Trail Blazers (21-25) vs. Grizzlies (25-19)

The fourth game of the Kaleb Canales era takes place Thursday night at home in the Rose Garden against the Memphis Grizzlies. Currently, Memphis is sitting in sixth place in the ever-changing Western Conference playoff race with their 25-19 record. Spanning from February 8th through March 7th, the Grizzlies were the hottest team in the NBA, winners of 11 of their 13 games played. And even though their All-Star power forward, Zach Randolph, returned three games ago, Memphis is just 1-2 in those contests including a home loss to the Raptors and more recently, a 119-110 loss at the hands of the Kings in Sacramento Tuesday night. Their recent poor play could be directly linked to team chemistry and not being used to playing with Z-Bo back in the lineup, so it could just take Memphis time to get back into a rhythm. But the Grizz made a head-scratching move by signing a dynamic personality in Gilbert Arenas to a contract. He has yet to suit up for Memphis so this may or may not have an affect on the game against the Trail Blazers.

This will be the second of three meetings between the two squads. Portland is already up 1-0 in the season series, winning 97-84 nearly two months ago in the Rose Garden. In that contest, Portland received 10 points and 33 rebounds from Gerald Wallace and Marcus Camby -- two players departing at the trade deadline. And with one of the league's best rebounders back in the blue for Memphis, in Zach Randolph, the burden now falls upon Joel Przybilla, LaMarcus Aldridge, and the rest of the Trail Blazers frontcourt to keep Marc Gasol and Randolph off the glass.

Aside from winning the battle under the boards, bench scoring will be key. In their last game against the Bucks, Portland only got 9 points off of their bench. In fact, the first made field goal coming from the reserves came in the fourth quarter. All together the second unit shot just two for 29 from the field! No, you didn't read that wrong...out of 29 attempts, only TWO hit bottom of the net. That has to change. Not only for Thursday but for the remainder of the season. Great bench play is what won the game in Chicago and going forward is what will be the catalyst for this team. It starts with Jamal, and he even said as much, but also trickles down to Luke and Nolan who the team needs to score and look for their own shot.

I hope Memphis doesn't wear those ugly yellow and green throwback jerseys. Those things look more like old Roller Derby jerseys, then they do old school NBA jerseys.

Will be on hand for this one and be looking for effort at the defensive end.  Communication, rotation, close outs, denial...but mostly, just simply PRIDE.  Would love to actually still be in the RG at the final horn, but am somewhat doubtful.  My time is valuable and I'm not into wasting it.  Newly acquired Hickson would be helpful against this formidable Memphis front-line if available.  PRIDE fellas.  Win or lose, just bring it!

I always want the Blazers to win. Not a fan of tanking the season for the lottery. With the salary cap we have going into summer the draft is a small part of what we can accomplish compared to development of our young guys and hopefully bring in a t op tier point guard as well. Elliot Williams is a star in the making if he can stay healthy and LaMarcus needs to change from a jump shooter to a banger. JJ HIckson was a great pickup for our bench. If Chad were smart, he'd bring in Olajuwan in the off season to work with Thabeet. Young and 7'3 with very little actual playing time in his career he could become a rebounding machine. I hope the Blazers make the playoffs on the fly and bring it every game. Go blazers!

Rob Simonson from Portland Roundball Society said "more losses equates to a better draft."  Gotta say that I'm on board with the rebuild and would rather lose than win at this point...this season.  What I would like to see tonight however:

1 rebound per minute played by Thabeet
Nolan Smith to get 15+ mins.
Batum shooting over 50% with more than 10 pts

The Blazers have gotten the fan base to return after the bad years, by bringing in good young men with good moral standing. I am always a fan of winning, no matter where they are in the standings. Tanking games to try and improve in the draft is not ethical, and how many time have teams done that to be shot in the foot when the lottery picks are announced. Win or lose, I prefer a hard fought game which has great entertainment value.

The only people thinking of tanking the season are the media and some fans. No professional athlete who makes it to the NBA thinks that way, and certainly none that would be on the Portland Trailblazers (only exceptions I can think of are all ego maniacs, like Melo). Flyroy said it, this team is built on the idea that our players stand up. Especially with a new coach, who the players all openly endorse (some even past this season), who is all about energy, effort, and commitment, you will NOT see a single game tanked this season.

Ok, done with that. On a much more positive (and FAN-based) note, I read this OregonLive article about the Hickson pickup, and there was something on the end of it that I liked even more than hearing we grabbed a nice pf/c to audition for a longterm spot on our roster...

"...when asked following Wednesday's practice what makes him believe performances like Tuesday night -- when the Blazers lost to the Bucks 116-87 -- will not be the norm, Aldridge said he wouldn't allow it.
"I'm not going to live with it," he said. "Last night, I started talking to guys and yelling a little bit. I'm not going to sit on the bench and just let guys just not play defense (while) I'm trying my best. I'm not going to live with it. I'm going to start calling guys out myself. I started doing it last night. ... I think guys got the message."

Now THAT is freakin NEWS. We need an article on THAT to not only reassure the fans, but to enforce LaMarcus' position and make it public so other players will have to hold themselves even more accountable. Seriously, we need someone to do an interview with LaMarcus and get him talking about that!!! Give him the confidence to back up his words and put this team on his back (again)!

Plus, there's always the hope that Aldridge becoming more of a verbal banger will help him transition into more of a physical banger. (We all love the touch on your jumpshot LaMarcus, but it's not ever going to be your primary weapon as a star PF. Time to grow up and play hard)

LAMARCUS, THIS IS YOUR TEAM BRO. GET 'EM IN LINE! GO BLAZERS!

Tanking games is unacceptable. It cheapens the game. Thats the equivalent of throwing a fight,or a quarterback shaving points. Its dispicable and un American. We play too win. Lottery position be damned.

Nic, Wesley, Ray, and LaMarcus all show up with pretty big contributions! 4th quarter execution, solid guard play... just nothing like the Blazers we saw most of this season. I like what I'm seeing. I'm starting to believe this "retooling rather than rebuilding" sentiment. Maybe it won't take the major blow-up many of us expected.

Pretty much my only complaint tonight is that they didn't make good on the promise to play JJ Hickson.

    Post-Game Quotes:
Coach Kaleb Canales on tonight's defense-

“I thought we were active. I thought we played with speed. We didn’t give up a 30 point quarter. Those are goals we talked about and we came out and we executed tonight.”
Nicolas Batum on whether it was offense or defense tonight-

“Defense. Defense was the biggest part tonight. They scored 90 points – after the 116 we gave two days ago, we did a better job than that. They scored 46 points I think in the first half, so our goal was to allow no more than 25 points each quarter. We did a pretty good job in the first half. Then we kept rebounding – this is a big team. They’ve got Z-Bo and Marc inside and we tried to control the rebounds, did a pretty good job. Sometimes we gave up too many offensive rebounds, but the whole game was pretty good. Everybody was involved – everybody who came on the court was ready to go so that was a good team win tonight.”

Jamal Crawford on team shooting 25-25 from the free throw line-

“Are you serious? Wow. Coach, he emphasized that today. We shot free throws for a bunch of time, just going around to different baskets shooting free throws. They win games and tonight they were key for us.”

I picked Wes although it was a toss up between him and Felton. If Felton can get those assists up he might turn into something we might want. Wes has put together 3 games in a row where he is actually shooting over 50%. I think this is important for him to continue this over the games we have left. This should be considered an off night for Lamarcus. This is something we should see from Batum on a regular basis if he wants to see the money not once every ten games or so. That being said we played like a team tonight and good things happened. It would be real nice to take this win,Attitude into Lakerland and treat them to the worst part of the rosebush.

When Babbitt hit that buzzer beater 3 to end the 1st quarter, the Grizzlies might as well've just packed up and head for the bus. You knew, this was a Blazer night INDEED!

Had control of this game until the third when I felt Canales left Ray on the floor too long.  Felton and LaMarcus were not on the same page last night.  Notice that when Felton has a "good" game, LA doesn't.  One of the worst facilitators I've seen in recent memory in a Blazer uniform.  Reminds me a bit of Bayless running the point.  Felton's assists last night came primarily off made 3's and long jumpers.  That said, 0 TOs was nice.  Not going to beat too many quality opponents with LA going for 16 and 5, and were fortunate to catch Memphis in an identity crisis.  In that third period when the Griz jumped out in front, Felton repeatedly was putting on his dribbling exhibition and burning away the shot clock, forcing an ill advised long and contested jumper at the buzzer, some from LA.  Liked what I saw from both Smith and Flynn.  Outside of a defensive mistake, Flynn had some very positive minutes and I saw enough to merit seeing more.

Bottom line...saw PRIDE last night.  Thank you!  Home court was home court again, with Joel, Thomas, and even Nolan Smith sending messages in the paint.  Good, clean hard fouls is something Blazer teams have never understood, even in the Drexler era.  And-ones via wrist slapping took months off the end of my life during that era, Finals v the Pistons in particular.  Win or lose, I was happy in my seat last night until the final horn.  Thank you!
