I think Boomtown needs to cool it. You call him an asshole for being "rude" to the others on here? No one here really states that they are better then the next guy. I think if anything, Boomtown is the one being rude and disrespectful. No need for that here.

but it's okay for cmeese to categorize a bunch of blazer fans who he considers to be doubters of lillard and tell them to suck it, like what, they're not worthy fans or something?  I reacted, yes, but he said it, not me.  I called him a bad name, but it's a part of everyone's anatomy and I've heard worse, so.... take sides if you want.  I'll find more constructive things to do with my time I suppose.  no need to waste my time explaining myself to you and listening to cmeese's lies.

when i first read his comments saying suck it to blazer fans, it sounded like he was calling them all stupid.  he don't even seem to have any remorse about it.  but i'm ignoring him now, so i don't know or care

    So... back to summer league.

Next game starts in about 20 minutes, but before it does I have a couple things to say about our rookies that AREN'T Damian Lillard. He's been the story of summer league and many of us have forgotten to talk about Meyers Leonard and Will Barton. (Hell, a couple of us even forgot to talk about basketball, but we all forgive.)

Minus the starting role and the overall stat-line, I think Will Barton will bring back a lot of the things we lost in the Gerald Wallace trade. He crashes the boards the same way, he scores in a very similar fashion, and he runs the fast break on or off the ball almost exactly like Gerald did, including starting the break with an intercepted pass. He's not as strong or talented, but this was a killer pick up. If he doesn't get minutes at the 2 and 3, I will be very disappointed in the coaching decisions.

Meyers Leonard has been solid. I'm not sure what to think about his post offense yet. It's clear he has a few moves, but the few touches he's had have not ended well. However, any of you basketball players know that the less touches you get, the worse you tend to do when the ball DOES come your way. My top concern is how often he leaves his feet when defending the paint. He needs to learn that, when you are 7'1" with long arms, all you have to do is stick your hands straight up and you will alter most inside shots. Jumping should be for well-timed blocks and any rebounds. He'll learn, but it's something that could be a bit of a liability early in the season (assuming he'll play a lot of minutes right from the get-go).

Good break down D I am very concerned with Leonard's affinity for jumping on defense. Andre Miller and several crafty vets will destroy him with pump fakes and jukes. He needs to stay on the ground as much as possible to avoid fouls. I want him to be aggressive and smart at the same time, sometimes that is a lot to ask for from a rookie.

It's a classic overzealous shot-blocker move. He'll learn to stay grounded, and he'll learn it pretty quick because he'll be hearing it from EVERYONE on the coaching staff and roster. But it's definitely a problem if it's his instinctive move in the post.

Much less exciting game today with Lillard and Leonard sitting out, but it will be nice to see Will Barton as the #1 option.

I am watching the summer league game.  I am not sure how some of these players will make an nba team.  Portland has a full roster as it is.  I have been impressed with Lewis and Bolt.  what will happen to them.  Lillard, Barton, and Leonard are shoe ins to make the Blazer team.

Barton played great today. Hope he and Elliot can split minutes at back up 2.  Then who ever plays better can have the majority of the back up 2 minutes later on the season. I just hope that Claver plays decently. If he dosent were kinda weak at the 3 spot. Unless Barton plays back up 3 than Ewill plays back up 2 guard. Well see how the new coach uses our players...
Does anybody know if Elliot will be ready by opening night?

Will Barton can be fun to watch and I like his effort and activeness, but he's not NBA ready at all. He makes alot of poor decisions and that's when he actually makes a decision, half the time he doesn't know what he's trying to do until it's too late, he has a very hard time finishing plays because of this. He has alot of potential, if he can put on more than a few pounds, work on his decision making, receive some good coaching from the right coach then he could really develop into something great.

Don't know what games you watched benh, but he makes better decisions on the fast break than the entire Blazers squad did last year. Cuts backdoor at the right time too. Mike Rice and the NBA TV commentators made fun of him for a flashy pass he made--classic "too much mustard" comment--but the pass actually hit the numbers of the man he intended it for. He's a good passer and he makes good decisions on defense as well. I'd trust him with 10-12 minutes a game, no question.

he's nba ready. his play definitely is. can board, great teammate, decent defender (good defensive IQ and steals, but needs to work on footwork) and has an all around offensive game- shoot, dribble/drive, heads up passing, throws down. Probably most impressed with him, especially if you consider where he was drafted. Also, the thing I love most was how much he was asking Kaleb questions, constantly taking advice, he's the easiest player I've seen to be coached.

Meyers got some work to do, hoping the fans and org. can deal with being patient with him.

I did not get to see Barton play that much since they broadcast the games here so late. Looking at his stats which is all I can evaluate him by he seemed to get better with each game. Alot of hype around Barton not just here on the boards but from other news he might just be a replacement for E. Will but I think Williams will have something to prove when he gets on the floor, too bad he did not play during the summer league. Meyers got handled in the second game but I heard he had the flu? I am kinda hoping he progesses enough to get the start nod by seasons end. As far as Lillard goes and his assist ratio I think some people are forgetting that he is going to have a couple of people to pass to other than Babbit and summer league crew. Setting  Meyers and L.A. up for the ally-oop a couple of times a game should be a staple not just a play of the game. Once they get that figured out (which is something Felton could not grasp) 15 -18 ppg 12apg I do not think it unreasonable. I would like to see a little more Oscar Robertson than Russel Westbrook which I do not think it would be too far fetched because he definitely has the talent to go either way.

I love Barton too but his battle with EWill be huge in securing a game day chair
    Best battles going into camp
    Price/No Smith
    EWill/Barton
    Claver/Sasha/Babbitt
    Freeland/Leonard

Here is what I see happening going into the season but after camp that could change depending on Freeland/Leonard showdown
12 man roster below: majority of the offense load goes to bold
    Freeland/Leonard
    LMA/Hickson/Jefferies
    Batum/Claver/
    Mathews/EWill/
    Lillard/Price/No Smith
    --------------------------------------------------
Barton, Babbitt, Sasha round out the 15 spots

D Licious, That's probably exactly how the active/inactive roster will look unless we make trades or waive/sign anyone else. I expect Nolan to split his minutes off the bench between the 1 and 2, though. I don't think he'll always be at the point when he's in the game.

Barton did play great. Hope he gets minutes. Have a strong feeling he wont play much tho. He will probably have the same role as Babbit had his rookie season sadly :( Hopefully Sasha gets more minutes than Babbit.

I agree on Babbitt he didn't show much in Summer League almost like he took a step back.. there is no way he can guard a quick 3

D Pickett.. I agree with you on NoSmith needing to play combo... I think the same thing holds true with Barton and EWill needing to guard 2/3 not sure if they can but it would def help their case

I think Barton can guard most 3's (except the guys that NOBODY can guard). I don't know if I would put EWill at the 3 because he probably couldn't defend that position. He's much better guarding back-court players.

Barton will struggle against people like Metta World Peace and other really strong SF's who play in the post. But soft wings like Batum will be easier to guard for him.

Barton looks great but he seems much more of a small forward than a shooting guard. I know he hits 4 3's in his last Summer League but his shot needs to be more accurate down the line if he's going to move to the 2. Good thing Nolan is more suited for the 2 so we don't lose any depth at that position.

I think Barton, with some coaching, could play either sg or sf depending on the team we are playing and who is in those two positions.

Barton would be wise to model his play after Richard Hamilton. They are both skinny shooting guards although Barton could use to bulk up to Rips 190 pound frame.

Boomtown, thanks for starting a conversation on this topic but I must wholeheartedly disagree.  I believe that the whole amateurism argument is a sham anyway.  Many Asian nations have no amateur sports at any level.  Children are identified at a very young age then coached, fed, taught, supported until their athletic career is over. Even U.S. college athletics is far from an amateur sport.  When one home football game brings in millions of dollars, excluding TV rights, shared revenue and bowl revenue; how can you call that an amateur sport?  If it were not for college football and men's college basketball, there would be no college athletic departments of the current scale.  Women's sports would not exist anywhere near the current level without massive amounts of cash from the two main sports.

If a head coach earns an annual salary in excess of a million dollars a year off the backs and legs of "amateur" athletes, where is the purity in that?  Watching the Olympics, I am struck by the number of athletes competing for other countries who learned the game in the U.S.  How many of the current men's basketball opponents attended high school or college in the U.S. to learn the craft?  Then they left to their home country to receive a healthy salary and hero worship to play for their home country.  This whole system is far from amateurish and its time we finally admit it.
I am a fan of cheering our hardworking Blazer team to a championship!
