Trail Blazers (8-12) Vs. Raptors (4-17)

    What To Watch For

    Take Care Of The Ball

18 turnovers. That's how many times the Trail Blazers gave away the rock Saturday night. Those mistakes primarily came off of poor decisions in the passing game. Whether it was trying to force the ball into a small window or jumping into the air without a purpose. There is no way the Kings should have beat the Blazers. No way. Let alone by double digits. But Portland kept Sacramento in the game early on with those turnovers. Toronto is 4-17 and miles away from home. As long as the Blazers take care of the ball, they will be just fine in this one.

    Next Man Up

The status on both Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews is up in the air for Monday's game against Toronto. My guess is Matthews play but Batum sits. Either way, neither player is 100% and even if they do play, they won't be able to shoulder their normal load, which means someone off the bench needs to step in and produce. We've seen Luke Babbitt start to heat up over the past couple of games, Will Barton has shown flashes, and the same can be said for Joel Freeland, but who will it be against the Raptors? Lillard, Hickson, and Aldridge can't do it all by themselves. If Portland gets 25+ bench points, they will walk out of the RG as the victors.

Attack with JJ and LaMarcus as much as possible. Bargnani plays jump out da way defense until he can get traded to a better squad. Toronto is a young team. They're also a little banged up and road weary like we are. So don't expect a frantic fast paced game. Stick to the basics and let's send these young dinosaurs packing.

I really hope we play small ball tonight and move Damian to the 2 with Ronnie at pt. I also hope Sasha plays half a game tonight and gets it going.

I would like to see Sasha at the 3 and the Thrill at the 2 some, if Wesley can't go. Defending the paint will once again be key. The Blazers struggle mightily when allowing their opponents to shoot a better percentage from the field. Secondary to defending in the post I believe will be shot selection, followed closely by TOs, as D outlined in the opener to this thread. Let's not be THE team in the league known as the fellas you want to play to "get right" again. With losses already to a previously winless Washington team and a previously winless on the road Sac team, the label gun for "patsy" is already fired up and ready to go. This Raptor team dropped a game by 32 bones to a VERY shorthanded Jazz team. That makes a win tonight that much more paramount. Show some toughness and some guts tonight Portland! Go Blazers!

I'd like for once for our guards and wings to run opponents off the 3pt line and not have opposing role players have career nights from 3pt range. Seems to be a pattern. Sac made sure Babbit didn't get a 3 off in the second half of the last loss and he didn't score after halftime. I think Sasha is an underused asset we have on the bench but he needs minutes to get in a flow. He's much better than people think. Ronnie Price is also a much better perimeter defender than Damian is. Be interesting to see how the rotation plays out tonight.

Tonight vs Raptors marked the first time this season Batume and Wes DNP in the same game.

The Blazers did not make a single three pointer. (0-20)  Yes, this solid showing from our bench set an NBA record for most 3s attempted without a make.  Batum haters need to chew on a record of that enormity for a few weeks.

With 92 points, it was the lowest scoring win of the season for Portland, against the 2nd worst team in the NBA.  The Raptors starting PG (Lowery) and statring C (Bargnani) left the game before the half with injuries (their 2nd and 3rd leading scorers).

Thanks to another All-Star performance from Aldridge (30pts/12 reb/2 blk/2 stl), a solid game from JJ, limiting turnovers from the previous night from 18 down to 7, they pulled out a win.

Still think we need to trade Batum and LA?  Shhhh.

Our long distance shots looked like Scud missiles.
Hey, at least they hit the rim.

This game also marks the first time Babbit has ever pump faked beyond the arc and made it all the way to the rim.  It was a dunk, and it was shmexy.  Now that he knows he can dunk in a game, he needs to learn when to let go of the rim.

Defended the post, though Toronto is one of the few teams with less of a post game than Portland, and on both sides of the ball. JJ again going high percentage (7-7), LA on the block, Sasha and Nolan penetrating for floaters...much better shot selection. Play the percentages. The Blazers finally held their opponent to a lesser shooting percentage (40.4%-35.1%). My third key, TOs...Por 7, Tor 14. Nice win. Ugly, but nice nonetheless.

Really Stotts good job coaching like Nate last night. 39 mins for LA and 36 for Lillard in an 18 victory against a terrible team at home. I realize you got no confidence in the bench but sometimes you just need to stop over playing the starters.

I have never seen and nba team blow an 18 point lead... and certainly not with 5 min left in the game.

    (oh, yes I have)

I have never seen an nba team go 0-20 from 3 in an NBA game (that doesn't work)

... and win  (still doesn't work)

I have never seen Stotts play anyone who has come off the bench all year, play over 40 minutes.

(oh, sry sasha, I didn't see you there)

I have never seen Stotts play anyone who has come off the bench all year, more minutes than LaMarcus.

    (Really Sasha?)

It's a good think Stotts rode JJ and Lillard at least 60 minutes combined vs Toronto.

(59?  Are you kidding me?  Can I just round up this once?)

Excluding LA, JJ, Batum, and Matthews, the Blazers have never taken over 60 shots this season.

(well, ok, but batum and matthews were injured so...)

    ...and shot under 0.28 FG%.

    (ORLY?  0.277 FG%?  Wow.)

...and won without LAs 30 points 12 reb 2 stl 2 blks.

(Oh, that happended?  And we won!?!?  Whew, finally, something I can type!)

Stotts is EXACTLY like Nate McMillan and cmeesse47 is full of positive spin after every game.

    (sigh)

Portland did 2 things well last night they played solid defense and they did not turn the ball over. JJ and LA destroyed the Raptors pitiful front court. Yet all we did was beat a terrible team at home. Play like this against San Antonio and no matter what we do on defensive we will lose by 20.

Still a win is a win and that is a good thing.

Incredible game!!! I dont know what to say 2 of there best players out (3-pointers) missed 20 3s and had a terrible field goal percentage......and they won? If you didnt see the game or the score would you have expected a win? And from the Blazers,im just confused.
