So basically, I was thinking this over the big picture. The whole shabang. All in all, we have A LOT of decision in the near future, as well as decisions that may have already been made to which we haven't discussed. Most people, if not all, would agree we would need to improve this bench to be a solid playoff team. Some people, feel we need a legitimate Center (and some of those some, believe it is only temporary until Leonard can fill in and take over).

Wether it be through the draft, free agency, or trades, something will be done by the end of this next offseason. I think many, myself included, have flopped around ideas for trades, and free agents.. without piecing all three together, in combination with the roster we currently have or will have at the end of the season. Not only the roster combination, but the factor of player development with Stotts' overall coaching style.

Basically, I think we half-[butt] our talks about this team. Even if some of us are cap experts, or some are great player evaluators, or just understand the game. This thread is just to use anyone's knowledge and piece it together to see if there is any solid (probably very loose) plan we come around to. If leaving the planning to the GM sounds good to you, and this wastes your time, then now's a good opportunity to exit my thread lol.

Here's where I'll start with the current roster: We have 3 PGs, 2 SGs, 2 SG/SFs (CLaver & Pavlo), 1 SF, 2 PFs, 2 PF/Cs (Freeland & Hickson), 1 C. Elliot Williams makes a full roster, but obviously he cannot play.

First off: D-league. So anyone who believe's signing a D-League player, who do you cut? SO let's say you think Nolan is our worst player, do you think it's a good idea to bring in a PG as our bench improvement? Or if your thinking is we then bring in a SG or SF, than we keep the roster at 2 PGs? If your idea is to cut both Nolan & Babbit (BEFORE the deadline), than is this all you believe will help, who else would go? Or what else can "move the needle"?

Now let's say you are a believer in a trade.

    1) Trading a rookie. Here's my problem with this, if we wanted to trade a rookie(s), who is it going to be that is of significant enough value to build our bench. We have barely seen any rookie play? (Other than Dame... do I have to keep saying it?..) Meyers is a project and won't be worth a trade for 2 more years, although I would like it if that doesn't happen. Trading a rookie is best if you are getting a value back that is close to equal value to their possible POTENTIAL. And since we haven't seen enough of Barton, Claver, or Freeland. Making a trade with any of them would significantly under value them as a player. Unless people actually believe at this point in the season GMs are still willing to buy high for a draft pick of last year.

    2) Trading Hickson. His free agency this offseason seems like something he is looking forward to, and I'm sure many other teams are as well. So is JJ our C for the next 6 years? Is he a good fill in role until Leonard develops? Or is he going to backup Aldridge if he were to stay? With a cap hold of 7.6 mil, this is probably the focus of Olshey right now. And what could we get back if we trade Hickson? Is there a way we get a guy who plays like Hickson and also get some banch help?

In any aqcuisition, what position is our biggest bench need? Wether it be our current roster or our future roster? Let's say we trade Hickson for JJ redick (not that this is necessarily the most plausible trade), so now we have 5 SGs? Where do the rookies we brought in to develop fit into that scheme?

As for coaching, my thought is that Stotts wanted us to make the playoffs, bad. Key word: wanted. I think he's realizing with the recent injuries, the lack of bench. That maybe it's time to devote the rest of the season to the rookies development.

A lot to think about, but if you aren't willing to think about these things, than speculating for the team and it's future is mostly whimsical. I'm not asking for all of it at once, like I attempted doing. But any input on any of these things, keeping in mind the other aspects, is helpful.

You can develop players through practice and critical game situations. They don't have to play 30 minutes a night. You either have it and it gets better, or you don't have it. Trial by fire is not always the best strategy in the NBA.

So lets start with the last thing you said Knorton. We have a good coach that can lead us to the Playoffs in the next years, i think it is clear for everyone. He has a good starting 5, with 5 good players, but with some issues... Lillard is still a rookie, although he is playing very good, so he need also time to get experience a develop even more, Mathews is a very useful player, but he had some problems with minor injuries, Batum is developing to a top player, but is having trouble with is wrist i think, in the last weeks... Aldridge is an All-Star, that says it all about him, finaly Hickson is a good players, he rebounds he scores, but his defense isnt good enough, and you got to admit, for a center he´s undersized.

Now the critical part... our awesome bench! he have 4 rookies, Barton, Claver, Freeland and Leonard, they didnt have a big impact on the team´s game until now, i see a lot of potential in them, some more then other, but all worth keeping, altough i think Freeland is overpaid. Claver and Freeland already played in europe, and i think by the end of this season they will be good backup´s , Barton and Leonard will need more time, even D-League to play more time. with this  talked about 9 players, Elliot Williams is injured, so nothing to say about him, 5 left...

Ronnie Price can be a 3rd string, but he isnt good enough to backup Lillard, he could stay as rd options he practises with lillard in the summer i think...

Pavlovic and Jeffries, both are useful players, experienced, nice defender, not great scorers, if they were in a top team, they would be 3rd options, if not 4... so i think they could leave.

Nolan and Babbit, they showed some nice moves, some good games, but they just didnt develop the way we wanted, so i think it is time to give a chance to other players, the 5  rookies we have, are worth the try, so i would let them go.

About next Season, i would keep 8 or 9 Players.

    PG Lillard / 1/ Price?

    SG Mathews / 2 / Barton

    SF Batum / Claver / 3

    PF Aldridge / 4/ Freeland

    C 5 / Leonard

I sincerelly would love to keep Hickson, but if we want to fill our bench with quality players, we just can afford to 7.6m to keep him... that said i think we should try to get the best of him, meaning a trade most problably.         For next season, we should target 4/5players, with around 17mil. i wouldnt mind if the dont get any rookie next year... because this team really lacks is experienced bench players, we have enoguh young players already... with the cap we have to get this players, it´s doable... the 1 and 2 (and maybe 3)will be easier to get, the 4 will be harder, but there are some players we can try, the main issue, is the Center, it may be hard to get a good one, but i think we will get a good Center, for a good price. i will leave you my "dream"

1 - backup PG (Jarret Jack or Chauncy Billups)

2-  backup SG ( Gerald Henderson or Marco Belinelli)  would love to have Vince Carter here lol but that´s not realistic

? 3- backup SF (Alan Anderson or Matt Barnes)

4- backup PF/C (Mareese Speights or Andray Blatche)

5- Starting C  (Samuel Dalembert or Tiago Splitter) lol as the 2 position i would rather have Pekovic but he will be very hard to get

About right now, i would love to give 2 guys a chance.... Shelvin Mack and Hassan Whiteside, both playing now in the D - League...

I've mentioned it numerous times in the past but I'd take a serious look at upgrading the defensive coordinator position on the coaching staff. We have glaring holes at that position and championship teams have that guy on the bench...Rivers had Thibs for their championship. We need a defensive specialist on the coaching staff. We also need a serious rebounding defensive center. Vucevic (sp) in Orlando would be my first choice but Splitter, Damlebert or Collison would work. I don't mention Pek because I don't think we'll get him. I'd trust the scouts because I don't know enough about the D league talent. Jarret Jack, Patty Mills or Eric Maynor would be good. Both of the Greek guys we have the rights to are interesting prospects as well, I think it's Papanikalaou the SF, 6'8 230, Printezis 6'9 PF Papanikalaou is only 22, Printezis is 27 and known as a clutch shooter.

Riverman, the greeks may be good players, but we need to see that we already have 2 european guys, and they are still adapting...

and i talk with more info then you, because i´m here in europe and they arent really top players here... stats sometimes may not be accurate but i will presente theirs in euroleague, i dont think they would be a good addition to the team, since we need experience and they just dont have nba experience at all... we may give Papanikolau a chance, but maybe not yet...

^The Georgios stat line is shifted out of place one to the right.

But anyways, Nuno, this is kind of why I made this post. I ran a little impatient and didn't feel like rereading or retyping, and was in a rush due to a Valentine of mine lol.

But the point is, what you wrote in terms of free agent signings, I don't believe is realistic. Cap-wise, that would definitely put us over. While I agree those would be really nice additions. And if you do believe the D-League is a route to go, when, and how, do those players join our team? We have a full roster. Are you saying the offseason? And if so, is there a point in having 4 SGs on a roster if we also were to sign a free agent?

My other point to my initial post, was how a free agent would fit into Stotts' coaching system and team chemistry, and overall how do they fit.. like Matt Barners.. How does Matt Barnes fit into the team? Are we going to be taking away minutes from Batum? Because Matt Barnes is used to getting significant minutes off of the bench, due to Caron Butler being the starter who is average at best. Barnes also has style of play that is a little dirty, but that's just me. and Barnes wouldn't be a little change. Do we really want to throw that much money to one position, taking to account Batum's contract?

And so if we can't sign 5 big named or great backups to fill every position. Which positions are MOST necessary? This is why I personally believe there's a chance we keep Pavlovic, he is cheap and doesn't need to play a lot but fills a nice role. Claver is a solid backup to Batum offensively.

And do we really need 2 players who could potentially start somewhere, to be a backup to Aldridge AND sign a starting C? That seems like a waste if you ask me, which is part of the reason I might just stick with Hickson. Even if it is 7 mil a yr for 3 years. But then again, I'm a believer that Meyers is going to develop into the starter. But that's just my take.

Yeah but how many DNPCD have you already seen, 30 minutes isn't necessary, but since for the first half of the season we put off playing the rookies ANY minutes at all really. It's getting time to bump those minutes up if the focus is to develop them. And it will also be useful in seeing where there value is. Can Barton be a solid backup? Can Meyers take over at some point? Questions unanswered for too long just end up faded

You are right, what i said would be a best case scenario. not much probable but possible...

The way i see it, Hickson wont stay... and for next season to be better then this year, making it simple no names, just their position, we really will need 1 Starting Center(good defender that can also score),  + a substitute to Hickson(backup PF/C that scores and rebounds) + a Backup PG/SG(that would be our 6thman and scores off the bench) to both Lillard and Mathews. with just 3 players we would have a much stronger team, because we would have Center that would defend better, and couple players that would deliver scoring of the bench and let starters rest,  and we would be able to give minutes to all our younger players, Lillard is already a starter, and Claver, Freeland, Barton and Leonard would have space to play.... with 11 players. In my opinion a roster should have 13/14 players, in order to try some Dleague players, or free agents during the season. So we could add to those 11, 2 or 3 more players, new signings, and/or keep some experienced guys like Jeffries, Price or Pavlovic .

About the guys from DLeague, Shelvin Mack, Hassan Whiteside or Jerome Jordan, even others, i would give them a chance now, since we wont make a run for the playoffs, and if we want to take a few risks, now is the moment... like we did with hickson give him a chance with almost half the season to go... i really wouldnt mind to trade Hickson now for some assets, and waive Nolan, since he just isnt a reliable backup for lillard...

Well since Hickson contract will be to large to be as a back up 4/5 we should consider trading him, since his Veto power and bird right situation it will be difficult. But we shouldnt ask a lot for him for those reasons.

Maybe Hickson and a second rounder for Jeremy Lamb and Eric Maynor......or a similar deal to a championship contender...

    Next Season:

    Dlill/?/Price

    Wes/?/Barton

    Batum/Claver *

    Lamarcus/ Freeland/ Jeffries *

    ?/Leonard

Need to get another nice piece for our starting lineup (a center) : Splitter, Mozgov, Dalembert, Pekovic

We need another Hickson situation! When we find a D Leaguer or someone on the waivers that was a draft pick and hasnt worked out and have them break out here. : Shelvin Mack, Chris Douglas Roberts, Hassan Whiteside, Donald Sloan, Jerome Jordan,

A roster like this would be pretty good

    Damian/Shelvin Mack/Price

    Wes/CDR/Barton

    Batum/Claver

    Lamarcus/Freeland/Jeffries

    Pekovic/Leonard/Jeff Withey

that would be a nice roster, just 3 things... who is jeff whitney?

instead of 2 dleague´s for backup guards, i would sign an experienced one... like jarret jack, billups, nate robinson, reddick or other ...

and i would try to get a player like jj for backup pf/c instead of Jeffries, if possible

lol well i dont watch college ball but I have seen some highlights and read some analysis of him and sounds very good.. lol

Hes 7'0 SR in Kansas averaging 4 blocks....will be a mid to late first round pick in this years draft.... he was one of the best shot-blocking big men in college basketball.

"Withey basically emerged from obscurity last season, so everything he did was gravy. Now, the expectations are much higher. Withey's calling card is on the defensive end. Only Anthony Davis blocked more shots per 40 minutes last season. Offensively, Withey is still a work in progress, though he did show progress last season.

If he can continue to add strength and improve his low-post game, he has a chance to stick in the NBA. The league always needs backup centers, and Withey's defensive abilities should guarantee him a spot somewhere in the late first round."

Yeah I do agree going after some experienced guards but they will be expensive if we do decide to grab a great center. Jack would be perfect but is playing out of our price range right now. Nate Robinson might be a good option if he is willing to play with a small contract.

Freeland is the only rookie I would consider trading at this point.  His $3 mil is a bit steep for what he has contributed.  Olshey still has games yet to be played to make a final determination.

I am a huge HUGE Hickson fan and I would love to keep him somehow but if a trade were to happen the biggest issue is getting a defensive minded center and bench point guard. If the rest of the bench isn't good at least you have someone who can handle the ball and create opportunities for others, and frankly Nolan is just not good and Ronnie is just as bad. A perfect fit for this team would be Larry Sanders. Now, that is aiming high considering the defensive success he has had this year but he'd be great. I think taking a risk on a guy like Scott Machado would be beneficial or taking a guy like Shelvin Mack who is having great success in the D-league could be worth the risk.

Trade Babbit and Nolan for draft pick(s) *probably late first round

Sign either Machado or Mack (if Machado is not signed he might be)

Sign for an athletic wing, Terrance Williams and Damion James are examples or even CDR

If Hickson being traded is necessary shoot for a defensive center like Larry Sanders (just an example very unlikely)

If any of these players were to pan out then resign but if not I think key players to look out for in this free agency are: Trevor Ariza, Tyreke Evans, Timofey Mozgov, Tony Allen, Randy Foye, and Mareese Speights. All are not too expensive. Also I like the Nate Robinson idea, I think he and Dame are friends so that could be a possibility.

depending on the deal, gortat could be a good option...

but right now i dont see the management doing something, at least they could try some Dleague players, like most of other teams do, and even try to get Jordan Crawford, that isnt playing in Washington and wants to play, it wouldnt be hard to get for sure, still young, good shooter and very cheap...

lets face it, someting wrong is happening,,, we arent playing to reach the playoffs due to lack of bench, but our starting 5 is playing around 36/40 min each, and we are losing game after game... if we are going to continue losing, at least we could give some significant minutes to the other players, in order to understand who should stay for next season... most of them should go if you ask me... yesterday our bench was 2-15 of the bench...

@ this point in the season imo stotts is a less talented version of nate for the simple reason that stotts hasn't focused on player development just like nate didn't only difference is nate was a solid defensive oriented coach that pounded it into the teams head while stotts tends to act like it isn't even an aspect of coaching

As I've written previously, the biggest concern I have with Stott's system is that, by design, omits the center position...more to the point...the DEVELOPMENT of said position.  While I agree Leonard has a ways to go, I also feel he is better than what we've seen.  Stott's, whether aware of it or not, is misusing the kid the way Nate misused (or didn't use) Nic...spotting him up in the corners and taking away his strength...his athleticism.  Similarly, Leonard seems to be nothing more than a decoy a good portion of the time.  Run a play or two for the kid.

I agree with you Blaser, no lie.

I'm so confused as to why Freeland, Barton, Claver (more at the 2), even Nolan, haven't gotten their minutes. Not even just now that the season's almost over. But like, when they do get in they're not even losing leads, they are not the reason we lose. Yet every sees it as our biggest fault. Either way, I don't get the misuse of our rookies and young guys.

Because Stotts doesn't like bad players. This is not a kids league where you gotta let everyone play. Why play bad players and lose than to play good players and have a better chance of winning. If your a bad player Im never going to play you unless we are winning by 30. If we are losing by 30 I might but there only going to make things worse.

ooooops replace Bad Player with Nolan Smith

You can play Barton and Freeland they can get more mins i guess
