*UPDATE* Freeland & Claver Expected To Sign With Trail Blazers According To Ken Berger & Chris Haynes

Joel Freeland And Victor Claver Will Factor Into Trail Blazers' Summer Plans - via Joe Freeman
The former first-round draft picks have spent the past few seasons in the Spanish ACB League developing their games and preparing for a move to the world's highest level of basketball, and it appears the time to make that move finally has arrived. Two members of the Blazers' front office, Joe Cronin and Steve Rosenberry, traveled to Europe last week to visit the duo, and both expressed a desire to make the leap to the NBA next season.
"We'd really like to bring them both over," Blazers interim general manager Chad Buchanan said. "We're going to be aggressive to get them signed and get them in a Blazers uniform next season. Any deal will have to make sense for Joel, for Victor and for the Blazers and our offseason plans. But if we had a choice, we'd like to get them both signed."
"The NBA is a dream for him," Calvo said of Freeland. "That's the top of the mountain for any basketball player. But it's something that has to come at the right time with the right conditions. It's a big jump for my client in all respects. It's not all about money. He has to go to a situation where his basketball can keep growing ... where he's going to have a very important role. He's not going to go to a team to watch games on the bench, where there are three players in front of him."
Buchanan said Freeland's offensive repertoire features a solid midrange jumper and a consistent jump hook, and he excels playing in the high post as well as at the elbow. The Blazers, who are desperate for frontline help, also like Freeland's toughness and "motor." The England native, who will compete in the Summer Olympics, is expected to visit the United States for two weeks in June to play in a series of exhibition games in Houston.

"Joel has put in his time over there and gotten better," Buchanan said. "He's ready for a new challenge. I would definitely say that he's a priority for us."
"We're high on both players," Cronin said. "And they are intrigued about the possibility of coming over. Nothing is a lock, but there is a good chance it will happen this year. We'd be very happy if we could get them over next year."

I've been wanting to see Freeland in a Trail Blazers uniform ever since we drafted him back in 2006 and he could also be an affordable post addition. Freeland's name was always the one who got tossed around in regards to our overseas players coming to the States, so it's a little out of left field to hear that Claver playing in Rip City is a real possibility. I haven't seen Joel play since he suited up for our Summer League team all the way back in 2006 but according to Chad Buchanan's report, he seems to be an offensively skilled big man, something we could definitely use next to LaMarcus Aldridge. The best part about adding Freeland is that he just turned 25 in February so he hasn't hit his peak yet and judging by his statistics overseas, he seems to be progressing quite nicely. Claver, on the other hand, will turn 24 in September, seems to have a lot of the qualities that a Travis Outlaw brought to the table when he played the stretch four for us. According to his Draft Express profile, Victor's strengths are his ability to finish around the basket, athleticism, 3-Pt range, and ability to catch and shoot. If for nothing else, let's bring them over to Vegas for Summer League and see what they've got!

I might not even get excited then. Unless they both have killer intangible impacts on games, neither has very impressive numbers, and you can always expect a Euro's stats to take a pretty significant dive during his first NBA season. 10-minute role players at best. How about a starting Center, PG, and SF while you're at it?

I like Freeland but his rebound numbers are a concern. I want a big time rebounder to pair with LA or we need some big time rebounders from our PG, SG and SF we won't get that from Matthews, Batum and I do not really see it among any of the free agent point guards.

It seems like if we re-sign Hickson and Batum along with bringing over these two, plus as many as 4 draft picks that our cap space will be pretty non-existent. We need to be sure that bringing over Freeland and Claver is worth cutting into our cap room.

trying to train Batum took 5 years and he still reverts to euroball, not thinking this is a good idea. I would rather keep Batum than have to go through another 5 years hoping to get something out of them. It seems about 1% of europlayers can contribute over here about like our soccer does over there.

    Freeland Given NBA Deadline-
Joel Freeland has been given until July 10 to agree a €1 million buyout with Unicaja Malaga if he wants to jump to the NBA next season.
“I want to win something and if it can be in (Malaga), all the better. I have a contract here and that’s all I’m thinking about. Like every player, I’d also love to play in the NBA. If I get the opportunity this summer, I don’t know. I can’t say if I’d say yes or no.”

Victor Claver could make the jump to the NBA next season - via Marca

The article was written entirely in Spanish so here are some of the highlights translated-
Victor Claver could undertake the adventure of the NBA next season.  The versatile Spanish international, who this season has averaged 8.4 points and 3.5 rebounds in the league Endesa, values seriously make the leap this summer to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Claver has existing contract with Valencia Basketball (with the one just to qualify to the semifinals of the League Endesa), but has a very affordable exit clause.

I thought I heard Claver already opted to stay where he was. He has a bum knee anyway, he had high potential before the injury but since he has returned he hasn't shown it. Portland also would have to use salary cap space to sign him even though they have the rights to him, it has been like 3 or 4 years since they drafted him.

Leave Claver but I like Freeland.

Joe Freeman is also reporting the same-
After 2-day pursuit, I finally reached Joel Freeland's agent, Rafa Calvo, who confirms reports that and Freeland are close to deal.
There are some issues with Malaga buyout, however. The can pay 500,000 Euro, but Freeland and his camp must come up with the rest.

We do have some depth now just not sure this was such a great move. But both contracts seem reasonable
