Yeah if it isnt B-Roy or Rudy then Andre Miller beacause Steve Blake has chemestry with B-Roy and to use that chemestry I would like to have B-Roy at PG insted of Steve Blake.

Andre mill er is flat out better than steve.  I like steve alot but not starting over miller.  Miller is goin to be dishing dimes to oden and lamarcus all year long.  I woulnt be suprised if he averages 9 assists a game.  No matter who wins the starting point guard job we are a far better team now with miller on this roster.

If Oden starts this year, Miller definately should start, too! Dre could be really good for Greg and is offensive stats if they get some chemistry going. Centers that lock down the middle, like Dwight Howard or the freakin' Bird Man, will be forced to stay with GO if they are faced with the constant threat of Greg cutting backdoor and throwing down the lob from Dre. That sounds sweet and I can't wait to see it happen.

Plus, I was just reading about B Roy's contract and it said he led the team with 5.1 assists per game last season. That's really good for a SG, but shouldn't our starting PG be getting at least that many, if not more. Miller is averaging 7.4 apg over his entire career! He's gonna average more than that in Portland, too, because of all the talent surrounding him, making him the obvious choice for starting PG.

Finally, let me just say that I do really like Blake. With his 3 point shooting, he may be the right guy to play when B Roy takes over late in close games. He will also be a reliable ball-handler for the second unit and a huge upgrade from Sergio. But because Andre is the best PG on the team, he will start. Maybe not on opening night, but probably not too long after that.

So is that to suggest that Miller is incapable of running an offense that is at a slower pace? Not so, Miller is a very good point gaurd, the type that no one should put in the box of being a certain type of pg.  Basically he can give any team what they need, he has had to run different types of offenses and I truly don't see how our possible starting lineup would cause problems for a pg as good as Miller........Bottom line Miller should be starting over Blake I don't understand would go out and say the things he said about the position when he hasn't gotten them both in training camp and practices and such.  Just guessing but I think he'll change his mind about who's starting come time for preseason.....

I wouldn't throw Bayless in as the starter just yet. He needs to be eased into the role and possibly spend some time at the backup two guard to improve his NBA level skills before taking over. Miller likely will start and give us a better defense at the position. Still not at the level we would want but better than what Blake brings to the table. I would like to have another solid option but since this is the group we have I would rank them as Miller/Blake/Bayless with Bayless slowly taking over from Blake. He should be the starter in 2 seasons IMO.

Dan,  I wish I could see the previous posts when adding a comment like the old site.

    Betty, you go girl!

Who starts says nothing about Blake or Miller as an individual player.  Basketball is a team sport.  Use your advantage, you have a half court offense, and a running team off the bench. That doesn't mean you can't mix it up too.  The only way Bayless see's significant minutes this season, is an injury. He should just bring a note pad to the bench.

Have we all ruled out any further trades or is all this on a as is premise. I think we will not know officially till atleast a few games in. Stats or chemistry are not a telling factor. Neither is previous style of play. I think realistically Miller has it we would not pay that much for back up PG although we were gonna pay that much for back up PF in Paul or Lee. I think they will work Miller in to relieve Roy ball handling duty. The only real knock on Roy game is settling for jumpers I think they can use a veteran PG to tweek Roy's game. I see him being alot more receptive to that from Miller that Blake. I like we have this debate because it means we have two PG worth starting next year gonna be so fun.

    Hey Dman, summer is cool.

It will never be about who starts with me. It's about what wins.  I like Andre with Rudy, Nic, Travis and Greg, that's  BOOM SHAKALAKA !
Roy plays at his speed,  we can trust him whenever he is on the floor.  Blake played the Robin role to 54 wins last season.  Best part is, you can mix it up.  :)

My question is, if Miller isn't a better defender than Blake, who stops the Aaron Brooks size pg's from the lay up drills to the rim ??? Having Oden and Pryz does no good if they're on the bench in foul trouble.

Hey Kim I think there's a weakness in every team that fans of those particular teams can point out and that one you pointed out could very well be one of them. I just hope that its not too bad of a problem which I don't forsee (but who am I right).

Also I can see Blake working as well with the second (fast-paced) unit just as well as he was very good with last years first unit so it should be fine either way, I for one just happen to think AM is the better pg and should be starting.....the same reason why I've always disliked (regardless of success) of the Spurs benching Ginobili in favor of Finley or whoever else in the past just to bring Manu in for the bench spark.....

Don't beat me up too much for that one my Blazer affiliates haha

My hope is that the entire team steps it up on defense and we see that " nasty" Brandon referred to in his interview at the end of last season.  It's going to be a great season, no matter who starts.

I hope we have Steve Blake start.  I think that it would work out better for the team that way.  Steve was our best 3pt shooter last season.  We need a good three shooter to help keep the defense spread away from Roy and Aldridge in the starting line up.  Dont get me wrong, Miller is one of the all-time best point guards to play the game, but I believe he could make more of an impact on the second unit.  I would like to see split minutes between Blake and Miller. Kind of like we did with Pryzbilla and Oden.  But the starters need a great 3 shooter, and bench needs a great passer and play maker.  Our second unit is full of good shooters, we just need somebody to get them the ball.  But either way this plays out, the Blazers will have the best back up PG in the league to go along with the Best back up Center.  This will be an extremely deep team now.  Our bench alone could compete with many starting line ups.  GO BLAZERS!!!!

We all know Miller can score more than Blake and can pass better than Blake. I'm just saying... at the beginning I just thought this was a no-brainer.. well Miller of course he's the one we are paying almost 8 million a year. But after analyzing.. I think he would be better coming off the bench. He is an up tempo player just like Rudy and Outlaw and he can throw some good lobs for them as well. Blake fits better with the starting 5 because of its experience and growth together and he is a reliable outside shooter so whenever G.O,LMA or B roy get double teamed they can make a pass for an open Blake and he'll get the job done. Still this is a VERY VERY VERY HARD decision. Whoever the staff picks as the starters I will understand. I just think because of the chemistry and the ability to shoot consistently from the 3pt line it will benefit the team if Blake starts.

So I'm assuming what B.Roy said about wanting to play off the ball more this season so some load can be taken off of him as far as ball handling and him wanting to run the break some will not be happening......It seems that the team will be playing similar to how they did last year, being that people are saying that Blake would be the better fit to start which is fine for me if we will be playing just like we did last year.....

Yea I guess my opinion is still based on the simplicity that most basketball teams throughout history on all levels usually have their team's best five start for those are the guys to set the tempo that is needed for that team to succeed. Otherwise coaches in the history of this game would not have worried about their all-star and future hall of famers coming off the bench because it doesn't matter right, obviously it does to some significant degree which is really the only reason I would say start Miller because he is the better player at that position that's all

That's a good point, I guess in my mind neither Blake or Miller are future hall of famers.  To me they are pretty equal talent wise, each is better at something the other isn't. Hopefully that makes the entire team better. We'll see.

I like Blake but his defense aint really all there... gives up a lot of easy baskets... Roy needs a little pressure off his shoulders... he was assist and point leader... I think the offense is gonna advance nicely.. Miller's gonna kill and help mold our team into a CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD!!!!

Andre Miller is the "proven" PG.  Enough said.  Yes, Blake has done very good things for us throughout these last couple of years and has developed into a sufficient PG producer...but all we have to do is look at the Playoffs against Houston.  Blake was the #1 reason why we lost a couple of those really close games.  He made mistakes when it mattered the most.  And Andre Miller is proven to not make those mistakes often, if ever.  He is a picture perfect NBA PG who will be able to distribute consistently.  Blake hasn't proven that he can distribute every single game.  However, even if Miller starts, Blake will get plenty of minutes coming off the bench.  And leading the second team is something that we haven't seen any PG do yet, Sergio couldn't do it, and we all know that Blake can.

Andre is a great penetrator, but a lousy 3 shooter. With him playing with Roy, you won't have anyone spreading the floor. We don't need both BRoy and Andre on the floor at the same time. This gives you two penetrators and only one three point threat. Blake is a better fit with Broy and Andre with Rudy.

I think the best move would be starting with Blake. We should still give Andre the majority of the playing time but he could help us more with the backups and second half play. Especially when Roy gets tired it will be nice to have a rested Andre next to him.

I agree that Miller's stats are nicer to look at, but you have to understand that a big factor in this is CHEMISTRY. Blake has had the reins in his hands a long time and I think for the start of the season, Blake needs to start. Miller should come off the bench and ease in to the starting role. After all, its Blake's position to rule. This point guard competition may bring out the best in both guards. But hey, Nate isn't an amazing coach for nothing. I'm sure he has a plan up his sleeve.

They can't really cheat off Miller on defense either, he will punish you too.  It's a win win situation either way.

But imo, it's still Blakes job to lose, with Blake and Martell  both knocking down  3's,  other teams are going to have to use the  6 man play if they want to double Roy and LA at the same time.

Miller for this year with Bayless's minutes growing now that Blake is gone.

Frankly when you have SGs that see the floor and handle the ball as well as Brandon and Rudy, you could play those two together as "guards" and let the Defense figure out who is the point.
