Free Agency is officially upon us! According to Woj, Omer Asik was one of our first targets-
After Houston tonight, Blazers GM Neil Olshey will meet with Chicago center Omer Asik and make him an offer, sources tell Y! Sports.
To clarify, a Portland contingent is meeting with Omer Asik tonight, but Olshey was meeting with a different player, source tells Y! Sports.

I'm guessing you quoted this straight off of hoopshype. On an earlier update, they said that Eric Gordon will meet with Portland. Not sure if that is where Olshey may be, as it says he is heading to an unknown location.

It doesn't appear that Steve Nash will be a target for the Trail Blazers-

    Marc Stein-
No midnight meetings planned for Steve Nash. Sources say he's holding off on face-to-face chats w/reps from Raps & Knicks until later Sunday
    Joe Freeman-
Do not expect  to pursue stars in decline or aging vets for quick fix. Steve Nash, Andre Miller, Chris Kaman, etc, not targets.

Yea, according to Chris Broussard, Portland will be meeting with Eric Gordon-
Eric Gordon will visit Indiana Sunday, Houston Monday & Phoenix Tuesday. He will also meet with Portland & perhaps Charlotte & Dallas.
Gordon, the New Orleans Hornets' restricted free agent, is seeking a max, 4-year, $58 million deal, sources say.
But Sam Amick reports that we shouldn't get too excited-
Not to spoil the fun for suitors of restricted free agent Eric Gordon, but source says N. Orleans will match max offer if he gets one.

Huge news that just came out from Sam Amick in regards to Pacers center Roy Hibbert-
Source: Portland GM Neil Olshey & team prez Larry Miller visited restricted free agent center Roy Hibbert tonight in DC, offered max deal
Indiana did not offer a max deal, and Hibbert is now leaning to Blazers unless Pacers match. One other unnamed team offered max.

I think that news just came out, it's Roy Hibbert. I'm expecting Indiana to match but the fact they didn't offer him a MAX deal right away makes me think we have a chance.

According to Joe Freeman's writeup, it appears the keys to the offense are being handed over to Damian Lillard, so don't expect a point guard with a big game and name to be signed-
While Lillard almost certainly will be given the reins to the team on the first day of training camp, Leonard is much more of a project. Olshey did not draft him No. 11 overall to sit on the bench in a suit during games, but he also didn't select him to start opening night.
"We're looking for players that are impact-level players in this league that can help us win now while also growing with LaMarcus (Aldridge) and the rest of our core," Olshey said.

For those fans hoping for Steve Nash, Andre Miller or Chris Kaman in a Blazers uniform, it would be a good time to refocus your imagination. The Blazers aren't looking for a star on the downside of his career or a mid-tier starter to plug a hole.

And of course the latest on Nic Batum from Freeman-
As for Batum ... his agent, Bouna Ndiaye, didn't want to reveal names of teams expected to be biggest suitors for  small forward.
But one league source said to expect Minnesota, Cleveland and Toronto to chase Batum vigorously.
    And what he wrote about-
Batum's agent, Bouna Ndiaye, declined Saturday afternoon to comment on Batum's impending free agency. Ndiaye was expecting to meet with teams once the free agency period started, but refused to reveal specifics. One league source said Batum's leading suitors could be Toronto, Minnesota and Cleveland.

But no matter what team pursues Batum, the Blazers will have leverage in retaining the small forward. Not only will the Blazers have 72 hours to match any contract offer sheet Batum signs during free agency, they also can offer him more years (five instead of four) and higher annual raises (7.5 percent instead of 4.5) in any deal.
In a perfect world, the Blazers would work out a handshake agreement with their top free agent target and then shift focus to Batum -- matching another team's offer if necessary. But should Olshey strike out on his top two or three choices, the Blazers could initiate talks with Batum rather than sit back and evaluate the market. And if Olshey indeed comes up empty, the Blazers probably would pursue lower-level free agents on short contracts that would plug roster holes and preserve cap space for next summer.

Do you think Raymond Felton is going somewhere?
My prediction for starting lineup is Lillard, Wesley, Batum, Aldridge, Leonard. If we can pick up Hilbert, it will be a good pickup for the Blazers. Hickson can start or if Hilbert is signed, he should be a starting C, and Hickson and Leonard can come off the bench. Smith, Flynn, and Babbitt still need to improve. Williams is not really ready. Crawford is out. Thomas, C. Smith, Pryz are not really useful anymore.

I would be 1000% shocked if Raymond Felton returned to the team next year. From all of the media reports, Lillard is the guy. We are handing him the reigns and seeing where he takes us!

As for Meyers starting, I just don't see it. Quick and Freeman have been reporting that the team seems him more of a project than Lillard so they will look to get someone in who can play right away, hence the offers to Asik and Hibbert.

Wow! I thought Hibbert was out of the question, but I would love to see him in a Blazers uniform. Can we afford Nic AND Hibbert? Maybe but it's not guaranteed.

If we lose Nic Batum to, let's say based on need, Cleveland, what do we do about the gap at SF? Grant Hill is the kind of vet that Olshey is not trying to sign. The SF class in free agency is horrible. We'd be in a similar situation if we'd taken Barnes over Lillard, but what do we do? Trade for a SF or start Luke Babbitt (pleeeeease not the latter)?

Love that were going after him. He would be a GREAT pick up but I doubt they dont match. I really hope we can get Eric Gordan if Hibbert stays in Indiana. If he gets matched also i hope we can go for Carl Landry and Ome Asik. Landry would replace Hickson.....this guy can ball. Would like to get another scoring option for Portland to help out LA. Like maybe Rudy Gay or Joe Johnson doubt those guys are available tho.

Adding Gordon or Hibbert instantly makes us a Top 5 team out West next season in my opinion. I really hope we land Hibbert and then match any offer Batum gets. A Hibbert/Aldridge/Batum frontcourt is about as lethal as it gets defensively. OKC would have a very difficult time matching up with that.

Also, I wouldn't worry about Meyers Leonard getting lost in this. Just because we're going after Asik and Hibbert doesn't mean we wasted a lottery pick on Leonard. Meyers is a full six years younger then Roy so being able to learn under Hibbert will only benefit his game down the line and take a lot of pressure off of him as well.

Hibbert would be ideal, Rudy Gay would be nice, no thanks on Joe Johnson, Asik averaged 3.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 21 minutes in the playoffs, did a little better at 3.1 points and 6 rebounds in 15 minutes in the regular season. Basically, he is 7 year younger Joel Przybilla. Could be a decent role player but nothing to get extremely excited about.

Batum has a serious offer from Minnesota according to Chris Haynes-
Portland Trail Blazers restricted free agent forward, Nicolas Batum, has been contacted by the Minnesota Timberwolves and an offer was discussed and the two sides will meet in Minnesota later today to deliberate on it further, according to a source very close to the situation.

The detailed figures that are being mulled over is a four-year, $45-50 million deal.

Haynes also mention that Batum plans to meet with the Raptors and Hornets. If those numbers are correct, that's a four-year deal STARTING at, at least, 11.25 million and going as high as 12.5 million a season. I really want to keep Batum, but if that's the market...

Yea, Asik is a restricted free agent as well so the Bulls may still match. I definitely wouldn't go very high on Omer. As for Batum, it really all hinges on Indy. If they don't match, I'd like to keep Nic at all costs because he'd be the perfect fit here and we'd be one of the best teams out West. But if Indy matches, then I think $12+ million for Nic to be our 2nd best player is probably too high. I saw on another board that someone brought up a possible sign and trade with the Hornets with Nic going there and Eric Gordon coming here.

Houston's reportedly going to make Asik an $8/yr offer - via REALGM

The Rockets are prepared to offer Omer Asik an annual contract offer in the $8 million range.

Asik is a restricted free agent of the Chicago Bulls.

If that's their offer, then I'll pass. If he signed here for that much, he'd be the 2nd highest paid player on the team!

    Just read this on hoopshype.

(Austin) Rivers said he would be comfortable playing either point guard or shooting guard.

(Monty) Williams likes the idea of restricted free agent Eric Gordon — whom the Hornets expect to re-sign — and Rivers playing in the back court together at times, giving New Orleans two players in the backcourt who can create their own shots from either the perimeter or on the drive.

Rivers is also eager to see how the presence of (Anthony) Davis helps him and fellow Hornets guards run the pick-and-roll offense.

“I’ve been thinking about it all the time. … I can throw the ball basically anywhere and those long arms can go and catch it and dunk it,” Rivers said. “It’s going to be cool. I know Eric is probably grinning, too, and Jarrett Jack and (Greivis) Vasquez — all these guys.”

Rivers said he hoped he would get to play for Williams in New Orleans, and so did his family. Williams became friends with Doc Rivers when they were teammates with the New York Knicks in the 1994-95 season. They spent part of a second season together in San Antonio. Rivers was later Williams’ coach in Orlando for three seasons.

    via The Associated Press

Looks like if Monty Williams has anything to say about it that sign and trade wont happen.

Yeah, that's too much for Batum. Honestly, I think 7-8 is about right, given that you have no idea whether or not he shows up. If you could count on him showing up every night, then the offer is more reasonable.

Wait, if the Hornets are expecting to sign a max offer for Eric Gordon, why aren't teams being evil to the "expected" upcoming powerhouse in New Orleans and offer him a Max contract?  If New Orleans are sure of Gordon, can't we force them to pay an extra penny on him?

As for Hibbert... not sure if we should be offering him max.  Indiana can't afford it, but if they do resign him, we're basically messing with a team that is absolutely no threat to us at all.

Is it safe to say you’ll bring in a veteran point guard?

We’ve been talking about it, but I don’t know at what level, you know what I mean? But I do think that guys like Damian and Nolan are gonna need a guy to show them the ropes. I can tell you how invaluable it was, we had some classy big guys with DeAndre Jordan that mentored him and he was a little bit of a project. And that worked out. I’ve seen the growth. All you have to do is see the growth of Eric Bledsoe after spending four months of his life with Chris Paul and Chauncy Billups and Mo Williams, three of the classiest leaders in the league at their position. It accelerated his growth exponentially so whether it’s a guy that’s going to be on the floor ahead of him or it’s gonna be a guy as a quarterback coach to guide him through the process I do think it’s important to have somebody here for him.

That was neil olshey, I don't know why you think signing a veteran point gaurd is a "quick fix". and he never said he wouldn,t get a point gaurd on the downside of his career, someone who can mentor lillard. we'll be signing a veteran gaurd you can count on it. and not a goran dragic veteran, but also probably not andre miller veteran/someone who is a year to year veteran, which is why i think nash will come because he's looking for 3 years, and by the 3rd yr at the least he'll be the role player not lillard. but any rookie gaurd can use some mentoring as long as he still gets heavy playing time.

And just gonna say, the pacers arent stupid, theyre going to match any offer. He's the glue to that team making it to the playoffs, that would be the worst decision a GM could ever make, and they do have the cap flexibility.

I don't see Joel coming back if we sign another center. Between potentially Hibbert/Asik and Leonard, there's no need to sign Joel to be our 3rd string center. I don't think he plans on coming back just to ride the pine.
