Update on Roy Hibbert from Mike Wells and it's good for Rip City-
The Pacers are already looking at other options at center. They've reached to out Omer Asik, who was with Chicago last season

    More from Haynes on Batum-
Fomer  assistant coach/current Timberwolves assistant Bill Bayno & Nicolas Batum are tight. Batum still rents out Bayno's home.

Whoever said sign Batum at a contract for a maximum of 7 to 8 million a year is delusional. How much did we pay for Wesley Matthews? Batum is the best shooting forward on the market this year, so to think that he would go for something that low is a bit unreasonable.

Would there be enough to afford both? Watching to free agent frenzy on nba tv last night David Aldridge said that, and we all know, Allen has the money and is not afraid to spend it. IF Portland had to choose, honestly I think you have to go with Hibbert. Centers are hard to find while there are many small forward to either sign/trade for. Will Indiana match?

While I agree that, that is too much money for Batum (if that offer is indeed true), I just don't know whose going to be our starting small forward if we don't match. Claver? Babbitt? Move Wes to the 3?

I think Batum is better at the 2 guard position.  I haven't seen Claver play, but I do think Babbit can potentially fill a role as a starting SF.  If we have Lillard running pick and roll/pop with Aldridge, Hibbert in the post, two quality shooters on the perimeter in Batum and Babbit is dangerous.  I take back my last statement about Batum not being worth it.  If we can afford both Batum and Hibbert then get them both, if not resign Batum and hope for the best with Leonard and maybe Joel Freeland.

I really dont think Batum wants to be in Portland. Being bounced around the line-up by Nate probably left a bad taste in his mouth which was partly his fault. I worried about this when we did not draft Barnes. I do not feel that he is worth the Superstar salary and noway he should make the same amount as Lamarcus. As far as Babbit starting  hmmm... I guess I am willing to let him try only because he had no training camp last year and no real development either. He can guard a wet paper sack at this point but you can teach him to be better. As far as rebounding goes he needs to get a little better, at the end of the season I think he was getting like 6 a game. His shooting can improve a bit which would make him deadly and maybe with a new point guard he can actually get the ball when he is spotted up and not when the point is in trouble and tosses it to him in traffic. You got to remember Durant was as good as Babbit is now on Defense when he came into the league and it took him 5 seasons to get this far playing every game. Babbit is not as good as scorer as Durant (stating obvious) but what do you think would happen with a little more confidence something he had going into the NBA which Nate took away.

Hey I am writing a book! On to Hibbert; lets all send Happy Thoughts to him to sign for Portland. After seeing him in the play-offs I got kind of a man-crush on the dude and really liked the way he played.

So bottom line is Sign Hibbert and send happy thoughts,Batum not worth the max deal, If Babbit is our weakest link at this point than it might not be so bad after all.

I wouldn't mind looking into either Boston guy to fill the 3.... Both Jeff green and mikael pietrus are unrestricted...could Barton play some 3? He would be undersized and a rookie but he is a player.

I was thinking the same thing ^ about jeff green, I wonder if he can come around, but definitely worth it even if for depth. And for my comment before, its not that I don't want hibbert, I just can't imagine them seriously not keeping him.. the pacers have a shot to make it to the eastern conference finals after this past postseason, the east doesnt have any sure bets after chicago and the heat, if they can manage a win over them then they're golden, but they could never do that without hibbert. But to me that's crazy that there's reports about the pacers making an offer to omar asik, I have no clue what they are thinking. Though great for us because he is a top teir center.

    Via OregonLive-
Trail Blazers reach verbal agreement with Roy Hibbert
The team on Sunday reached a verbal agreement on a multi-year contract with restricted free agent Roy Hibbert, widely regarded as the top center prospect on the market.
General manager Neil Olshey met with Hibbert’s representatives after free agency opened at 9:01 p.m. Portland time Saturday night and, according to reports from SI.com and CBSSports.com, offered Hibbert a maximum four-year, $58 million contract. Olshey refused to discuss contract specifics Sunday morning, but confirmed the team was “engaged in negotiations” with the prized free agent center.

“We intend to enter into an offer sheet once the moratorium period ends,” Olshey told The Oregonian in an e-mail.

While we can verbally agree to deals, they can not be signed until July 11th and the Pacers will have 3 days to match. It's going to be one long 2 week period for Blazer fans!

No, they have 3 days after an offer sheet has been signed which will probably be on the 11th. So they will most likely have until the 14th to match.

as much as I would love to see Hibbert in Portland I do not see that happening.  With Kevin Pritchard pulling the strings in Indiana I see no way Kevin would let their all star center go.  I think they tried to get Hibbert cheap and it backfired.  They will match the offer and carve it off to experience.  I hope we have a plan B.

    From NBA.com-
It appears that the Rockets made Asik an offer that he has accepted. So cross him off the list?
The three-year, $25.1-million offer sheet (as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports) they have agreed to with center Omer Asik will reportedly pay him $15 million in the final season. In that same season, the Bulls are scheduled to pay guard Derrick Rose $17.8 million and forward Carlos Boozer $16.8 million. Word is Boozer would be amnestied before that season.

Just because Hibbert says he will sign the offer sheet does not mean he would rather play for Portland.

Of course he will sign it, that way Indiana, where Hibbert has repeatedly claimed he would like to stay, will be forced to match the offer.

Omer Asik has an offer for 3 years at about 25Mil can someone come in and offer Asik 4years at 40mil sometime between now and 7/11 and can Asik choose which one he will accept?  I am not sure the power of a verbal at this time.  How strong is the commitment?  How many offers can a team put forth to different players?

Nothing is formal until July 11; however, it is not likely someone is willing to offer Asik more than 8.3 million a season but if a team was willing to offer a 4th year he might consider. I had expected him to get 4 years 30 million, which was the max I would offer him so do not expect Portland to join the fray.

Joel is a good, reliable backup, but he didn't light too many fires last season when he came back.  But he does so many little things that aren't always obvious even if he doesn't light up the scoreboard.  If the Blazers sign Hibbets, and another big free agent player, then they may be less likely to bring him back.  This is too bad because he is a bruiser.

I hate free agency every year people consistently get a lot more money than they deserve and it ruins the league and this year it looks like we are off to another great start. I mean when J. Holliday wants a max deal you know the entire league is screwed.

Amen, cmeese. If guys like Holiday start getting max deals, all 30 owners will be bankrupt by 2018. LOL

And I have to say, if it's money that keeps us from signing Batum, I can't see how we'd go for Iggy, who probably commands almost twice what Nic does.

If Batum makes 12.5 per year as indicated by the offer then Iggy might be a reasonable option. Iggy will makes 13.5 million next year then 14.7 and finally 15.9. The last two years start to get real costly but he is worth the 2 million more per season average than Batum. Especially because we would get to dump Matthews salary in any deal for him.

So just the 14.7 and 15.9? That's not bad at all. Although, if you start dealing people like Matthews, Luke, Nolan (I'm not against it, btw). You're back to only having one guy at a position. That could cause more problems than just re-signing Nic. This might be a damned if you do damned if you don't.

In my opinion, Hibbert really does want to play for Portland. And that reason is #12, LaMarcus Aldridge. As a center, who wouldn't want to play alongside LA? It makes both of their lives so much easier.

Also, during Chad Ford's chat today, he says Indy is still "on the fence" in regards to matching the reported offer Portland issued-
     Spencer (Indiana)
What are the odds of Indiana matching Portland's offer on Roy Hibbert?

    Chad Ford
51%. They are really on the fence. If they can find a replacement that they are comfortable with for cheaper, they may let him go. Chris Kaman is coming in today into Indy. Personally I feel that's a pretty big downgrade, but Larry Bird has been a huge fan of Kaman's.
In the same chat, he mentions Batum as well-
     Nate (Kansas)
If the Blazers get Hibbert, do think that they will still match the 12-13 mil per year offer from Minnesota on Batum?

    Chad Ford
Yes. I think they are keeping Batum as long as his contract stays in the parameters we've been talking about.

Well if we could get a team like Toronto or someone involved things would be a lot easier considering their large trade exception. The problem is we do not have a 1st round pick next year which makes it harder. If we could deal Matthews to someone like the Raptors for their trade exception and a pick that would be a nice start but with them taking Ross in the draft that is not likely. -

Just thought of an idea. If Portland does sign Roy Hibbert, and Batum's contract is too large to also take on, an option here would be to sign and trade with Minnesota. Remember they just got Chase Budinger in a trade and would not start over Batum. If Portland got Budinger in return, it would be a step down, but is still a solid young small forward

Hill is a very underrated PG. Love his maturity, composure, and IQ.

How much influence do you think a player's desires have in the restricted free agency situation. Hypothetically if Hibbert's agent went to Kevin Pritchard and said he really wanted to go to Portland and didnt want Indiana to match, do you think that would influence the Pacers front office at all?

Looks like all the mid-level players on the team are going to find a new home somewhere else with the possible exception of Pryz.  Someone needs to mentor Meyers. These days, most teams do center by committee with the exception of those team with a Dwight Howard-type center.  With Meyers, Pryz and hopefully Hibbert, those 18 fouls and 20 rebounds per game will help relieve a lot of pressure from LA. Now if we can get our "quicks" to match the bigs, should be fun ride.   My only concern area is distribution.  Have to see how Lillard does on that area.

IMO part of the reason the Heat beat OKC is the fact that LeBron was a much better distributor than anyone on the Thunder.  Who will be the Blazer distributor?

According to Chris Haynes, the Trail Blazers reached out to Chauncey Billups-

CSNNW.com has learned from a source close to the situation that the Trail Blazers are one of several teams who have reached out to the representatives of unrestricted free agent point guard Chauncey Billups.

The Trail Blazers need a veteran point guard to help mentor their new franchise point guard in Damian Lillard, and Billups would be an ideal candidate. I'm told that, “Billups is exploring all of his options.”

zkelly you will look 14 again if Indy matches and everyone who said nah can't get Hibbery was right. I think everyone on the forums was at least interested in Hibbert but half of us believed that Indy would match any offer including a max deal. If they do not well then we got our guy but he did not come cheap.
