    Magic Number: 0

With only 2 games to play, each game's impact is magnified in the playoff standings, not only just the Trail Blazers games but for every team vying for a playoff spot out West. This thread will be where the playoff standings will be updated daily, how the tie-breakers will work out against various teams, and to keep track of our opponents' schedule as well.

    Standings (via NBA.com) (Updated April 13th, 2011)-

    Tiebreaker Scenarios

    Tiebreakers-

    Portland owns tiebreakers over:
    Memphis (2-1 season series)
Denver (2-2 season series, Portland has 10-6 divisional record to Denver's 8-6)
    Phoenix (3-1 season series)
    Utah (3-1 season series)
    Houston (2-1 season series)

    Portland loses tiebreakers to:
    Oklahoma City (1-3 season series)
    New Orleans (1-3 season series)

Schedule Difficulty (Updated April 13th, 2011)-

    #2 Dallas:              1 Games Remaining Against +.500 Teams (1H/0A),   0 Games Remaining Against Teams -.500 (0H/0A)
    #3 Los Angeles:     0 Games Remaining Against +.500 Teams (0H/0A),   1 Games Remaining Against Teams -.500 (0H/1A)
    #4 Oklahoma City: 0 Games Remaining Against +.500 Teams (0H/0A),   1 Games Remaining Against Teams -.500 (1H/0A)

    #6 Portland:          0 Games Remaining Against +.500 Teams (0H/0A),   1 Games Remaining Against Teams -.500 (0H/1A)
    #7 Memphis:         1 Games Remaining Against +.500 Teams (0H/1A),   1 Games Remaining Against Teams -.500 (0H/1A)
    #8 New Orleans:    1 Games Remaining Against +.500 Teams (0H/1A),   0 Games Remaining Against Teams -.500 (0H/0A)

And if the playoffs started today (April 13th, 2011)-

    #2 Seed Scenario-

    Lakers Record: 56-25
    Remaining Schedule: @ Sacramento

    Mavericks Record: 56-25
    Remaining Schedule: vs. New Orleans

    Thunder Record: 55-26
    Remaining Schedule: vs. Bucks

The Lakers are tied in the loss column with Dallas and own a one  game lead over the Thunder with one game remaining. They own the tiebreaker over Dallas by virtue of being a division winner and over Oklahoma City by winning two of the three games of the season series.

For Dallas to obtain the #2 seed, they would have to beat New Orleans and have the Lakers lose against the Kings.

Oklahoma City can no longer claim the #2 seed. For them to obtain the #3 seed, Dallas must lose to New Orleans and they must beat Milwaukee.

Why does this matter to Portland?
Although the Blazers can not go any higher than 6th out West, they can finish in one of three seeds (6,7, or 8). Right now we are gunning for 6th to secure a favorable matchup with the Mavericks. But if they get #2, most likely #3 will go to the Lakers, making it a 3-6 matchup between Portland and L.A.

Also, the Thunder could catch Dallas for the #3 seed as they are only one game behind Dallas and would have the tiebreaker based upon being a division winner. Again, we could end up in 6th, but not see Dallas on the other side, rather it would be against the Thunder.

    Trail Blazers Playoff Scenarios-

The Trail Blazers will be the Sixth Seed out West
Wednesday March 9th, 2011 Games To Watch (Games updated throughout comments)-

    Oklahoma City @ Philadelphia
    Root For: The 76ers
It's a longshot to catch OKC with their easy schedule down the stretch, but we have two games left against them and anything can happen if they go on a small losing skid.

    Utah @ Toronto
    Root For: The Raptors.
While Utah may not seem like a distinct threat right now, I still have learned to never count them out.

    Memphis vs. New York
    Root For: The Knicks
Memphis is playing some serious ball right now and are only trailing us by 2 games in the loss column. They just beat the Mavs in Dallas and the Thunder at home. With the way their schedule set up down the stretch, the Grizzlies are a team we need to be rooting for to lose.

    New Orleans vs. Dallas
    Root For: New Orleans
Why? First, we traded away New Orleans' 1st round pick to Charlotte, so I hope that doesn't turn out to be too sweet of a pick for the 'Cats. Also, I really am not worried about the Bugs catching us and I would love a 1st round matchup with Dallas. I don't see us falling down to 7th (which is what it would take to play Dallas right now as they are the 2nd seed), but we could end up 6th and play them as the 3rd seed if they lose games like tonight and the Lakers pass them.

We have 10 home games - and with the home fans behind them we can do it! 8 away games - so far so good with those as well - LaMarcus is doing great getting thru the double teams etc - and Wallace has gotten familiar with our play and has become the player we all knew and anticipated for our team. Great win in Orlando and Miami - we have our confidence up and just need to keep our head in the game and we can achieve anything! :) Goooo Blazers!!!!!

Well, here's the difference.  We're elite, and those teams aren't.  Go Dallas btw, I want NOH to lose more, and I'm aiming at 5th seed against OKC.  Or 4th.  And we're going to beat them.

I agree with LAS.  If you saw the Thunder vs Phoenix game you'd understand that they get heavy ref support.  I know you're not a fan of people venting about that, but you must be seriously blind if you don't think OKC gets a lot of ref help.  They shot like 50 FTs against Phoenix, who shot like 14.  Also the game earlier against Portland in the final minute.

Playoff hungry Durant and Westbrook eh?  Sounds intimidating.  I think I'd be more scared of a hungry LMA, Marcus Camby, Andre Miller (who hasn't gotten past the 1st round), and Brandon Roy.  Not to mention Wesley Mathews, who was angry that the Lakers beat/swept the Jazz.  Heck, who knows.  Perkins might not even play.  Hasn't he only played like 12 games this season?  I'm more worried about the second round than I am the Thunder.

Give me the Thunder. I want our Blazers to squash all that hype on the Thunder and go on to face the Lakers in the second round. Either way this is going to be some exciting playoff basketball coming from these Portland Trail Blazers. If we keep building on what we've improved on, and if what they say is true that the team is buying into the whole sacrifice me for WE then I'm thinking maybe we can make a lot of noise this year.

I think that if we meet with the Thunder in the first round, we might have a better chance of making it to the second round than if we were to play Dallas. We have never really played good to Dallas. I think getting through Dallas will be really tough considering the history, not to knock the Thunder at all. The Thunder are an awesome team. It will be a tough match no matter which team it is. But I am confident in the Blazers. They are playing great, smart ball and playing like a comfortable team. I'm excited for the future.

Wednesday March 10th, 2001 Games To Watch-

    Los Angeles Lakers @ Miami
    Root For: Your Choice
It's a win-win! While  this game doesn't impact the playoff standings, it will be a can't miss contest. I have no problem with either team winning. If LA wins, Miami continues to implode which is fine by me and if Miami wins, the Lakers lost, which always makes my heart smile.

    Dallas vs. New York
    Root For: The Knicks
The Knicks delivered for us last night by knocking off the Grizzlies, now can they do it again? I'd still love to face Dallas in a 3-6 matchup and if LA wins tonight and Dallas loses, that scenario would be in place.

    Denver @ Phoenix
    Root For: Your Choice
Again, another win-win for Trail Blazers fans. If  you want to inch closer to the 5th seed for a potential matchup against the Thunder, root for Phoenix to protect their home court. But if you'd rather face Dallas in a 3-6 matchup, pull for Denver. A Denver win also pushes Phoenix down a notch as they are only 2 games behind us for a playoff spot.

Go Miami, Dallas, and Phoenix!  I don't want Dallas.  Why would you want Dallas?  Because they choke?  I'd rather see where the Blazers are at.  Also, if we get Dallas, we get LAL in the 2nd round.  I'd much rather have LAL in the WCF, because we play the Spurs very well.

I want Dallas because we have 3-4 defenders we can constantly throw at Dirk. besides Dirk, they don't have a "money" player. Terry is streaky, Kidd is really getting up there in age and Chandler is not an offensive threat. Slow down Barea and tire out Dirk and I think you're looking at a 1st round upset.

Dallas would be tough in whatever round....  We've already dropped both games to them this season and we won't have home court advantage. But then again, who won't be tough in the playoffs?  The west has some great talent even though a lot of it went east at the deadline and when it is playoff time every team tries to really bring it!

Friday March 11th, 2001 Games To Watch-

    Utah @ Minnesota
    Root For: The Timberwolves
Again, Utah may not seem like a threat now, they are still only 4 games back of us and all it takes is one team to get hot and for us to stub our toe. With that said, let's hope Minnesota can continue to push Utah further and further behind us.

    Detroit vs. Oklahoma City
    Root For: The Pistons
There is still hope to catch OKC for the Northwest Division crown so continue to pull for anyone playing OKC. While it's not likely Detroit pulls the upset, stranger things have happened.

Ugh, not much to choose from on a Friday night. I doubt we get much help, but as long as we take care of ourselves and continue to win the other factors will take care of themselves. We really needed Philly to close out that OKC game on Wednesday. It's games that like, that will be integral in us being able to chase them down for the NW title.

Also, how good is Denver now? I believe they've even been playing the last few without Gallo. Melo was so overrated it's ridiculous. It just goes to show you how a great "team" of players works better than one guy trying to do it all.

Absolutely agree.  It is far easier to defend one player than a collection of players capable of getting their own at any moment and who share the ball unselfishly.  Portland was in a great position to move into a tie with Denver for 5th with a win tonight over underdog Charlotte, but decided to mail it in.  May not be another opportunity like tonights to catch a Denver team playing as well as they are...particularly with the schedule Portland faces.  At the end of the season, tonights loss will be remembered.

At least Utah lost tonight, to an awful Minnesota team, which is a sign to me that they are out for the count. That means, there are 5 teams now vying for 4 spots. With the loss tonight, I can realistically start to think there isn't much chance to catch OKC.

I agree.  Catching OKC isn't any longer a realistic expectation.  The loss to Charlotte isn't the reason either.  It's WHY the Blazers lost to Charlotte that is extremely concerning.  First, the team as a whole didn't seem to even want to win that game (until the last minute or so, and by then ofcourse, it was too late).  Second, and perhaps most importantly, LA has again faded out of the picture regressing back to his former self.  As I've mentioned, without the inside play of LA offensively, this team again becomes the stagnant jumpshooting outside-in team we all saw before that infamous Dallas game.  THAT team with the remaining schedule as it is, may not even qualify for the playoffs, possibly sneaking in as an 8th seed by default without much of a challenger stepping up.  San Antonio would make quick work of a streaky and very inconsistent jumpshooting Blazers team.  You and I see this the same D.  Everything hinges on the play of LA...from here on out.

Tonight, the Blazers are in Atlanta facing a very tough Hawks team.  Atlanta dropped a tough game last night in Chicago and will also be playing in the second of a back-to-back.  Portland currently rests in 6th now, but only by 0.002 %pts over the Hornets who now own 7th.  Unfortunately for the Blazers, NO is at home tonight playing the Sacremento Kings.  If odds hold up, Portland will find themselves in 7th tonight, just over 26 hours from having an opportunity to be in a tie for 5th with Denver.  The Bobcat loss was HUGE and a missed opportunity...hopefully not the last.

The Mavs represent the most difficult match-ups for this current Blazer roster.  Too much depth, especially in the middle, with essentially TWO starting centers sharing minutes.  Bottom line...What once was an advantage Portland enjoyed, is now their achilles heal, length and size.  The Lakers also have that same length and size with Gasol, Bynum, and Odom.  The Blazers just simply can't match up with either of these two teams.  Honestly, I would prefer to face the Spurs in the first round.

Saturday March 12th, 2001 Games To Watch-

    Memphis @ Miami
    Root For: The Heat
Memphis is playing some serious ball right now and if they win tonight and win lose, they creep within 1 game of us in the loss column. Hopefully, Miami can do us a favor and knock them back. A Blazer win and Grizzly loss, puts 3 games of separation between us.

    Utah @ Chicago
    Root For: The Bulls
While the loss to Minnesota may have put any hopes of the playoffs to rest for Utah, let's hope Chicago can put the nail in the coffin. A Blazer win and Jazz loss put 5 games between the two teams in the loss column. But if Utah wins, it's not that bad, because  I don't want Utah to get to terrible and wind up with a great lottery pick.

    Sacramento vs. New Orleans
    Root For: The Kings
Again, it's a similar situation to that of Utah. We want them to lose but don't want their pick (the one we gave up for Crash) to end up being amazing. But since we only have a 1 game lead and no tiebreakers over the Hornets, let's hope Cousins and the Kings can upset the Hornets in their gym.

    Los Angeles Lakers @ Dallas
Root For: The Mavericks To Lose
I wouldn't root for the Lakers to win, but we could use a Dallas loss. Both teams are fighting back and forth for the 2 seed out West and I really think we are going to end up at #6, and I'd want Dallas in the 1st Round over LA.

Don't worry Bdawg, I saw LMA trying to go at it against the Cats, but it's really hard to post up when you're being double teamed.  THAT is when you need to knock down your jumpshots, which the Blazers had trouble doing.  If that's the case, LaMarcus has to settle for the outside shot.  His teammates need to make their shots for LaMarcus to get his, otherwise they'll double team him all night.

Heat are destroying Memphis right now.  Dallas will likely beat LAL (fine with me).  Utah just got blown out by the stat padding Wolves.  I'm pretty sure they can't beat Utah.

    Oklahoma City @ Cleveland
    Root For: The Cavaliers
Too bad, didn't happen. This was an EARLY game and OKC won 95-75. At this pace, they will clinch the division before April.

    Phoenix vs. Orlando
    Root For: The Magic
with the Suns only 1 game back of us in the loss column, we could desperately use some help from Orlando. The game is on ABC right now, so hopefully ORL works it down low to Dwight and gets hot from 3.

but a big thing for the magic is going to be the turnovers from the PG positions in nelson and arenas
and howard at center, that will make or break their playoff run, that and excessive 3's

Sunday March 14th, 2001 Games To Watch-

    Oklahoma City @ Washington
    Root For: The Wizards
While it's not realistic to catch OKC at this point (at least in my opinion), it'd still be nice to see them stumble a few times and not be hot going into the playoffs.

    Los Angeles Clippers vs. Memphis
    Root For: The Clippers
Memphis is right behind us for the 7th seed, only 2 back in the loss column. We've been lucky Memphis has stumbled these past few games but it'd be nice to get a little more breathing room. Hopeuflly the Blake Show is in full effect tonight.

    Denver @ New Orleans
    Root For: Toss-Up
This is the ultimate win-win for Portland. If Denver wins, Portland catapults up to 6th in teh West, but if NO holds serve at home, it brings Denver 1 game closer to us for the 5th seed.

    Phoenix @ Houston
    Root For: The Rockets
Thankfully Orlando took care of Phoenix on Sunday and now Phoenix has a chance to really fall behind the pack. A loss to Houston puts them 3 game in the loss column and they do NOT have the tiebreaker over Portland, essentially making it a 4 game lead should Houston win tonight.

    Utah vs, Philadelphia
    Root For: The Jazz
I do not see the Jazz as a threat to catch us. We have a 4 game cushion on them and I really don't want them to go into a losing funk and obtain a top 6-8 pick in the draft. Let the Jazz stay in mediocrity.

We're still 7th.  Percentage points behind.  Got to win tomorrow night and carry the momentum to the end of the season.

The Mavs are looking as likely a first round match-up for Portland as anyone now, adding even more weight to this game tonight.  The Blazers have added length and athleticism with the signing of Chris Johnson, something that may have been done with an eye on post-season match-ups.  Dallas is very deep in the middle.

Tuesday March 15th, 2001 Games To Watch-

    NONE

With only 4 games on tap tonight, only the Blazers can help or hurt their playoff chances. Luckily for us, Phoenix dropped their second in a row and fell to 10th behind Utah. Portland now has a full 3 game lead in the loss column on them PLUS the tiebreaker, essentially making it a 4 game lead.

Once again, Denver is playing amazing basketball, even doing so without Gallo. They handled the Hornets in NO quite easily. I'm starting to think we're not going to catch Denver, because we don't have another opportunity to play them again and I think by virtue of divisional record, they've got the tie-breaker. It's not that I don't think we're good enough to catch them, but our end of the season schedule is beyond brutal.

They got Orlando, Miami, and Atlanta.  There is a chance they COULD go on a 3 game losing streak.

Wednesday March 16th, 2011 Games To Watch-

    Denver @ Atlanta
    Root For: The Hawks
We're two back of Denver and we have a couple of cupcakes ahead on our schedule to finish out the week and Denver hits the road. Now is the time to start making up ground on the Nuggets.

    Oklahoma City @ Miami
    Root For: The Heat
We don't have much of a chance to catch OKC, but they are on fire right now and let's hope the Heat cool them off a bit. I also want OKC penciled into that 4th slot just in case we move up to 5th. That would be an exciting series.

    New Orleans vs. Phoenix
    Root For: The Suns
While either outcome is a positive for the Blazers, we have the 3 game cushion (plus tiebreaker) over the Suns and the Hornets are still right on our heels. I'd love to get that two-game cushion over them in the loss column as we want no part of the 7th seed.

    Utah vs. Minnesota
    Root For: The Jazz
With a four-game lead on Utah, I don't see them as a immediate threat to catch us. Rather, I hope they win the rest of the games they are supposed to, miss the playoffs by a hair and end up with a late lottery pick. The worst thing that could happen is Utah tanking it and going into the draft with two, high draft picks (they get New Jersey's as well).

    Dallas @ Golden State
    Root For: The Warriors
For a playoff matchup to occur between the Mavs and Blazers, we need Dallas to stay in that 3rd seed. They are chasing LA for #2 right now, so Golden State, playing Dallas on the 2nd half of a back to back, could help us out.

Wednesday March 17th, 2011 Games To Watch-

    Memphis @ New York
    Root For: The Knicks
This should be a hotly contested battle tonight as New York just won on a buzzer-beater less than a week ago in Memphis. A Knick win followed by a Trail Blazer victory over the Cavs puts a nice 3 game cushion in between us for the 8th seed.

Hate to say it but I predict Memphis winning against the Knicks.  Hope I'm wrong though

Friday March 18th, 2011 Games To Watch (Games updated throughout comments)-

    Denver @ Orlando
    Root For: The Magic
I still prefer a Mavericks matchup in the 1st round, but the Thunder would be my second choice. We are still two behind Denver so we need some help from ORL tonight to inch closer to that 5th seed.

    Charlotte vs. Oklahoma City
    Root For: The Bobcats
This is the first game of a six-game home-stand for the Thunder, all against bad teams except for us later on this month. Again, rooting against OKC has more to do with them going into the playoffs cold than catching them for the division.

    San Antonio vs. Dallas
    Root For: The Spurs
Could we get Dallas in a 2-7 matchup? Absolutely, but I see the Lakers taking control of the 2 seed sooner or later, so then we better hope to stay in 6th. For Dallas to end up in 3rd, we could use a Spur victory tonight.

    Houston vs. Boston
    Root For: The Celtics
I don't see Houston catching us, as they are 5 games behind us in the loss column, but there's still a lot of season left and the more teams that fall off of the map, the better.

    Phoenix vs. Golden State
    Root For: The Warriors
Well, GS let us down big time against Dallas and I don't see anything but the same result occurring tonight, but you never know. Just like the Houston scenario, Portland owns a big 4 games lead plus tiebreakers, but the sooner these pretenders falter, the better.

Not a bad night.  Not a great night but very glad Denver loss.  Them winning would have made me given up on the OKC first round matchup idea.
