Is this the first of many (double-doubles) for Nicolas Batum?
Yes: He scores 15+ easily & now the rebounding is coming around (8+ rebounds three times since March 16) (4)

No: It took 54 games to get his first (4)

Trail Blazers (25-28) vs. Jazz (27-26)

The first of three matchups against the Jazz takes place tonight at the Rose Garden. Utah got the first win of the season series, defeating Portland 93-89 back on January 30th. But as is the case with nearly all opponents previously played during this season, the rosters have drastically changed. Out for the Jazz are veteran wing players Josh Howard and Raja Bell, which has ignited somewhat of a youth movement in Utah, allowing second-year small forward Gordon Hayward and rookie Alec Burks time to develop. And it's paid off. Hayward had his best overall month during March's 19 games, averaging 13.2 points, inlcuding shooting a nice .378 clip from downtown, 4.6 rebounds, and 3 assists in 31 minutes of action. Burks has seen his playing time nearly double from January (12 mpg) to March (21 mpg) and he's provided a nice scoring punch off the bench, putting in 9 per night. But if you're Portland, don't be afraid of doubling any of Utah's bigs and leaving Alec open as he shot just 4-for-18 from 3-point land in March.

Speaking of Utah's bigs, they have quite a handful of talented big men. In a league where center and traditional power forwards are becoming a dying breed, it seems like the Jazz are hoarding them all to themselves. Utah will start with Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap in the frontcourt but also has the luxury of bringing in their 6-11, 262 lb rookie, Enes Kanter along with second year rising star Derrick Favors who goes 6-10, 246 himself. This doesn't bode well for an undersized Trail Blazers team who were already out-rebounded, 51-37, in Utah earlier this year and that was WITH Marcus Camby and Gerald Wallace on the roster. It could become an even more daunting task for Portland if Joel Przybilla isn't able to go tonight after having to sit out with a sore knee. While the starting combo of Aldridge and Hickson provide much more of an offensive punch, they give up a lot in size. Off the bench the Trail Blazers could throw out Thabeet, who is the tallest player in the league, but he's not as wide-bodied as his counterparts and Craig Smith, who always living up to his moniker "The Rhino" on the floor but what he makes up for with fight and tenacity gives up in height. To me, it's obvious. This game will be won or lost on the backboards.

Lastly, I'll be interested in seeing who gets the backup point guard minutes tonight and going forward the rest of the way. It was Nolan Smith but then he had an ear infection which caused him to miss Friday's game in Los Angeles and his minutes were given to Jonny Flynn who played well in L.A., racking up 5 points, 3 assists and just 1 turnover in 15 minutes and did even better the next game against the Wolves where he scored 4 points, handed out 7 dimes (only 2 turnovers),  and grabbed 3 boards in just 17 minutes. And frankly, he should have had more assists had his teammates cashed in on some of the spoon-fed passes he was feeding them. I've been really impressed by his speed, ability to run the pick and roll, and overall court vision. Maybe Nolan was on the bench last night because his ear was still acting up and he sees the floor again tonight? Or maybe Jonny took advantage of an opportunity and Coach Canales likes what he sees in Flynn? We shall find out tonight.

the blazers looked for this loss with no defense, missed shots, what happened to crashing the offensive and defensive boards? All I saw was a sea of green on the boards. this game made me sick to my stomach. They had something that worked in the first quarter then gave up on it just to hand the jazz the win. I cant wait to see failton traded for a real point guard that doesnt have such a big head (like Branden Roy man I miss you Brandon!!) a point guard that plays for the blazers instead of our opponents. I am so tired of hearing how hard it is for the blazers because of back to back games this season its that way for everyone MAN UP!! If I was fortunate enough to play for a professional team I would bring 200% every night like brandon roy did and not let it go to my fat head like felton does. I would have liked to see Flynn in a lot more minutes tonight and driving the lanes like he was in the first quarter to open up all those nice 3 point looks the guys got tonight. what a melt down tonight
I am a fan of the NBA fining referee's for obvious stupid calls and HARD AGRESSIVE DEFENCE FROM START TO FINISH NOT WAITING TO DIG A 10-30 POINT HOLE

    Post-Game Quotes:
Coach Kaleb Canales on if it is time to go young?

We’re staying in the moment and we’re taking it game by game. Like I said, this one is going to hurt until 12:01 tonight and we have to turn the page and look forward for tomorrow.”
    Coach Canales on Utah's size-
“They had 56 for the game. That was a point of emphasis before the game and like I mentioned, I thought we came out with a very, very good first quarter. You have to give them credit, they responded well. They played to their strengths. We did have 40 rebounds. They ended up with 12 offensive, I think they only had 3 at the half. We talked about try to have them duplicate that and you just have to give them credit for crashing the boards.”
Nicolas Batum on bad inbounds pass-
“We lost the game before. We should not be in this situation. We were up 15 in the second quarter, we controlled the game and now we started to relax. We started relaxing in the second quarter – we should not be in this situation.”

“It was bad luck. Like I said, we don’t lose the game on this action. We lost the game way before.”

“That’s on me. That’s on me because I have to watch everything. Ray was wide open in front of me but I have to watch the guy behind him also. He was wide open, so I give him the ball but I didn’t see the guy coming.”

    Batum on Matthews' night-

“It was huge. He stepped up tonight. We missed Jamal tonight so he stepped up. We knew the rotation would be different today so he knew there would be more playing time so he did a good job tonight.

    J.J. Hickson on the game-
“We had control of the ball game early in the first half. We kind of let them get back into it. We have to give them credit, they’re a hard fighting team. They went to a big lineup that kind of had us scratching our heads. But it worked and you have to give them credit.”

As I've stated many times, this season to me is not about wins and losses. It's about looking ahead to the future and seeing if any of the pieces we have now currently are in the cards. We lost. To many its the sole purpose of watching a game, spending time nestled up to the radio or showing up for the live event. But even in defeat, there was a lot of positives to take home. No, this isn't a morale victory post. These are legitimate things the Trail Blazers can take away from tonight's game and use them for benefit in the future.

And it was the chess match that was held at the Rose Garden, and no I'm not talking about Elliot Williams schooling a bunch of students. Two young, but up and coming coaches faced off. In one corner, we have our own wunderkid, Kaleb Canales, who came from unpaid intern to head coach of the Trail Blazers in less than a decade coaching just his 11th game. Opposite him is former NBA player and second-year coach Tyrone Corbin who earned his stripes as Jerry Sloan's lead assistant. Kaleb had him confused early on as the Trail Blazers raced out to an early 35-22 lead after one. Przybilla and Aldridge were too much for Jefferson and Millsap to handle down low and as our bigs neutralized theirs, it allowed our wins to shine. In the opening 12 minutes, Wesley Matthews scored 12 points and the team connected on 5 triples.

Knowing he had to counter or the game would be signed, sealed, and delivered, Coach Corbin went BIG, inserting Derrick Favors at power forward and subbing out C.J. Miles in favor of Paul Millsap roaming the court as a small forward . While Millsap is only 6-8, he goes 258 lbs which is a load for the 200 lb Batum to tango with. Coach Corbin's move paid dividends as Utah took advantage of the Millsap/Batum matchup and stormed back, cutting a once 13-point deficit to just three at the break. Now this move doesn't work unless Millsap can guard Batum on one end and take him outside on the other.

Two important things happened here. One, Nicolas didn't attack Paul off the dribble. Rather he settled for jumpers off the dribble which played into Utah's hand. Not only are jump shots a lower percentage look but it keeps Millsap out of any foul trouble. And two, Millsap can ball. He must have lost some weight because he looked nimble out there and was able to dribble drive to the basket and once he got Batum or Babbitt in that position, he was lights out, simply too powerful to stop in the paint.

To me the highlight of the night was Coach Canales' next move. He saw that Utah went with three posts on the floor along with Tinsley and Hayward in the backourt. Well, with that lineup, only Gordon Hayward is a threat from outside, so Kalen dialed up the zone which confused Utah in turnover after turnover. A once 11-point lead in the third turned into a Trail Blazer 3-point lead late in the 4th. Utah only exposed the zone one time late in the fourth with a nice cut to the basket. But other than that, it was Utah's Kryptonite.

To me, the sign of a good coach is adjusting on the fly. It's easy (or shall I say easier) to make corrections in the film room the day after. But to see what the other team is doing and counter that with something even better is an amazing sign and one that really should come as no surprise from a Coach like Kaleb who has been watching more film than anyone in the biz. It was just one of the many tests that'll be thrown his way, but on this night Kaleb passed and did so with flying colors.

Sad loss. But guys had good games though. Batum and LMA were good. Wesley was wow. A very intense game overall. Wish it had turned out better. :(

coach was fine this game people just have to execute and not dribble off your foot or not pay attention to the defender and let him take the ball right out of your hands

Felton needs to sit, babbitt should have been on the floor for the 3 at the end of the game, another close game lost because of turnovers and lack of execution. that loss might have dropped us out of Playoff contention if it has we should play Jonny and smith at the PG, forget felton!

Felton needs to be fired for that performance last night.  Single handedly lost the game, I almost think he was paid off he did such a bad job over and over and over in the final few minutes.  Total and complete failure, one of the worst trades in Blazer history to get a point guard THAT BAD and stick with him.  Bench him the rest of the year and don't play him EVER AGAIN.  Can't hold onto the ball, can't pass, can't guard, can't shoot....  You know the things point guards are supposed to do.

maybe we found a spot for Luke. He really aint that good at defense I think that will come around eventually. Clutch shooting does not seem to bother him so maybe in the final minutes of the game if 3 is needed toss him the ball. Robert Hoary did not get 7 rings because of defense (although that was part of it) he got 7 rings because he couold knock down the clutch shot until he failed and when he failed he retired,But he retired with 7 rings from 3 differant teams. As far as Nic goes we have been grooming this guy for 5 years now? 6? He is not worth Lamarcus money he has got the consistancy bug like the rest of the team.I am not sure what he is being paid he probably desserves a little more but not what he wants.

@django... aside from the fact that you have JAZZ in your name (suspect). Was it Ray Felton's 8 assists or 9 boards that lost the game. I'm not sure which you're pointing out. I get that he had a costly turnover at an inopportune time, but half the blame of a turnover on inbound also goes to the lazy inbound pass. Anyway, cool it with the middle-school accusations. Any time someone says a player "single-handedly lost it," I want to know what the other 4 guys were doing while this player apparently handed the game over to the opponents.

Felton had two turn overs down the stretch and that can't happen in a close game, he needs to take care of the ball - period, even if he had 15 assists and turned over the ball twice in closing time I would think that he is not trustworthy. If you were the coach or the gm would you have faith in this guy down the stretch, honestly, I think most wouldn't, not to hit the clutch shot, not to make the clutch pass, not to run the play that gets us the the right play for a win in a close game, if you can say yeah I have faith in this guy to consistently do his job, then why defend him, Felton is a bum.
