Alright so everyone knows we're supposedly courting Turkoglu. I personally think this would be a horrible idea and would just like to point out a couple things here that might open some people's eyes to some things. 1st, Turkoglu is only effective with the ball in his hands. If Hedo doesn't have the ball in his hands, he basically disappears. Don't we already have a guy (I think his name's somethin like Roy or somethin like that) that needs the ball in his hands in the crunch. So if that's the case, what's the point of having Turkoglu if he's not going to control the ball, especially when he's not effective at spot up shooting. What, would we take him out in the last 2 minutes? That would be ridiculous if we're going to pay him a grip of cash to take him out in the crunch. 2nd, the guy only shot 38% for 2-pt shots and 35% for 3-pt shots. How does that help us? A guy who needs to control the ball but doesn't shoot very well. The only place he was truly effective was inside. If I'm not mistaken we have 2 really big guys already that can get down there, score, and kinda clog up the lane enough. We don't need to clog up the middle with a 6'10" slow forward that doesn't rebound exceptionally well (you thought Travis doesn't rebound, HA Travis has way higher rebound rates than Hedo). 3rd, aren't we supposedly building a team that will play defense? If you've ever watched Turkoglu play, he gives more Ole's that Sergio did. He has a -4 defensive rating (he allows 104 points per 100 possessions). That's allowing the guy you defend to shoot 52%. That's HORRIBLE defense. Also if you look at his offensive and defensive efficiencies, you'll notice he's great on offense, but crappy on defense. Once again, didn't we trade Sergio cause he didn't play defense. Isn't everyone giving Outlaw crap because he only plays defense half the time? Wasn't that one of our big problems was defense. We had one of the most efficient offenses in the league, maybe focusing on defense would help. 4th, and this is the one that kills me (mainly because I've been one of the biggest advocates for trading Travis, but only when it's a good deal), Travis Outlaw has a better player efficiency rating than Turkoglu. Now I know that's not the be all end all of stats, but it is a very good measure of a player overall. The fact that Travis, a guy who's 6 years younger than Turkoglu, already has a higher PER than Turkoglu did in his first 6 seasons in the league, doesn't that say something about Travis. Or should I say, doesn't that say something about Turkoglu? Just a couple thoughts I wanted to throw out there because I am NOT at all on the Turkoglu bandwagon. He's had 2 good years in his whole career (last year and this year) and that's about it. Why take a stupid chance on a guy who will not only take the ball out of Brandon's hands, but won't really sure up anything we're missing. We need a banger backup PF that can get in there and rebound and help around the basket taking care of the dirty work. Is that Jeff Pendergraph or Dante Cunningham? I don't know I guess we'll have to see, but I know it's not Turkoglu. I would much prefer to see this team upgrade a position that is vital to upgrade. We already have VERY servicable SFs in Travis and Martell (when he's healthy, God I hope it's soon.) and an up-and-coming SF in Batum. Where does Hedo fit? Why not go upgrade something we don't already have stacked like PG? Everyone's saying we can't win with Blake, what about an upgrade at PG?Or back PF? I don't know if I'm the only one thinking we are about to take 3 steps back after taking 2 forward if we sign Turkoglu, but I don't see a situation in which Turkoglu gels and meshes well with this team. His skill set steps on the toes of TOO many people on this team and he's not SO good that he can change the whole way a team plays and substitutes. What do you guys think? Am I alone on this or what?
I am a fan of this team. Here's to hoping for a healthy season!!!

Dang... you wrote a novel! You really got your point across but this could have been a blog as well. If you made it a blog you would have gotten 100 fan points for all of this hard work. I disagree with what you said about T-Glue. He will provide matchup problems for opposing teams and is an EXCELLENT SHOOTER.
I am a fan of WHY THE HECK HAVE WE NOT EXTENDED BRANDON ROY'S CONTRACT???

I agree with a lot of what you said and i dont really understand why we are working so hard to get ANOTHER SF. Of all positions thats probably the last one we need to go after, with Webster returning and looking to prove hes for real and Batum having a great rookie year and probably the SF of the future as many have said.. it just sorta leaves me scratching my head. Not saying that Hedo isnt a good player its just think that if we did get him then whats gonna happen to the other guys? someone is gonna be left out.(I know i didnt mention Outlaw but im just not sure whats gonna happen with him right now. Not a Travis hater though)

Originally i thought we would be after a Vet PG even though i actually do like blake and think hes a good player.. now im not sure. Assuming we get Hedo which would eat up all our cap space, we would have to do a Sign and trade which would most likely involve Blake or Outlaw if not both. Right now im just unsure of whats gonna happen but i hope its all for the better, i trust KP and Nate have a plan and know what they are doing.

I don't agree with it either. Hedo will ceate alot of matchup problems and they will be less likly to double team one of our players like Roy.
I am a fan of Batum's effort of trying to dunk on Pau Gasol all the time.

I have been giving this a lot of thought, and at first I was against this pursuit of Hedo. Then when I heard that we might lose Rudy over it I was really questioning it. Two things have come into play since then. 1) Blazers have said that Rudy has NEVER expressed anything other than being excited to get back and play with this team. 2) There was an article on Blazers Edge that made a really good point. Now I didn't personally read it, buy my older brother told me about it.  The article said something about the fact that we need to stop thinking we know as much as KP and Nate. On Draft Day we ALL got Pritchslapped with the Victor Claver pick. We all were looking a certain direction and BAM! Ofcoarse, he is the PERFECT fit for Portland. By the time Bayless is ready to take over that starting PG position, Claver will be ready to come over from Europe. His money doesn't take away from our Free Agency money. The guy is a complete stud on the floor and will make a huge impact when he is ready to play in the BA. So the point being, we should TRUST Nate and  KP on this one because they OBVIOUSLY know more about what's going on. I now trust KP to make the right decisions for the team.

Thats sorta how i feel right now, if they are going after Hedo then they obviously have a plan and know what they are doing. Same with the Claver pick on draft night, ill admit at first i was like "wtf.. who is this guy?" but then after i thought about it more and other people were talking about it i realized "i guess that wasnt so bad afterall" and that it was the best move by far.
I have faith everything is gonna workout fine and this team will be better than ever come the start of next season. Like every fan i have my idea of what i want and dont want but then again im not KP or Nate so what i want or dont want doesnt really matter lol. So you learn to go with the flow and try to be happy with any outcome, instead of upset or angry about not getting everything you wanted.

I see what you're saying here, but IF Claver does come over in 2 years, and that's the time Bayless is ready to take over (all in theory here, supposing everything goes perfectly), where would that put, a) Hedo, b) Batum, c) Martell, and d) Claver. Specifically, that would be the 3rd year of Hedo's new deal we'd be giving him. If we're going to be bringing Claver over that year, and if Nicolas is the next coming of Scottie Pippen like everyone's claiming, where's everyone going to get minutes? That doesn't even factor in our biggest X factor I think; Martell Webster. What if he comes back and is a beast? Then you have 3 or 4 SFs that will want not only minutes but money.

Personally I just think they needed to go after maybe a Brandon Bass type player, a banger backup for LaMarcus. Maybe even bring over Joel Freeland (heard he did some good things this past year) to back up LMA. I understand we have cap room and it would be stupid to waste it, but I think it's too soon to start filling holes when we have so many questions still about this team. We're putting a patch in a place where we need to let the foundation settle a little first, see what we got, then put our patches in so the foundation doesn't settle out below it. I think the best thing for this team would be a little time, but I don't know if this city can handle that anymore. They seem so rabid for immediate results KP's timeline has been thrown out the window.

I hope whatever we do works well for us. I'm just not too confident currently on any of the situations.

As a new Blazer fan, didnt start following them till this year, it was obvious that our SF position was a weak spot. I was never impressed with Batum...I mean I know he's young and still getting accustomed to the daily life of an NBA player, but he never contributed on the offensive end. It was basically like we were playing 4 on 5 when he's in and we have the ball. Webster just doesnt seem like he will ever be a star to me...he quite frankly reminds me of a younger Outlaw, which I think we can all agree we dont need another of =). Hedo will bring a great new feel to this team. He's a seasoned vet who can stroke it, dribbles very well for his size, and has great court vision as you can tell by his assist #'s. Like I said on another thread, at 6'10" he will create many mismatches that will work in our favor while also taking much pressure off of B-Roy and LA. Another great thing about Hedo is that he wants to take the big shot. He hit so many game winners last year which shows that he is productive in the clutch...I would rather have Hedo taking that shot than Outlaw as would any reasonable fan. I do still think that we need a point guard however, but Im excited about Hedo...he will be a great player in Portland. A player that will ultimately help us keep up with the Lakers. Good signing in my opinion KP.

Hopefully this should answer some of your questions. In two years, IF everything works as planned, Claver will come over as a slightly undersized PF NOT a SF. Batum should be coming into his own and IF Martel is a beast he will have earned the starting SF role. In which case Hedo becomes trade bait. He will have become the Portland version of Robert Horry, an undersized PF that can hit the Big 3. Teams like Cleveland will be drooling for a guy like that. What KP is seeing is that the door window is getting smaller for the Blazers. He is unsure of the longevity of B-Roy and Oden based on health issues. He wants to take advantage of the talent he has while it is here. As far as right now, Martel can play some minutes at the 2 as well as primary back up 3. Rudy will play primary back up 2 and some time at the point as can Roy, and Hedo. You are going to see some very creative lineups this year that will be VERY hard to defend. Will there be some discontent with roles? Yes, and hopefully the idea of a championship ring and playing with friends can out weigh that temporarily. Hedo is a temporary fix for a temporary problem, a band-aid on a scratch. Was it a little overkill? Maybe, it is almost like washing the scratch with sterilized water, packing it with antibiotics, stitching it, and wrapping it with sterile gauze. But if it gets us a ring or two now while our players develop into the players that could possibly bring us a ring or two more, can live with the growing pains. I hope that Nate has enough influence to control what minor discontent there may be.
