    When should Brandon Roy return?
Friday, February 11th against Toronto (9)
     7%
Sunday, February 13th against Detroit (7)
     5%
    After the All-Star Break (85)
     65%
    Wait until early March (13)
     10%
    Sit the entire season (17)
     13%

Nearly an hour before Monday's contest against the Chicago Bulls, Jason Quick reported that Brandon Roy expected to return as early as Friday, the 11th against Toronto.  Roy even went as far as saying the return would be no later than the following game at Detroit:

“For sure against Detroit, and maybe for Toronto,’’ Roy said Monday. “I’m excited. I feel pretty good.’’

But our own RipCitySarah wrote that Coach McMillan doesn't envision Brandon playing as soon as he thinks.

Roy participated in pre-game warm-ups on Monday before the Trail Blazers victory over the Chicago Bulls. In an interview the same day Brandon said he was cleared for full-contact practice  the previous Friday. He feels he’ll be ready to roll after a few practices and anticipates being back on the court this weekend, but hadn’t spoken with McMillan about a timeline.
Finally, our sports reporter intern Shalamar Clark caught up with Brandon Roy at practice today, his first since having the surgery. Here's what Brandon had to say about the whole ordeal:

“[They] kind of reeled me back in a little bit,” said Roy. “They don’t want to put a day on when I’m going to come back. But my goal is to continue to try to get better and whenever [coach] is watching me, [I have to] try to show him that I’m close to being ready to play. He wants me to be comfortable playing and I have to respect that.”
With all of that information to digest, what do you guys think? Should Brandon just give it a go and see where he's at? He already stated he would like to come off of the bench for the time being and we desperately could use some consistent bench scoring. Or do you want to take the overly cautious approach and hold him out until after teh All-Star Break or even early Match?

I'm all for Brandon coming back, but I think he needs to get back to full strength and get more practice under his belt.  I think a comeback against LA after the All-star break would be great.

I know Roy is eager to get back on the court, but he needs to remember that if he pushes it too hard, too fast he could re-injure himself.  I think he should wait until after the All-Star break.  I'm with bwinman, Roy needs to get more practices in before he hops back in the game.  The team has adjusted without him and Roy is going to need to fit back into the rhythm.

roy might as well start playing w/ restricted mins. his knees ar not going to heal any further. If he is not able to play now, he likely will not be able to play at all.

Of course Brandon should come back this weekend.
Monitor his minutes closely. Maybe 18 minutes a game?
Toronto and Detroit have got to be two of the best opponents for Brandon to come back against. He doesn't have to takeover, he can just play a great role. Personally I wouldn't mind if Brandon played off the bench all the way until March. Think about what a viable second line we'd have with Patty, Rudy, Brandon, DC & Joel.
We could pose serious threat all game long. LA will lead the great first line of Andre, Wes, Nic and Camby, and Roy would lead the second line. Think about it people.
We understand the consequence of Roy's injury, and we don't have to make him the franchise player for the rest of this year. He could be just as deadly off the bench, much like a Jamal Crawford // Jason Terry.
Until he gets his rhythm back. Then with some careful tweaking, slowly reinsert him back into the starting lineup. I'd say in place of Matthews.
Matthews explosive athleticism and standout defense is great way to take advantage of the opponents' second line.
I don't know why Nate played Wesley and Roy together earlier this season. Batum is just too valuable to not start.
Wesley Matthew's is a perfect "6th Man of the Year" and could become a great Mr. 4th Quarter if Nate paced him a little differently. Similar to Travis Outlaw back in 07-08
    Think about it RipCity.

I can't knock Roy's determination to return, but him of all people should be smart and not try to rush himself back just to be superman.

    I voted "after the All-Star break"...however...

I believe the reasoning behind Roy playing sooner rather than later has to do with the trade deadline, February 24th.  Brandon may be as physically healthy now as he ever will be, and Cho needs a peak at what he has to work with BEFORE this years deadline passes.  Knowing this team and it's chemistry with all of the parts working together and available is key to making educated decisions in the coming days.

Yeah but who in their right mind is going to trade for a guy who has no meniscus, whos own team doesnt even want him anymore? What you think your going to get that steal, grab the miraculous PG or C of the future, not by Trading B-Roy....and B is for Banged UP!

I think after march is the best bet, unless of course you sit him all season. Roy is still a GREAT basketball player, and idk how many of you can remember to the begining of the season but i can swear that Brandon Roy was Ranked as the 3rd best Shooting guard this year, behind #1 wade, and #2 Kobe.........
Well he hasnt had enough playing time to change that statement for the good or bad, so in my book he is still sittin at number 3.
If he can keep resting and slowly get back into workouts, and day by day take it to the next level i think we could salvage this guy, but i also think that too many people have already givin up or Allowed that young punk Wesley Matthews to "take over as the new Roy."

I mean this franchise gave Oden 3 big years for a big NOTHING. Where as Brandon gave this franchise 5 hard years, and now they are giving him.....nothing.
And people wonder why "nice things" are not said about this franchise all the time.....

I think in this scenario it will be up to Nate. He is going to watch Brandon carefully and probably give him some Luke Babbit minutes (2) just to see what he does and continue doing so until he is satisfied with his play and health.

After all-star break. Why rush back?

As far as this talk of B-Roy being the best 6th man the NBA has ever seen..that sounds nice and all, but if Roy can adjust his game to how the Blazers play now there is no way in that fiery place they call hell he's a 6th man.

If Roy can learn to cut a little more, curl off picks a little better OhEmEffingG! You are going to see MVP talks coming our way with Aldridge and Roy.

@Bertram...the problem with the Brandon you describe is that we already have one...Matthews.  This team's issue is now not having a player at the 2 or 3 that create with the bounce.  What once was Brandon's forte, is likely now in the rear view unfortunately.  Nic, Wesley, Rudy, and now Roy, all play off action...none can initiate the action.  For that, the Blazers seem to be solely dependant on Andre Miller.  This is an issue.

Lets bring him back for the home game against the hornets right before the all star break. Get the crowd in an uproar and get a win against a team we are chasing for a higher seed in the west. Bring him off the bench with the second unit and see what he can do, if he looks good, awesome, if not rest him until the playoffs.

This decision is one that needs to be made in a pragmatic way i.e. how his knees handle the stress of game minutes and how he looks on the court. This can't be known until it is known (knowledge gained by actual real life experience) So lets see where our 85 million dollar allstar is by playing him in a real game. That is the real test, and anyway maybe he will look really good to another (stupid) team and we can unload him (never going to happen).

What did the surgeries really accomplish anyway? It seems like everyone said his knees we too broken down to be fixed and that he would have to learn to play differently - well lets see by seeing.

Brandon knows his knees better than anyone, and has played through this his entire career. The Blazer bench needs whatever help he can deliver.
After Cho lands another back up big, he needs to have lunch with Stern and discuss the schedule the Blazers faced to start the season.

@BDawg Wesley is good but he ain't no Brandon Roy. Brandon still has the same skill set, that's not going to change; his mid-range is only going to get better from here. The only thing we are going to have to wait and see on is how effective Brandon can be in the paint. My guess, almost as good or just as good as he was before.

I have been watching Brandon Roy since Washington... Once brandon roy hit this team the future ended... lamarcus aldridge as well.

I know that brandon roy has a health problem that means he is more vulnerable to injuries... which is one reason i want him to stay innactive until after the all stra break if not longer, I have a feeling if he comes back he might be 100% seeing how when driver from greenbay had this surgery he came out saying he feels 4 years younger.

I do not know what to think how about you guys?

I'd like to see Roy practice at full speed a bit more then play in a game.  Get to know your teammates before you jump into something that actually matters.

Given our next three games are against teams we can dominate, I'd say let Roy rest.  Maybe come back against the Hornets, but I'd prefer him to rest up after the All-Star break.  Doesn't seem logical to come back before a week long break.

i wish we could trade those who say roy should be traded.

    or even imply that -.-

because the simple fact of it is. i really wish people would go and look up how many players in the NBA currently play with little minicus. -.-

CP/earl boykins.. to name a few.

the lack of knowledge then speaking on something people just dont know is astounding.

oh oh and i can see it now. when roy returns... because it will take him a few games maybe a week or two.. to get his basketball game back for game speed.. everyone will be saying... "oh hes washed up. bench him. release him." blah blah blah.

See its that kinda of talk that i dont understand.
Matthews is good but there is just simply no way he is at half the caliber of player Roy was, pre meniscus......
And still with the knees goin i have faith in Roy to still play at a higher Caliber than Wesley.
I dont think Roy should start right off the bat though, i think switching him and wesley in and out could be a lethal combination.
Like what the Lakers do with Bynum and Gasol, they have the ability to constantly keep a 7ft-er on the floor at all times, take that and apply that to Roy and Matthews.

But Bdawg made another point with Miller being the only "initiator" on the team. But what i am curious about, if this has anything to do with Nate? and his gameplan? or is it really the simple answer of........ Mills and Johnson are not developed enough to instigate plays, where as miller is a straight up Vet.....

I feel that Roy should wait until his doctors state that he should return.  I have had knee problems and it is not fun and I am sure that he is discouraged but please Roy do what the doctors say, they know best.  This arguing over Roy and LaMarcus is rediculous.  They are collegues, friends and should be treated that way from all of the fans.

    to offer a little perspective....

"slowly reinsert him back into the starting lineup. I'd say in place of Matthews.
Matthews explosive athleticism and standout defense is great way to take advantage of the opponents' second line.
I don't know why Nate played Wesley and Roy together earlier this season. Batum is just too valuable to not start."         <<
            Wesley                                      Batum
    PPG    16.3                                           12.1
    RPG     3.1                                             4.8
    APG     1.9                                             1.5
    SPG     1.2                                             0.8

    3P%    .390                                           .346
    MPG    33.6                                           31.4

I dont think that it is as obvious as you thought...  Our city has a great love for the "World Team".. as do I... but lets not let Twitter/crushes overlap actual production the way that Charles Barkley overlapped the All-Star talk.

Their offense is very comparable.. but it depends against what kind of team do you pull one from the starting line-up... for Defense... When we have a shot blocker in the game, like Camby, or (in dreamland..) Oden... Wesley is more valuable.  When we don't have a shot blocker... then Batum is more valuable.  Again, this is on Defense.

But.. Realistically... I don't think either of them should take a seat... because.. Roy will not be able to defend as well as either of these too... Thus, just one more argument for him staying as a scoring leader off the bench.

Just thought i'd offer some stats, to what seemed to be some sort of obvious fact...

It's been said before already, but the decision should be between his doctors, himself and the coach. personally? if they all feel like he should, give him a few minutes. not alot, but something like 10 or so, just so he can get out there, and test for real how he is feeling with his knees, as well as getting him re-introduced to being on the field with the team, now that is has shifted it's play style.

the ultimate goal should be to have to starting line up as early as possible (in this statement early really means "as early as possible without rushing it, and without sacrificing healthy recoveries/comebacks"

    Brandon Roy
    LaMarcus Aldridge
    Greg Oden
    Wesley Mathews
    Nic Batum

this is the starting 5 line up that will take this team to the top. we just have to wait for all the pieces to be healed up and ready.

as for their injuries, as it has been also mentioned before, countless talented nba players were once in their shoes and also doubted, many of them, are still gigantic forces in current day NBA.

here's a list from Mike Rice's blog on this issue:

    Grant Hill
    Blake Griffin
    Amare Stoudemire
    Jason Kidd
    Djuan Blair
    Tracy McGrady
    Kenyon Martin
    Andrew Bogut
    Andew Bynum
    Chris Paul
    Gilbert Arenas
    Steve Nash

Brandon and Greg are not done yet. I for one shall continue to wait for them, why? because I'm a massive aldridge fan, and his game will only get better once he is next to both greg and brandon roy. as for everyone doubting Roy working together with L-Train, a little team called Miami Heat have a not so old-history tale to tell you. they hit a few bumps early on, but now, look at them. Wade and Lebron worked out their differences, and they werent even friends before the team, in the case of Aldridge and Roy, they've been colleagues for a very long time. Why would Roy not pass the ball to Aldridge in the game, he did it before, now he'll do it even more often knowing now what a God he is, and vice versa LaMarcus will also pass to him, they will work together, and it'll be awesome.

It's not like the offense has that much movement around it right now... Basically all we're doing is posting up LA with shooters on the wings and corners or running him and andre on a pick and fade.
I also don't understand why everybody thinks that having B-Roy back is gonna hurt LA, I think it should actually help him.  Having a healthy B-Roy back should demand some double-teams cause the league knows what he can do.  It will be harder to double LA with Roy on the court and we know how well LA does one-on-one.
