SLAM believes Dwight Howard's best chances at winning a title are with him choosing to go West. They list out five teams in the Western Conference (LA, OKC, San Antonio, Houston, Portland) which would suit him better  than Orlando and give reasons why it will and why it won't happen.

We don't have the cap room to sign him in the summer of 2012, and it seems the most likely scenario would be a trade deadline move ala Melo to NY. Do we have the pieces to make a trade of this magnitude come to fruition? Would he sign here long-term? Anyways, give it a read below. Regardless of whether or not the player actually comes here, I just like hearing my team mentioned. It was just like when CP3 listed us as one of his five teams he would welcome a trade to. Although it never happened, just being mentioned is a step in the right direction.

    Via SLAM-
    Why it will happen:

Somehow nobody talks about Portland even though they possess an insane amount of talent. Adding Howard to a starting line-up that is one of the most physical in the game would be brutal for other teams in the West. Howard and LaMarcus Aldridge would become the best front court duo in basketball. Paired with Wesley Mathews or Brandon Roy at shooting guard, Gerald Wallace at small forward and veteran Andre Miller holding down the point, Howard would help Blazers fans, who are some of the best in the NBA, forget about the days of the Jail Blazers, and the more recent tragedy of Greg Oden.

That's a pretty sick starting five for sure. Quite brutal in fact...we would take care of the paint and would perhaps end up with the best rebounding team in the league. Drooool : )

Of course it's a good fit. Dwight Howard + any franchise = good fit. He's the best center in the league by a mile and he's one of the only few remaining centers left.  After fooling around for a minute on the trade machine at ESPN, I came up with a deal that *might* entice Orlando.

    Orlando/Portland Trade
Portland In- Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu
Orlando In- Marucs Camby, Andre Miller, Nicolas Batum (ouch), Rudy Fernandez, Luke Babbitt

We could also throw in future 1st round picks. This type of deal gives Orlando immediate salary cap flexibility losing the long-term deals of Hedo and Dwight and gaining back the expiring contracts of Dre & Uncle Cam. Rudy & Babbitt are fillers, although Orlando could ask for Wesley instead. And Batum is the centerpiece. I HATE HATE HATE including Nic but we do have Wallace and to get Dwight Howard, you just have to do it.

As much as I love Wesley, I'd even throw him into that deal if Orlando obliged. ANYTIME you have a chance to get a Top 5 player in the league, you do it. Just think about the Aldridge/Howard/Wallace frontline? We would still have the draft and MLE to fill in the holes.

only way i would consider trading batum would be for horward. camby would probably retire if traded, if we move miller we would be screwed at point, i believe in stacks but i dont think he's ready to be in charge for 38minutes a game. rudy's shot has been incositent but he's played decent defense and gives good filler minutes at the PG. if we lost him and miller all we would have is patty and armon. oh and portland doesnt want turk, maybe do a 3 way deal where we get a PG for turk

In order to get Dwight Howard, you have to give them what they want. And what are they complaining about even with HOward? Big guys. They would want Aldridge, Camby, and possibly Greg if he did well this season.  Theyre not going to give up their only center to possibly get Camby if he doesnt retire. And theyre not interested in guards (which we have many of) because they also have a lot of guards. Both of our teams want big centers and PF's. Wouldnt work unless other teams were involved

Personally, I'd give up anyone and anything outside of Aldridge for Howard. Do I think LA is better than Dwight? No. But I'd rather have LA & Dwight as an amazing two-man superstar duo than have Dwight + role players.

ESPN Trade Machine has Miller & Camby straight up for Howard meeting the NBA rules. I'd prefer to acquire Jameer Nelson & Howard, and us include Babbitt and Rudy to make the salaries work.

Reasons it would work: short term, Orlando frees up 3mil in cap room. After next year's season, Rudy, Miller & Camby come off the books, for an additional 20 million (not a typo, twenty million) off the books. Or they could trade Miller OR Camby for some help. With them getting J. Rich off the books this summer, Rudy and Q. Richardson and JJ Redick as shooting guards makes a good group (and WAY cheaper) - they can use the J. Rich money for another big guy so they'd really get Camby + another big. This might screw them at PG except that Arenas can "play" the point as well as he "plays" shooting guard (and they have Chris Duhon and Rudy for backup minutes), and they will have enough cap room with this trade to make a run at CP3 or Deron Williams.

Reasons it works for us: Obviously, Howard would be amazing to acquire. It cements our frontline, allows LA to be inside or outside as he wishes, and the 3-4-5 positions are stellar (Wallace/Batum, Aldridge, Howard). You get a backup like a Jeff Pendergraph resigning, hold on to Chris Johnson (both for dirt cheap), and extend the qualifying offer to Greg Oden but don't rely on him for more than backup minutes for now, and you've got the front line locked up. Meanwhile, Jameer Nelson is only slightly more expensive (600k/year) than Miller, and only locks you in one more year than Miller did. It screws over our 2012 flexibility, but we'd have this depth chart for next year:

1 - Jameer Nelson, Patty Mills (maybe), Armon Johnson
2 - Brandon Roy, Wesley Matthews, Elliot Williams
3 - Gerald Wallace, Nicolas Batum
4 - LaMarcus Aldridge, Jeff Pendergraph, Chris Johnson
5 - Dwight Howard, Greg Oden (maybe)
2 open roster spots, plus possibly another if we didn't keep Oden or Mills (whose contract is up this summer). Furthermore, Camby might try and get a buyout in Orlando, and we could resign him 30 days later as long as we didn't plan that out (that'd be illegal, I'm just mentioning it to illustrate there are possibilities out there). Those 2 spots would go to our draft picks (we still have both) or to a cheap backup PG or 7 footer. Personally, I think we should spend our next few drafts just picking 1s ad 5s until we have those spots figured out, but that's another story. Anyway, if we do this trade, we've got at least a Finals berth next year. Year after that, we'd have to figure out how to manage it when Batum & Williams' contracts are up, and possibly Gerald Wallace's contract too. But that's not a huge deal, we'd hold on to at least one of the SFs and Williams may or may not be relevant to us by then. But after that we'd still have one more year of Nelson & Howard, and we'd obviously max out Howard when the time came. :)

It would be a big trouble if there is no shooter in this team. Take a look at Mavs (Peja, JKidd, JJ, Jet...), you would know the importance of shooters for a team...I would rather put JJ or JRich or Turk in the package with Orlando.

to be honest The magic should of won at least two championships by now. because if they could of won one, then they might of won a second.
but during 2007 - 2009 or 08-10, they led just about if not all statistical team catagories.

now with Areneas and Jay Rich, they should be good to go, and Hedo who statistically sucks unless he is on Orlando, they should of been jammin this season.
but idk. Howard coming to portland doesnt solve some of the bigger problem this team faces.
PG issues, SG issue's , veteran ship in those positions, health too....

and if this team just paid for oden, what good is howard going to do?
having both of them is not going to really do any good....

We would have those three players, but who else would be left? We'd be out in the first round again. It takes depth to win in this league anymore, and if it's just those three guys doing all the work, I don't see them making it very far.

Just look at the Lakers; Bynum, Gasol, and Kobe (out in the 1st round). Or New York with Stoudemire and Carmello? Even the Heat have struggled with their "big 3" this season, and they've got 2 of the top 5 players in the entire NBA.

While the Knicks and Heat lack depth, unfortunately that should only be a one or two year thing. With teams still able to sign free agents to the mid-level exception and through the draft, I don't see either of those teams struggling to acquire depth any time soon.

people are a little unrealistic, why would a super start that loves where he is playing go to even a smaller city, even then why would orlando trade howard for a bunch of weak stuff, the trade would include oden, it would include the expiring contract of miller, it would include fernandez, it would include either mathews or babtuum, it would include roy, enough stuff to make a playoff team, we may have to throw in a draft pick and chris johnson
