    Beginning his fourth season with the Trail Blazers following a solid performance the year before, Kersey had one conspicuous obstacle standing in his path to stardom: Kiki Vandeweghe.

    Vandeweghe’s nagging back problems (Kiki played only 37 games that season) gave the 6-foot-7 athletic Kersey the opportunity he needed to show Coach Mike Schuler her was ready to take his place among the game’s top small forwards.

    Then Kersey took matters into his own hands two nights later (Feb. 12) in a game at the Memorial Coliseum against the Denver Nuggets.

    Kersey scored 34 points (two points shy of his all-time high) and snared a career-best 20 rebounds to lead the Blazers to a convincing 120-106 win over the Nuggets.

    “I remember that game very well,” Kersey said recently. “I felt a lot of pressure with Kiki coming back to claim his spot, but everything worked for me that night. I was beating Denver down the court on fast breaks; I was hitting just about every jump shot I took. The basket looked like the size of a bathtub. It was just one of those nights when you get into a zone and everything goes your way.”

    “Jerome was so aggressive. He was good all night,” Schuler said. Asked again if Kersey had solidified his hold on the small forward position Schuler answered with a wink: “We need his energy. That’s pretty obvious isn’t it?”

    Winning the starting small forward spot from the likes of Kiki Vandeweghe was no easy task. But given the opportunity Jerome Kersey didn’t think twice. He hit the floor and flat out balled his way into the lineup. Thompson’s depiction of Kersey’s electrifying game is a snapshot of not just one night, but of a mentality. Kersey was the man you could count on to give every bit of himself during every matchup. If a scorer was needed, Kersey was your guy. Rebounds you ask? Kersey was there. But most importantly, Kersey was reliable. He’s played the most games in a Trail Blazers uniform second only to Clyde Drexler. Night in and night out Kersey was there to give it his all.

    Stepping onto the court behind the injured Vandeweghe was the moment Jerome Kersey needed to prove himself. And prove himself he did. Trail Blazers fans of the early-90s know he was an integral piece of the breakout team alongside other greats Drexler, Terry Porter and Buck Williams. A team so memorable many of it’s players are battling for the title of Greatest Trail Blazer.

    The former Minnesota star, wearing jewelry around his neck (actually he wore three strands of beads that he claimed had some spiritual value from his native Nassau in the Bahamas), scored a career-high 37 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to lead the Blazers to a 115-112 victory over the Kings.

    “If Mychal hadn’t taken over in the low post, we’d still be looking for our first win,” Ramsay said.

    The Blazers struggled early in this game to get their offense in gear, trailing 55-43 in the second quarter. That’s when the 6-foot-10 Thompson took over. He scored nine consecutive points to cut the Kings’ lead at halftime to 55-52.

    The Kings were impressed, too, with the Trail Blazer rookie. “You don’t usually get that kind of poise, temperament, and command from a rookie just coming into this league,” said Kansas City coach Cotton Fitzsimmons, to The Oregonian’s Paul Buker.

    “Thompson had the hot hand,” Hillman said in an understatement (Mychal connected on 13 of 20 floor shots and 11 of 14 free throws.) “They went to him. It was as simple as that.”

    Thompson admitted he wanted the ball with the game on the line. “I’ve never lacked confidence,” he said. “I’m not the bragging type, but I feel there isn’t a man in this league who I can’t beat.”

    Being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft is a huge deal and undoubtedly comes loaded with a large burden of pressure. Such was the case of Mychal Thompson. Drafted by the Trail Blazers in 1978, expectations were high as the team was still just one season removed from the Championship run of 1977. With tension thick in the air it was Thompson and his crew of rookies who came in and gave Trail Blazers fans something to cheer about.

    Wayne Thompson’s detailing of Mychal Thompson’s initial games as a Trail Blazer signify the changing of the guard. The time when a No. 1 draft pick saved the day and helped a team transition into a new era. Thompson’s eight seasons in Portland were clutch in keeping the franchise relevant after the departure of Bill Walton. And though he may not have been in the spotlight as countless No. 1 draft picks are, he carried the load on his shoulders with ease as the Trail Blazers pushed forward. To say Thompson’s contributions were underrated would be doing him a disservice. His contributions were invaluable.

    I had to vote for Jerome. As a huge Jerome fan, I didn't realize it took an injury for Kiki to get his start with the Blazers. If Kiki never injures his back, does Jerome become the Mercy Man we know to this day? Does he get upset and we trade him? But, as they say, everything happens for a reason. But the fact that he knew this was his chance and he completely balled out, shows just what kind of player and competitor Jerome is. No one was going to take that spot back from him!

    another close and tough vote..had to vote for Mychal..when we drafted him, there was a lot of excitement with that pick, and he was a stud player for years..his stats definitely are better the Jerome's..and we forget Mychal was the #1 option on the team, til we got Paxson..He was also more respected off the court then Jerome..(lest we forget Jerome's mishaps in Utah, off the court)..

    I think Mychal was a more pivotal player in his time and more key to the Blazers as a unit.

    Kersey, hands down. I swear he never stopped hustling. He was like the Energizer Bunny, always on the go. He never quit on plays and really, he fit in perfectly with that core during the 90's. What some people forget is how many points Kersey used to put up on a nightly basis. He averaged over 16 points three times from 88-90.

    Both great athletes and dunkers but I can't vote against Jerome Kersey. Think of all the great small forwards he had to guard for us during those title runs: Larry Bird, Chris Mullin, Dan Marjerle, Scottie Pippen, James Worthy, Dominique Wilkins, Sean Elliot. Without Jerome constantly moving around on offense and harassing them on defense, maybe we don't get to 2 Finals in 3 years?

    Kersey was part of a team which reached the finals twice. Thompson, while his stats show him as a very good player, really didn't have team success. went with Kersey here.
