Trail Blazers Assign Will Barton And Victor Claver

Barton and Claver, both rookies, will join the Stampede tomorrow, Dec. 7 in advance of the team’s contests against the Austin Toros tomorrow night and on Saturday, Dec. 8, in Boise.
    *UPDATE*

Trail Blazers Recall Will Barton And Victor Claver From Idaho Stampede
The Portland Trail Blazers have recalled guard Will Barton and forward Victor Claver from the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Idaho Stampede, it was announced today by General Manager Neil Olshey.
Barton averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.50 steals and 42.0 minutes in two games with Idaho. His 18 points Friday matched a team high, and a 21-point outing Saturday led the Stampede.
Claver posted averages of 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 1.00 steal and 33.5 minutes in the two contests.

This is probably a good move for Barton to learn the offense and Victor to get some playing time

Was going to post the same thing. Being assigned to the NBDL isn't a demotion by any means, it's just a way for him to refine his game while getting ample playing time.

I'm JW, not making any inferences. But I really don't know much about the D-League, how it works, what players have ever been sent down there.

Is it a bottomless pit? Have any previously placed players to come out and play an effecient game as a 6th man or starter? Does it shake their confidence, which is part of what makes Barton so great? Does it affect their contract at all?

The obvious is the more playing time, but it's obviously against a lesser talent. And time to learn the offense.. Anyone have some good knowledge about this or about any players who have been sent to the D-League in the past? Would be helpful, thanks.

It's a good system. A lot of players get sent there to keep them in game shape and when the Stampede became our minor league over the summer, we will train Stotts offensive schemes there as well. This will benefit Barton because he's not a quick study on playbooks according to Olshey and it'll give Claver some game time experience. Patty Mills went there, Babbit went there, and I think Nolan went there as well. The Spurs send guys back and forth really often. Some great players have come out of the D league as well

Barton gets caught often making a poor decision and getting trapped or turning the ball over.  Those mistakes can be fixed when the offense becomes more instinctive, and he is able to focus more and anticipate other variables.  I think he can definitely provide value off the bench.  But he's as much liability as a help at this point.

gerald wallace came from the d leagues and he was a pretty solid player not so much now that he's getting old but when he was in his prime he was a pretty good baller

Downside is, Portland will now be without arguably their most productive bench scorer v Sac, thusly even SHORTER-handed...as hard as that is to believe.

Ronnie Price and Meyers Leonard put up the biggest numbers off the bench..12 pts each. Sasha put up 7 in about 5 minutes, Freeland put up 8 in about 7min and Babbit got 9. I think Barton's top score was 7 in a game and it took him longer to get it.

The staff really trust Freeland, Myers, and Babbit to be productive when starters leave, maybe we see a change of starting lineup who knows

Barton has actually been pretty good off the bench. And he's had more than a couple 7-point games. He had 12 against Detroit and was a huge energy boost in that game. That said, he's good enough to start in Idaho, which means he'll get used to the offense and hopefully improve his decision-making without losing his confidence/mojo.

Sasha will probably get the spot in the rotation that Barton's been getting, and I'm perfectly all right with that. He's as good of a hustle guy, a better 3-pt shooter, and he's a veteran.

Claver needed some playing time and he'll get it in Idaho. He's got a lot of raw talent, and I bet he can be a decent role player in the league. Hopefully, he doesn't get frustrated with the NBA and pack his bags for Spain before he really gets a chance.

I forgot the Barton had 12 pts in Detroit. His problem so far has been his inclination to fall for the trap defense and seem lost on offensive schemes. I think that's what some time in Idaho will help him with. Stotts said Barton and Claver will play two games for the Stampede and be back to practice in Portland right away so they're not gone forever. Both those guys have a huge upside down the road for our bench. Now that the Stampede is our minor league is there still a limit to how many times you can send bench players there in a season? Used to be 3 I think but that was before they were a Blazer affiliate exclusively. I'd like to know.

Barton's a good player.. Can't wait to watch him improve. One of my favorite rookies and a great pickup so late in the draft. I think Claver just needs to get used to the pace of the game but other than that he has a great shot and plays good defense.

I watched some of the the d-league game online just to see how competitive it is and I've never seen one before so I had no knowledge, was an obvious step down in talent but you know who else looked good was Coby Karl. He can run the point well and plays good defense. I was impressed Barton had 3 blocks and one of them was a huge stuff on a big man in the paint.

Good to hear this is temporary Riverman reading the post in the Wesley discussion. I read the d-league FAQ and it states that a player can only be sent down three times within a year.

Barton has made some mistakes in some games but that is to come from a rookie. I would like to seem him in play for us rather than Idaho.

When we speak of free agents I have been saying pick up Chris Douglas Roberts for a while now. I was recently looking at the D League to see how Barton is doing and guess who is Number 1 on unsigned DLeague players-CDR himself!

Blazers really need to pick this cat up!! He is beasting over there. I know it is the DLeague but is he can put up

28 Points 5 Rebounds 4 Assists 2 Steals he should be worth looking at!!  His last game he dropped 27, 7, 8

The reason I liked him is because I remember when he put up decent numbers in New Jersey

If you look at his game log he was doing great in THE NBA in the couple months of the 2010 season. November And December he averaged    16 PTS 5 Reb and 17 and 3 reb

CDR is solid.  I have no idea who's else is available, in that I haven't looked.  Redd is a great scorer, but old.  CDR could be that guy that can maintain a lead, if not extend it, when Wes or Batum are on the bench.  I would be exstatic with him on the roster.

By the way, I actually read an article about the rule changes since the new CBA has kicked in for the D-league, and the new rule changes are:

"Previously, only first- and second-year players could be sent down without their consent, and no one could be assigned more than three times a season. This year, teams may also send third-year players to the D-League without their permission, and there is no limit on the number of times a player can be assigned. Veterans with more experience can be sent down, too, as long as they sign off on it. Teams may elect to send their longer-tenured players down for a rehab assignment, for example."

So we'll probably see the D-League used much more not only since it's the first year affiliate but also with these new rules

They were sent there to begin with with a 2 game plan, they were told to be back Sunday for practice before they left. In fairness to Olshey, they couldn't anticipate Wes and Nic getting hurt. It opened a window for Babbit or Freeland or Leonard to step it up a notch and none of them did. Blown opportunities for bench guys. The D league is there to prime the pump and get bench players in game shape. It was a good move for both of them. Last game Barton had 21 and Claver had 15 on offense and both had a bunch of boards. I'm really glad we got our own minor league to use this season. It's injury insurance at the least. Carl is playing well for the Stampede so far and Holliday as well. Spurs are masters at using the Toros for bench help over the last few years.

The Spurs and coach Pop have also been masterful at knowing when to rest starters, for the purpose of insuring health deep into the long 82 game season. Obviously, there can be little comparison made between the two clubs and their respective goals this season. However, risking the long term health of Portland's core, a collection of players projected to be here long term and considered building blocks, with nothing better than lottery to play for, is extremely short-sighted and foolhardy.

For me personally, this season is about the growth of our young core, not so much about wins and losses. I acknowledge, and have come to terms with this team being in a rebuild mode, and in fact have supported that decision long before it was popular to do so. That being the case, the health of said core is equally important, and for me at least, more so than the team's record. This organization has had it's share of misfortune relative to injury. Just not a proponent of purposely encouraging more of the same, unnecessarily, in the future.
