Portland seems to be placing all of their eggs in one basket and if Hibbert goes back to Indiana we will be well behind the eight ball. This article is assuming Indiana matches Hibbert's offer sheet.

Step One Sign and Trade Nicolas Batum for Nikola Pekovic
Pekovic is not the elite 7'2" shot blocker that Hibbert is but he is a better all around defender. You will find very few players more willing to bang than Pekovic and offensively he is superior to Hibbert.  At 4 million next season Portland would be getting a bargain.
Step Two Sign and Trade Raymond Felton for Toney Douglas and a draft pick. If Portland could get a top 20 protected pick that would be awesome more than likely though we will get a 2nd round pick.

While Portland would have a blaring need at SF by not keeping Batum getting Pekovic would address the need at center and give Portland financial freedom this year and next as he is only signed for just over 4 million for this upcoming season.
Toney Douglas is not my first choice to take back in a trade but the Knicks really want Felton and the only way they get him is if we take back some salary. Douglas is a good tough defender so he is not worthless and he is only under contract for one season.

Step Three Trade Wesley Matthews and Kurt Thomas or Nolan Smith to Chicago for Taj Gibson and Richard Hamilton.
In order for the Bulls to take on Matthews contract we have to absorb one of theirs since Watson, Brewer, and Korver are non-guaranteed Hamilton becomes the obvious choice for the Bulls. Chicago might want to keep Watson around next year and if they do look for them to ask for Thomas over Smith if they decide to let Watson go then getting a young PG to challenge Teague would be a good idea.  Portland would have a team option on Hamilton next season making this only a one season investment and we would get a young elite defensive PF in Gibson to replace Hickson.

Step 4 Trade the rights to Joel Freeland or Victor Claver and Luke Babbit to Toronto in exchange for James Johnson and a conditional draft pick.
Babbitt is the kind of three point shooter that could really thrive from the passing of Jose Calderon who looks like he will be staying in Toronto after they failed to acquire Nash. I believe Toronto would likely ask for Joel Freeland in this trade over Claver but I am not certain so both are an option. Portland gets a good defender and a capable starting small forward in Johnson and a future pick hopefully as good as a lottery protected first round pick but not likely.

I think it is important to look at the team now before continuing to make sure everyone knows where we are.
PG Damian Lillard, Tony Douglas and Nolan Smith (Chicago will likely keep Watson)
SG Richard Hamilton, Elliot Williams, Will Barton
SF James Johnson, Victor Claver (Believe Toronto would take Freeland), Shawne Williams
    PF Lamarcus Aldridge, Taj Gibson
    C Nikola Pekovic, Meyers Leonard

    Step 5 Sign Gerald Green
With his injury history it is important that Portland makes this deal non-guaranteed beyond the first year of the contract.

    Step 6 Waive Shawne Williams
With Green signed and the trade for Johnson, we have very little need for Williams especially since Barton can play the 3 if absolutely needed.

Step 7 Trade the rights to Victor Claver and Nolan Smith to Boston in exchange for Charlotte's second round pick next year gotten from the Jeff Green sanctions.
Portland needs to acquire assets so getting what could be a top 35 pick here seems like a nice move. Obviously, if someone offered a better deal we would take it but I think a high second round pick for both players is honestly the best we can get.

    Step 8 sign Patty Mills
With Nolan being traded Portland could use a third PG and getting someone like Patty would be great. Mills is a favorite of Paul Allen and certainly showed his ability to play in limited time with the Spurs. He would be nice competition for Lillard and give us potential bench scoring and perimeter shooting.

    Step 9 re-sign Joel Pryzbilla
Joel has said he wants to play again and while I like Pekovic and Leonard, Portland could benefit from Joel's veteran leadership, defense and rebounding. Plus this would give Joel a chance to retire a Blazer.

    Step 10 sign Kevin Jones
Seeing the NCAA's only 20-10 player from last year go un-drafted was a huge shock Portland will be lucky to get this guy to help fill out the depth chart.

Here is the final 2012-13 Trailblazers Roster
PG Damian Lillard, Toney Douglas, Patty Mills
SG Richard Hamilton, Elliot Williams, Will Barton
SF James Johnson, Gerald Green, Will Barton
PF Lamarcus Aldridge, Taj Gibson, Kevin Jones
C Nikola Pekovic, Meyers Leonard, Joel Pryzbilla

This team will not win an NBA title next year and it might not even make the playoffs but what it does is give Portland a chance to evaluate their young talent, provide the team tremendous cap flexibility going into next summer and stockpiles additional draft picks.

Portland seems set at PG here Mills and Lillard seem like a nice combination for the future but if neither pan out Portland would not have a lot of money tied up in them. Hamilton remains a solid SG and Portland would have no loyalty to him meaning that if Williams or Barton shine he could be quickly dealt or benched. SF would be our weakest position as Johnson and Green do not provide much depth so adding a veteran here is possible. Johnson and Green if they remain healthy would give Portland nice production additionally, because neither player would be signed beyond next season they could be valuable trade pieces if need be. At PF Portland would be set LA is an all-star and Gibson was one of the NBA's best defenders last year. Pekovic is a stud and I believe the combo of him and Meyers would look good for a long time but if Pekovic regresses we are only committed for one season.

I am sure a lot of you are wondering why build a team that might not make the playoffs. Here is my answer James Harden. Of all the great potential free agents available next year Harden seems like the one most acquirable. Pairing him with LA would be a scary Pick and Roll combo and him and Lillard would make for one aggressive  back court. Additionally, if this team did make the playoffs Portland would have a nice young roster to build around.

After paying Harden a max deal Portland would still have around 20 million dollars to resign Gibson, Pekovic, Johnson and Green. Plus they would have bird rights to Pekovic, Gibson and Johnson giving them even more flexibility.

    Potential 2013-2014 Trailblazers
    PG Lillard, Mills
    SG Harden, Williams, Barton
SF Josh Smith, and a rookie or Johnson and Green
    PF LA and Gibson
    C Pekovic and Leonard

That team certainly seems like a threat especially if Lillard, Barton, Williams, Mills and Leonard develop.

I think its good, but we want smart things(not sayin it isnt smart, because its genious) but we want quick fixes! which is why i think we slow down for a few years! but i want hiibert! i might sound crazy, but hes young! dont expext him to be dwight howard! give him time! i think that this plan isnt worth the time! we have time to develop hibbert! wile portland has many other rookies! I think lillard has the motor to get better himself! so i think we can get better with this! not better than this plan! but a lot better than we have been in a while!

This sounds good, but with the promise of the 2013 draft class looking very good we should look to make trades with the bottom 3-4 teams in the league.

So where did you come up with this? nba 2k12, with no trade overrides? That many trades will not happen, and not all of those sign and trades are even on the board. Love your optimism, and agree that maybe hibbarts numbers arent flashy, but what else do you want? fact is you could get maybe two of those trades, not all of em, and felton is already to far gone.

Which trade is unrealistic other than maybe Felton potentially being off the table, not like Toney Douglas made my team anyways.

These are pretty bad ideas lets begin with Batum trade......Batum is much much much better hes an all around good player he can score and stop allstars from scoring, 2ns raymond felton although not good with blazers is better than Toney Douglas, and that is some low balling if that is offered, 3rd trading wesley woould be bad hes a great scorer and is pretty consistant, 4th Why would we trade our only back up SF and sign two guys just to trade them? theres no point and btw luke babbit has pontential, 5th no, 6th, there most likey gonna be a sign and trade with him already reports on that,7, no, Nolan smith (tho young) has pontential also we just havent seen it yet and victor eh go ahead i could care less,8, no we already re-leased him why resign if we needed him why would we have released him, 9, no point they working out on signing Hibbert (which is better than joel) and joel is getting old and wont be around much longer, lastly i dont know who that is

One Batum clearly does not want to be here so getting a big talent like Pekovic would be great. Getting a pick and Douglas for Felton is a lot better than getting nothing which is what would happen with out a sign and trade. Wesley is fine but he is our most trade worthy player outside of LA and his contract size made this deal necessary especially if we are trying to sign Harden next season. We would not be signing anyone on 4 just trading the draft rights for Freeland who would not be needed with Pekovic and Leonard. 5 we need a sf and he is the best available option. I did not here about S. Williams sign and trade Indiana taking him for Hibbert? I like Patty Mills more than Nolan and trading Nolan is essential to make the room to add Patty. Yah just look how our PG situation worked last year Patty would have been our best PG aside for Felton. 9 The point of this thread was what to do if Hibbert does not sign. Lastly, he is a PF who surprisingly went undrafted this year.

I hope if we trade Batum to Minny we can get some picks or Dwill to go along with Pekovik.
I dont see Felton going to Knicks anymore with Kidd going there, and they seem to want to sign Lin back.

I dont see the Chicago trade happening. Just because CHI is in love with Taj and dont see them giving him up. Havent heard anything about RIP H being on the block anyways...dont know if hes that much of a upgrade over Matthews anyways.

I would look at DJ Augustin ....he could be a solid back up to LIllard.....I doubt that the Bobcats will match because they want Kemba Walker to be there primary PG. Maybe send Claver or Ewill for him.

If Hibbert gets matched then Portland are probably gonna look at Mcgee or Brook Lopez. I hope Mcgee cuz BLopez dosent compliment LAs game too much.

    Lillard , Augustin
    Matthews, Barton, Ewill
    D.Williams , Babbit,
    LA, Freeland
    Hibber or Mcgee, Leonard
Obviously your team is better than this one , but I think this may be a more realistic team. I like your ideas though! :D

Wrong Batum's agent is making up all that bs, until i hear him say it in public i shall believe not believe that, he has never  shown a sign of wanting to be gone and blazers will mostl likely match the offer

As far as Batum not wanting to be here, you apparently didn't keep up on the situation. Nic went on twitter immediately to state clear as day he did NOT say that. It's more BS from his pathetic agent tryna get something neither of them deserve. I'm sick of people buying that Nic said that. It's not even halfway like Nic. When I saw Jaynes tweet that, I immediately dropped all respect I had left for Jaynes. I already had no respect for Nic's agent, who has a knack for making everything more complicated than it needs to be.
Patty Mills and Damian Lillard does not quite work, as Damian is set to be the pg of the future, and patty would still be as much of a challenge as Nolan is now and as if we had acquired Goran Dragic. If Nolan continues to be subpar, he will be found a trade destination.
Pekovic is the only true center and strength Minny has, he won't be moved. You're more likely to see Webster return to Portland than Pekovic.
I will say this til the day he retires, Wesley is VASTLY UNDERAPPRECIATED. He was the one headstrong leader the team had last year, plays his tail off (even on off-games), he's passionate and is a the best defender on this team. People forget, he was brought in to back up Brandon, not take his place. He was dealt that hand at several points though, and I think people are expecting the wrong things because of that. He's one of the brightest spots on this team.
I believe in Neil, Paul, and Larry's ideas for this organization. They've given me no reason to doubt them recently. Keep Nic, go big or go home.

By the way y'all, D-Will is with Brooklyn for near 100 mil now, so don't think even Paul Allen's gonna touch it.
JaVale McGee is re-signing with Denver. That headache is gone. Let him get back for defense on offense and fail to post up on guys half his size for someone else.
Lopez is likely to either stay in Brooklyn or be part of the Howard trade should there be one.

This is priceless.  Cmeese47, is "that guy."

I hadn't made but a few post on the board and he couldn't help himself, "Looks like you almost did your homework."  "Your information is incorrect." - cmeese47

Not only was he wrong, but condicending.  And then I see this post, which is absolute and utter fantasty.  Congradulations on going 1 for 10, and 1 being the insightful buy out of Shawne Williams.

    Highlights:

Trading a player that isn't on our roster (Felton)?  [Once a player is not given a qualifying offer, he becomes free agent, and cannot be traded as he is no longer on the team's roster.]

You have 14 players on a 12 man roster, who's going on IR? Perhaps both of the 2 Bartons you have on your team?

Patty Mills as a veteran, mentor backup for Lillard?

Signing an injury prone Gerald Green (played 212 games in 6 NBA seasons, played in 81 games his 2nd season and never more than 38 games in any other season), and his claim to fame:  Dunking?

The Blazers are magically going to land Josh Smith and James Harden?

The next time you feel inclinded to "correct" one of my posts, don't.

First of all until we renounce the rights to Felton we can do a sign and trade with him. But then again I guess you missed the whole Nash situation going to the Lakers.

Mostly like the players that would not suit up would be Douglas and Jones but the team has 15 roster spots with a minimum of 12 active players.

It was called a depth chart and since Barton can play the two and three he was listed on both I will be sure to spell that out next time.

Patty Mills was never brought in to be a veteran mentor, instead he was an upgrade over Smith and meant to push Lillard and score off the bench.

Green was signed to be a backup and because he could be released next season also because he was cheap.

There is no guarantee anyone is landed but being able to offer two huge contracts would give us an opportunity to make a big impact in free agency.

I will comment on or correct any post I feel like.

I was mad that we did not pick up Barnes in the draft. I knew that Batum would want a whole lot of cash upfront that he aint worth or at least he has not shown any consistancy to get that much if rumors are true. That being said I do not keep up with blogs, tweets, facebook, myspace or flippin smoke signals. If Batum is man enough to have an agent than he should be man enough to tell him to STFU on the he said she said crap. But I guess if he is going to ghost on the court he might as well ghost with his agent. Speaking of ghosts Webster is thee invisible man when it comes to disappearing when you need him I would rather pay Batum the money than get that loser back. Wes Matthews is a dilemma one that I am willing to gamble on for another year his hustle and work ethics are enough to earn him a pass from last years fiasco. Besides that with E. Will and Will Barton he knows his job is on the line at least at the starting post. Although I think he would be much happier being the first one off the bench.

Joel..I think if we did resign him it would be for a short period as we work in Leonard but he would mainly wear a suit for most games this season which may not be a bad idea this is providing we get Hibbert if we dont than by all means and that is if he still wants to play.

Patty Cakes no thanks I will take Nolan Smith either he performs or he gets traded I do not want someone hanging around that gets no playing time.

Although Olshey did not offer names, if he goes the route of choosing an assistant, he is expected to consider Indiana's Brian Shaw, Golden State's Michael Malone, Miami's David Fizdale, Oklahoma City's Rex Kalamian, San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer and Memphis' Dave Joerger. Blazers assistant Kaleb Canales, who went 8-15 as interim coach last season after Nate McMillan was fired, is also expected to be a candidate. Canales will coach the Blazers' Summer League entrant, with help from Dan Dickau and Hersey Hawkins. Oregonian

I think Olshey will try hard to make something happen in the first offseason of his Portland tenure. Problem is, I really don't see a talent to vigorously go after. Next free agency will be that of good centers. I'm a fan of Al Jefferson's game and would love to have him come play in Portland unless Meyers turns into a starting caliber center. I'm not so big on Harden like you are, but having Josh Smith instead of Batum sounds great. If Olshey can turn this starting lineup somehow into...

    Lillard / Matthews / J. Smooth / Aldridge / Jefferson

I'm buying season ticket for the next 4 seasons....

Pekovic has helped my fantasy team nicely, but I think the league has higher expectations on Batum's potential than Pekovic's. Feels like I've been hearing about Batum's damn 'potentials' his entire career.. But I still think Batum is worth more than Pekovic as of right now.

Anyways, I think Freeland with Leonard can be a nice plan B for our center. Give them a year to see if someone comes up big, then go after free agents next summer. Bring in a veteran PG to help our youngsters grow (Bibby?), and I'd like to have Przybilla back too. But really, Josh Smith for Batum will make me cry tears of joy for days.

Cmeese, Kevin Jones signed a partially guaranteed three year deal with Cleveland. Scott Machado is on Houston's summer league roster. He hasn't been signed, but I would have to imagine he has a very good chance at sticking, given Houston's sudden glaring need at pg.
