Outside shows versus driving the lane.

    Your Thoughts?

I think this is part of Damien's learning curve. That's where his turnovers have been. Passes in the post. The whole team is learning a new system and I think last 2 games LaMarcus has gone down there and rebounded well. JJ hangs in the post well. I think as the team watches film and practices together the chemistry will get there and the pick and roll and post up game will get a flow to it. Nolan has also thrown the ball away in the post. Turnovers make guards gunshy about threading the needle. It's a work in progress but hey, we're 2-1 now. A lot of teams are going through the same thing, new players, chemistry. We'll be fine. I agree with you though, when the 3 is not dropping Nic and Wes should be driving the lane and dunking the ball. Nic did that really well against the Lakers and Wesley is finishing much better than last season.

i like the aggressiveness on the offense but when the shots aren't falling i wanna see some penetration and for the offense to rotate for the kick out if there's no easy shot. that could creat havoc for plenty of defenses

I don't mind the outside shots, but I do want to see more of LaMarcus Aldridge in the paint. He's too tall, long and skilled to be shooting that many jumpers. Put him down low and run the offense through him. If the defense doubles, kick it out to Dame for the 3. He had 6 assists earlier this road trip so he's great at making the proper pass as long as cutters are sent down the middle. And if the defense decides to play him straight up, he'll take anyone in the league 1-on-1 in the low blocks.

Agree DHawes, LA back to being a post in the paint player. I like him from the midrange but he's so much more efficient in the paint & it helps out the perimeter guys.

what scares me is the numerous comments from LaMarcus and Stotts that sound like Aldridge sincerely believes he's better playing outside... it's simple arithmetic that shows his game is in the post, and sometimes at the shoulder. Not the other way around, and certainly not beyond the top of the key...

I think I'm not alone as a fan when I say we've seen plenty of the "rely on jumpshots" type of play from blazers rosters in years past, and I really hope that is not the type of offensive game planning that Terry is bringing to Portland, just trying to make Aldridge and the Blazers another Dirk and Mavericks.

It's been really exciting to see the development of Wesley and Nico this year, where they are finally getting rid of that "stand outside and wait" mentality from the McMillan/BRoy era, and learning to cut and pressure the D instead of faking it and passing to someone else outside. But, that will all be a moot point if our TRUE franchise player is taking his game the other direction.

LaMarcus, you lead this team. We need you to lead this team TO THE RIM, not to "18 out".

I liked what Batum s doing. Driving in and shooting 12 free throws. He should do that more.  The paint was held down by Deandre. Aldridge should go in the post more.

Agree completely Blazer 247. I think the concept Stotts like's to install is much similar to when he coached at Dallas. Mostly pick & roll fins are how he wants players to get in the paint, and having a play in the low post doesn't help that. BUT on plays when it is just aldridge posting up on the outside, why wouldn't you just post him lower? doesn't make much sense but I think he's just getting a feel for the players.

This team is young, sporatic, not like when he coached in Dallas with pretty easy to understand players who were much older. We have guys like Mathews who improves his game and keeps taking on a bigger & bigger roles, and we have guys like JJ and much of the others who still are trying to get a grasp on their game/role. It took Nate Mcmillan a while to figure out what style of consistent play we would work the best with. I have a feeling we will be seeing Lamarcus & everyone in several different play types in tonight's game.

OK, Last night was a great example of what happens when Portland attempts to play in the paint.  Albeit they were playing a team that was on the last game of a long road trip, it proves my point that when LA plays does there he gets the foul shots and also helps JJ on the boards.

Between Wes, LA, JJ and Damian and sometimes Batum, if they aggressively play in the paint and attack and also hit the boards we are competitive.

Maybe and I mean maybe this will be LA's time to play the Low Post like he did last night and return to all star form.

The paint saved us from the awful outside shooting last night.  Just imagine what our team would be like if we saw more of the paint and less of the outside jumpers.

To answer the question originally asked in the submitting of this thread...it's human nature. Do away with guaranteed contracts beyond two (or maybe three years in exceptional cases) and watch the competitiveness on display any given night in this league grow immeasurably. The NFL has it right. MLB and the NBA need to follow suit to survive this trying economy, particularly with no relief in sight.

Wow I never thought of it like that.  Use the NFL model and make players earn their keep.  Or do like the normal world, give a compensation program that is heavy performance bonus based.

Again if it comes down to the NBA Labor Union this will never happen.

A good option would be to do the following:

    1.  Start with their standard Rookie Contract

    2.  RFA would be limited to two years with an Owners option for a third.

    3.  Second round  RFA would be limited to two years with an Owners option for a third.

    3. Finally FA Contract would be limited to three years with Owners Options for a fourth.

So you have two RFA periods with owners having control, then finally after two RFA periods the players would FA.

This would make it interesting in the NBA where players to become FA's would really have to earn it.

Nice Idea but I think the TWolves trade is very lobsided in our favor

Hawes was playing nice this season and would be a good pick up imo ...

I love the Grit and Grind, and I love the Spurs timeless play. I think if the Spurs get to the finals, they will beat the heat, but they won''t beat the Grizzlies easily, and the Grizz can''t beat the Heat. I know it''s weird.
