kobe and Lebron might be a little too presumptuous but he is certainly going to near same level as Tracy McGrady was in his prime if not better. That means Wiggins is a franchise changer.

He will need to add size to his frame but that should come naturally once he hits college and the NBA. His motor is also a bit inconsistent right now but I expect that has more to do with the game being so easy for him than anything else. Lastly, he will need to work on his opposite hand dribbling, which is unrefined at the moment. With his height 6'8", reach 6'11"-7' and athletic ability he can very well become an elite defender at the next level.

The question is should Portland consider blowing up the team and sacrifice next season to try and get him?

I believe that players of his caliber do not come along very often and whatever team takes him will be immensely better within 2-3 years. Look what Lebron did for the Cavs. Furthermore, Portland already has a young stud point guard to pair with him and would be loaded with potential assets from dealing Matthews, Batum and Aldridge to become bad enough to get a real shot at picking him.

Also should Portland miss out on Wiggins, Jabari Parker and Marcus Smart will both be available. Additionally, Portland would have significant cap room to jump into what is a potentially historic 2014 NBA Off Season. I am not saying tank but I am saying depending on what we could get from Batum, Aldridge, and Matthews it could be worth considering.

What if he tears his ACL and never comes back the same? Dont think we can blow it all up now.

1% chance that Blazers reset their roster for a small chance of grabbing Wiggins and maybe singeing someone good.

So you could tank to get better, or just actually play better. Which one would you do?

I am not calling it tanking, I am calling it trading everyone but Lillard and rebuilding. I do get the point though.

Lillard and Aldridge is enough to avoid winning the lottery alone one of them has to go if you want any chance at Wiggins and since LA is much more replaceable he goes.

Cmeese, why do you want to trade Aldridge so badly? He is the heart and soul of this franchise.

Because this franchise has not done anything since we traded Rasheed Wallace. Lebron took a group of scrubs to the NBA finals by himself. LaMarcus with help cannot even get this team to the playoffs. Do you think ever someone would say I am sorry Duncan, Kobe or Lebron but we cannot contend this year. If LA is your franchise player you are never winning an NBA title. That is why he must be dealt, he is a good player and would be a great number 2 but he is not good enough to elevate a team into elite status.

Not everyone can be Lebron. I don't even know how Lebron can be Lebron. Also Cavs had some excellent players to help them get to the finals. Dick Bavetta, Joey Crawford, and don't forget David Stern. In 08-09 season, the actually went 66-16. He couldn't do that for two years in Miami with Wade and Bosh? RIGGED.

No Lebron is actually good. I think the is the best player to every play the game. But he was also helped. MJ and Kobe were great. Shaq is one of my all-time favourites, but they were all helped. We never should have lost that conference final to the lakers, and Kings had beaten them fair and square.

Who then? MJ? Honestly, I do not like Jordan. Not one bit. Not Kobe either. Jordan was a great scorer and there was that one season that he average 30 something and 8 and 8. But Lebron is a more complete player. Most versatile player ever. I think the best ever but very possible that I'm biased. I wasn't alive when MJ played, but I have watched many of his game, especially playoff games, and I think most people will tell you that he got A LOT of calls. David Stern's golden boy.

stern changed massive rules after jordan came into the league before jordan came into the league the rules favored big man made it easier to make hakeem type players jordan was the cause to more then half the rules being changed so it was easier for stern to create jordan type perimeter super star players that alone is alot more then lebron has done in his entire career

Jordan did several things LeBron has yet to accomplish. Biggest was he won defensive player of the year and multiple championships. LeBron may end up better than MJ but until he dominates the league for several years and has a fist full of rings and gold medals, MJ has the edge. As far as a guy who also had more rings and had a huge impact on every aspect of his game I'd put Magic Johnson in the conversation. Magic also made his teammates much better and I think had tougher competition than Jordan or LeBron. Time will tell. Again, LeBron is hands down the best player in the world currently but this is a league without dominant defenders in the paint. Scottie Pippen could've defended LeBron  better than about anyone in the modern era. There are few dominant centers in todays game to stop a guy as powerful as James but back in the day it wouldn't have been as easy for him to score in the paint.

Just to add to my previous comment. MJ got his in the era of half court defense and LeBron gets his in the era of small ball. I actually was a Blazer fan during the MJ era and tend to think MJ hurt the league by making every franchise throw boatloads of money at a superstar instead of team ball, which I prefer. (ex: Pistons last championship team) not a superstar on that roster. I hope Portland builds a great team without an MJ or Kobe dominating the offense. I like a team that can have a different leading scorer from game to game.

Riverman, you made some great points. I would love to see Lebron or Kobe try to take it in the paint against Bill Laimbeer. I also love it when team mates just have that chemistry, and each ones strengths fill anothers weakness. That's why I like Denver so much. And even though Timmy is a superstar, that's kinda what has been going on in San Antonio for a while and that's great. Only Timmy and Tony Parker post big stats, everyone else just chips in a little here and there and they are such a great team. Also the reason why it's so important to get the right KIND of player for a team. Dwight Howard wouldn't be good for Portland because he's to big city and flash, and too much ego and the fans wouldn't like him. Lamarcus Aldridge is by far the best blazer and he's such a humble guy, the whole city loves him.

plus you would've never caught jordan calling up another superstar like karl malone or john stockton to see what team they were joining to try and get a ring

Elite players can change the face of a franchise and usually for somewhere like Portland the only way to get them is via the draft. Just look what Walton and Drexler did for us. Now imagine what Barkley, Jordan or Durant could have done. These franchise changers is the only reason I would ever entertain tanking and Andrew Wiggins seems like that guy.

True but Parker also looks like a future star. Then there is Julius Randle and Marcus Smart. Being bad next year by most accounts does not seem like a bad idea at all.

No better way to ruin chemistry, stunt talent and lose fans than to take a dive and gamble on something that may never pan out. We are trying to build a contender here, not buying lottery tickets hoping to win the big one with pure luck. We won the lottery with Greg Oden and well....in the end we lost. Why would anyone want to go through that again at the expense of the makings of a great team and I emphasize, team. Anyone who thinks tanking  next year is going to make Lillard, Leonard, and Barton better players is in complete, utter denial.

Would you guys consider trading our 10th pick and our 3 2nd round picks for the bobcats' 2014 first round pick? Having a 2014 lottery pick could guarantee an all star, as it is said that the 2014 has a deep draft pool. I really like mccollum and would want the blazers to draft him but maybe the bobcats want to rebuild faster and think getting another lottery pick will speed up their process. But having the roster they have right now and due to good talent not wanting to come to charlotte, i believe theyll still be around the 5th worst team next year. If they decided to do this, and say they had the 3rd or 4th worst record, we would still have a chance at the number one pick. And even if we didnt, we would still get a chance at jabbari parker, aaron gordon, marcus smart, etc. if we actually got charlotte to agree to a deal like this, i wouldnt even care if the blazers dont make the playoffs, having 2 2014 lottery picks would be great for our team. Giving up a lottery pick in this years weak draft class for possibly having 2 lottery picks in the 2014 class? I would want niel olshey to get some kind of deal like this done

SERIOUSLY? We can get into the playoffs next season, but people want to tank, to maybe get a possible star player, to maybe getting into the playoffs the season after that? COME ON. We already have star players, we need depth. A good bench. No one is trading our draft picks, for one guy.

Hoang that trade cannot happen because Charlotte owes a first round pick to Chicago so like us they cannot trade a future pick unless it is guaranteed to come two years after the owed pick is paid.
