Elliot Williams To Undergo Surgery On Torn Left Achilles Tendon
Williams, 23, sustained the injury during voluntary workouts at the team’s Practice Facility on Tuesday. A date for the surgery has not been set.
A timetable for Williams’ return will be determined following the surgery.

Terrible news, especially considering I felt like he was eventually going to become the starter this season. But even worse news considering Elliot just can't buy a break. First it was the preventive knee surgeries his rookie year which cost him all 82 games. Then, just as he was about to break out, he suffers a shoulder injury in practice, sidelining him for over six months, causing him to miss out on ample playing time down the stretch of the 2012 season as well as Summer League. And now this. I'm bummed for Elliot and for myself, E-Will was my favorite player and felt like he was on the cusp of being a household name. I guess, that's just going to have to be put on a hold for a little.

In terms of this season, our young bench to start out with just got even younger, especially in the backcourt. We will be starting a rookie point guard whose primary backup will be a second-year player. And on the wing, we have Wesley but his backup is most likely rookie Will Barton. Looks like we'll have to grow up in a hurry!

I agree DHawes this is a terrible loss for the Blazers because I too believe EWill would start by the end. This might be good for our young roster because it is very possible that spot opens up. How about a veteran shooting guard like Tracy McGrady to do some teaching? He still has some game left in him

Man i feel bad for E Will. His loss may be Will Bartons gain. I think this is destiny. Willy B. might have taken his job in training camp anyway. Now we shift. Sasha will outplay Claver and Babbitt. Wesley might play some sf. It actually makes this an easier rotation.

Leandro Barbosa remains unsigned, but is being actively pursued at time of this post, by among others, the Lakers and Suns. Barbosa a significant upgrade over Smith anchoring second unit.

Crappola! This is really bad news! I hope he heals well and comes back strong. I too thought he'd crack the starting lineup and LaMarcus said he's one of his favorite players on the team. Looks like Barton is going to get a shot now. Also probably a good thing we signed Pavlovich. Barbosa would be a great asset to pick up. Him and Nic would be like two deer running the floor. I wonder if after this 3rd setback they decide to cut Elliot?

As far as the lakers picking up Barbosa...where do they find the money? They've got to be tapped out and are already way over the cap...just don't get it. I'd pass on Tracy McGrady though...Barbosa would look good in a Blazer uniform

The date for Elliot's surgery needs to be today, what else has he got to take care of other than getting this repaired and getting healthy as fast as humanly possible? No delays please, for EDubs' sake. Everyone's talking about how this season could be his chance to finally show what he's got, so the only thing that should be on Elliot's mind is to get this taken care of immediately and get back on the floor.

Does anyone know a general range for a torn achilles?

At least this timing could have been worse; it could have been before the start of the season instead of the preseason. Small favors can be a big deal if the timing works out on the other end, I would just hate for him to miss a chance to make his mark this year by not getting enough playing time to get comfortable...

By the way when I was asking about the general range for a torn achilles, I'm asking about the rehab time after surgery... hoping it's only a few months, not one of those 6 to 9 to 12 month things

Isn't that what Chauncey Billups had? If so it will take a long time to recover.

I hope at some point Elliot learns to take it down a notch in practice. This is his second practice injury.

    Unrestricted / Shooting Guard / 6-3 / Indiana Pacers / 11.1 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.5 apg
Creative scorer that can look good on fast-paced teams. Disappointing playoff performance with the Pacers.

Barbosa might be a good pick up right now. Really hate to see Elliot injured again, I believed he would have been a great piece for our bench. I think we NEED another asset to anchor our bench unit.

With the deadline fast approaching for the Thunder to come to terms on a contract extension for James Harden, a potential sliver of hope was heard Wednesday afternoon. Thunder center Kendrick Perkins, speaking following an appearance at a Thunder Fit event at a local middle school, said the two sides are “getting close” on a deal that would keep the reigning Sixth Man of the Year in Oklahoma City.

I mentioned this summer that I thought Elliot, Barton and a lot of players should follow Iverson's example and wrap up supportive ankle, elbow and thigh sleeves to protect from injury. Iverson might have looked like the Mummy on the court, but he stayed on the court even though he bounced off some of the biggest post players in the modern era. I also think shoes are now more designed for speed than support and again....bring back the hightops!

Do we know if he had a complete tear?  If he's getting surgery, I'm assuming it was or very close to.

I tore my achilles playing basketball and I'm still not the same.  Six weeks in a cast, and another month in a boot.  My calf atrophied completely during the recovery and is still (5 years later) noticeably smaller than my normal leg.  The effect on your entire body is pretty bad too.  It messes up your body mechanics because you inevitably end up favoring your good leg.  And we all know what happens when you sit on your ass for a couple months fitness wise.  Suffice to say, the recovery SUCKS.

Of course I was a 35 year old with a day job.  Williams is a young man with nothing to do but rehab so he will come along much faster and have better results.  According to my therapist, he had people get back to light jogging within 4 months, but elite athletes may not be able to compete at a high level for up to 6 months.

I hope so, Uprised. 6 months til Elliot comes back sounds a lot better than "hope to see you next preseason", which seemed to be the popular opinion on our rapidly-deteriorating-into-garbage-tv local coverage, Talkin Ball. It just makes me sick to think about how many injuries that have held back our team, while the teams that are making all the headlines hardly have any to speak of. When does this trend balance out?!?

On the other eternally-optimistic hand, this at least helps clear up the clog that we have at SG... unfortunately we lose one of our better pieces at the position, but at least now we should get a pretty clear view of our other guys' value at the 2spot. When it comes time to package some of our assets for a stronger piece, it will be useful information to know what they can each really do... other than Elliot, that is.

    Get well soon, Elliot!

Just another money pit and injury prone body taking up room on the roster. I know he is a popular player in Portland and I had high hopes for him as well but get rid of him. Claver is the next injury prone playerthat will end up out for the year, why does Portland keep messing around with these guys?
