With Oden Gone For The Year, How Does It Affect The Season's Outcome?
Keep Expectations The Same - Get Out Of The 1st Round (59)
     66%
Toss Expectations Out The Window - Rebuild (8)
     9%
Lower Expectations - Just Fight For Playoffs (16)
     18%
We're Still The Trail Blazers - It's Title Time! (7)
     8%

With the unfortunate news coming out late last night that former #1 overall pick, Greg Oden, needs season-ending microfracture surgery, how does this change the outlook on the 2010-11 season? Should Portland cut their losses and just try to start over and hope to strike gold with another #1 pick opportunity? Is the team good enough, even without Oden, to make a splash in the Western Conference? Does it still depend on Brandon Roy and how well he can heal? I feel like we've been in this position before--last year, and we ended up scrapping our way to 50 wins and a playoff spot. Do we try and accomplish the same or head in a new direction?

If Oden was clear & healthy from December on, then anything less than the Western Conference Finals would have been very disappointing.  With Oden out I will lower my expectations but still Blazers MUST win the first round this year.  BATTLE Rip City!

It's not because of Greg being out that I voted (C), It has to do with injuries all around. Especially with Roy being hurt, Joel still being out even though we are all grinding out teeth with antisipation of his return, and Jeff, and now Greg. If anything, I think it helps us to know now that Greg won't be returning this season. With that knolledge we can start to plan and play without G.O., we can focus on the team as it is and make a run for the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I believe in our team. I will be shocked if we didn't make the playoffs again, I just see us running into the same issues as the last 2 years unless we can get there with a healthy roster.

You make a valid point. While, personally, I thought Oden was the key to our championship success, we must factor in everything else. And that everything else includes Brandon Roy. He and LA, at 100%, are good enough to make us contenders in the West. I think this season comes down to how healthy B-Roy can be.

I can't believe we are still hanging onto Oden.  He has played 80 games out of .. what 280?>??  Seriously, let the man out of the contract and keep the people who can play.  We have been just fine without Oden.  Bring back JP, at least he was extremely motivated and at least he pulled his weight when we needed him the most.  Oden.. Oden, who???  Cut the losses already, he isn't going to make the team any better, it's been long enough.

I can tell you that Greg was extremely motivated as well. You don't come back from 3 separate setbacks if you are not motivated. I just don't get why people are blaming Oden. Do you think he really enjoys being injured?

I dont understand people feeling sorry for someone who was paid millions for 1/4 work, and all medical bills covered. Its a good job if you can get it.
The way I hear it, Oden only did half what trainers asked. People wont let this go. They want to be depressed. This site used to be fun.

With ALL of the "knee"injuries that the Blazers have had over the past several seasons one has to wonder, as I did, if there is some training issues that are causing these.  There are FAR TOO MANY injuries of this kind.  My bottom line is that there is SOMETHING out of the "ordinary" going on with this team !!!  I have also noticed what appears to be an "attitude shift" with the players.  There seems to be a lack of desire on the court.

i have never agreed more with you than now.
This was up to Oden to take care of, he is the only one to blame.

Everyone truly expected Oden to return. They gave all their hopes up before the season even started on him.
I think that if the Blazers can acquire an all star type player such as Iggy, i think that they might still have a chance. Oden may be officially out for the seas, but Brandon Roy is NOT!
We can give up hope on Roy, he is a tough guy who has stuck with Portland, i'd like to think he knows how good the team could be, he knows that they are packed full of potential, but like i have mentioned many times before, there is a missing link.
Whether it be Nate, and the way he runs this team, or the absence of a dominant PG or C presence, i think the Blazers are getting closer to filling that void.
I would not count this team out of the Playoff Picture just yet, lets light a fire under their butts and watch them Blaze a Trail to the Finals.hahah

My expectations are the same with this team. I think Kim said somewhere else, we can't really miss what we never really had or something like that. Anyways, We are still a good team and I will hazard to say we are still playoff bound even if Roy's minutes are cut in half. I have faith in Nate getting the highest effort from these hungry players. I think Cho, as I write this, is committed to making this team better for this season. I'm really happy that this organization finally knows about Oden, as someone else said on this thread.
Fact is, the people (except Roy) weren't going to get us into the playoffs anyway. It was going to be the team playing together, with toughness, and grit like we did last year.
I'm really excited to see what happens in the next couple of months, but what I don't expect is that anyone in this organization will lay down and die without a fight. Go Blazers!!

Same ordeal.  Just get out of the first round.  If we lose in a 7 game series in the first round this season will be nothing but a disappointment.  With Oden, we could be WCF challengers.  Without Oden, we're waiting another year.

My expectations have always been the same with this team. I have always thought this team was great, and Greg Oden was always just the icing on the cake. If Greg is there awesome, if not we are still a great team. However, It's the injurys of BROY, JOEL,.....(do i really need to add alll the names we have heard thousands of times) that have concerned me. Not to mention the loss of key guys over the years like Blake, Outlaw, Jack, Frye. The few guys that can stay healthy we let go (Bayless,Howard, etc). Roy's injury really concerns me as a fan. When will we start putting the blame on the athletic trainers on this team? I've never seen anything like it. We need to get the guys from the suns because the brought back Grant Hill, and made Shaq put up all star numbers for the first and last time in years !!!!

why would we change our expectations? within the next couple of days we'll have Joel back. according to my count, that gives us two centers. and that's not to mention LaMarcus and Sean who can also play the position. Dustin is correct; it's more about Brandon that Greg. we're only 12 games into the season -- it's not time to freak out and redesign our strategy or projections. Brandon is out for two more games (according to the report i read). it's certainly not time to panic.

Not being mentioned... the loss of Oden was the loss of the only valuable asset NOT currently a rotational player.  For this team to now make a deal to improve THIS season before the deadline, will now mean Cho having to move a rotational player NOT named Roy.  Roy has NO value now around the league.  There will always be teams willing to take a chance on Greg.  He had value for this reason, and was a coveted asset.  WAS.  This is where this Portland team is hurt most IMO.  Cho is the most underpaid GM in the league now, for sure.

Here's the deal fans.  Between Roy and LA, you are spending HALF of your cap money.  You will have a hard time finding two more overpaid players in the league right now on the same team...value per dollar, with Roy now being essentially relegated to a jumpshooter.  Roy's contract runs through 2015!  In two weeks time, this franchise lost it's cornerstone, gaining a complimentary.  Problem is, that complimentary piece is guaranteed cornerstone money for the next 5 years.  LA arguably also overpaid, and almost at a max deal himself.  How do you rebuild with half your money spent?  Expectations lowered.  Sorry.  I'm a realist, and don't fantasize much.  Bottom line...the X's and O's are just not there anymore.

Things for Paul Allen only worsen if with the CBA, we see a hard cap come down.  All of this said, and as challenging as this situation seems to be...I have every confidence that we have the best in the league now at the helm, and if anyone can turn this thing around, it's Rich Cho.

100% agree with D's assessment.  Season expectations lie with Roy's health.

Can't miss what you've never had. Oden had not even made an appearance this season (or preseason) and has missed more games than he's played during his time in Portland. Save for possibly keeping team moral up (which is unlikely, given that he's hurt. Again. And out for the season. Again.) Oden is just dead weight.

(The majority of)Portland loves him, but him being gone makes no difference for the team.

The only reason to lower expectations is if Roy cant play at the same level he has in the past. if he comes back after these couple games off and 12 days of rest and looks good and can play the whole season the expectations should remain high

Does it still depend on Brandon Roy and how well he can heal?

Yes, it does. It really does depend on if B-Roy can return to his All-Star form or not. If he can't, then expectations need to change and there's no contending for anything without a franchise player and go-to guy. If he can, then we surely have a chance of winning a series with a healthy Camby/Joel duo at the center spot.

If we had a healthy Greg, though, then you're talking about contending for the WCF and providing a legit threat to the Lakers. But that's not going to happen this year.

it is not time to panic yet as we are only 12 games in.  I am more concerned about these two players being healthy and being good. I am more concerned that the blazers do the right thing by roy that by playing him they dont further injure him or make him crippled for the rest of his life.  that is my concern.  Yes I wanted these two back healthy.  lets not forget we will have pryz back next week and that will help.  right now we do have sean marks and la can play center too.  with roy down it isnot as panic time as wesley matthews is playing great ball and the other guys have stepped up.  I agree with charles barkley (which is rare for me) that sometimes we need to save a player from himself.  is that time to do that with roy now?  I hope much wisdom is used wtih him.  I care about roy as a player and as a person.  he is so young...and does not need to further hurt himself....im not going to panic im going to enjoy this team and support them.  time to battle on...

So you do not feel bad for people who have not achieved their dream or people who are hurt? I'm sure Greg isn't happy with sitting on the bench even with all the money living under a microscope listening to people bash him all the time and not having one ounce of control over ANY of it. I for one am not devastated but I do feel for the guy. And yes the site used to be fun because we were on the upswing with all this potential, but when that potential has been dropped into the bottomless pit with our two franchise players it usually isn't so fun. If you want to have and appreciate the highs you have to have some lows. But I guess you are the authority on what to feel and who to feel for.

Also you yourself repeatedly said "don't believe everything you read on the internet", but now it must be ok to read about Greg putting in half of what the trainers asked. We heard directly from Jay Jensens mouth that Greg did everything he asked him to do, and yet you sit here hypocritically believing something else found on the internet. Actually if you think about it he may have done too much too soon and that is why he injured himself.

I think we shouldnt let our expectations drop.  We just need to trade one or two of our players with expiring contracts so that we can get a good center.  We are in prime position right now to make a trade since we have multiple first rounders in next years draft and also three players with expiring contracts.  We really need to do something with those expiring contracts to get another big if we want to actually make it past the first round this year.  I think we will probably at least make it too the playoffs if we get lucky with injuries the rest of the season and if Pryzbilla comes back healthy,  but I think we need to raise our expectations to making it to at least the second round this year and the only way we can do that is if we make a trade using the expiring contracts, draft picks, and young players on our team to aquire a solid big man and maybe a younger pg.

Expectations remain the same. Get out of the first round and go further than that. None of that hinges on Greg Oden anymore, it lies all on Brandon Roy and team chemistry. Aldridge is finally making that transformation into a consistent post threat and we'll have 2 centers who can block shots and rebound.

I personally feel that Oden is done being a Blazer, there is a small chance that he might become the dominate player we all thought he would be but after 3 knee surgeries i'll take my chances playing against him than paying for someone who can't even warm the bench during games. As for the blazers making it to the playoff I feel they still have a strong chance to make it passed the first round Depending if Roy can learn to adjust or adapt to becoming a perimeter player than the run and gun player we know him to be. When wehave Mathews to do that for us.

I feel like the both parties in this would take a positive out of the Blazers cutting Oden. Firstly, the blazers can stop wasting their money, and Oden can stop having to deal with the stress of a good team waiting on his injury to help in a competitive playoff race. Either way, it's still a bust of a pick for the Trail Blazers.

I just don't see the good in cutting Oden. Let me ask you this- "What's worse than all of these injuries for Oden?"
Answer: Seeing him go to another team and dominate.

Greg is only 22 and while he may never be the #1 pick we need him to do, he could still be a serviceable big man for us. Why not offer him the qualifying offer and sign him to a reasonable deal? Its not like we're going to be under the cap anytime soon anyways.

But when you got people on this website complaining about the team's performance saying things like " i dont waste my money to see things like that" or whatever form it comes in, the real robbery for all these fans is that Giant 7 ft 300 lb Vacuum, just sitting in the Rose Garden Maintenance Closet, collecting dust.

Why not promise him a years worth of money, at his salary rate, After he gives you a full year, because this team has already givin him 3, for nothing but a big fat Excuse.
And excuse that this team uses for everything, why we cant win, how we are better than teams like OKC and CHI. Things that are not true, we actually do have Oden when we play against those teams, he's the dude over there on the bench at the end.
He is the anchor that is weighing this team down, physically and emotionally. The players, Brandon LaMarcus, they think about it as much as we do if not more, so imagine how they feel when we play a team and players like d.Howard just dominate inside.

Blazers are 8 n' 10 and got beat 5 times in a row. All our Blazers look like they're limping out there, and we're not even a quarter ways through the season. Our reserves have been heavily depleted through injury and trade. I personally don't think the front office is being square with fans. Are we rebuidling? Are we semi-rebuilding? Are we just using ductape and glue until Oden can come back strong and healthy? Because if that's the case Blazer higharchy, these other Blazers will be worn out by the time Greg gets back on the court!

Hire some players Cho gosh darnit! We lost Jeff Pendergraph early in combat this year. He was gonna have a tremendous season, taking the role that Juwan Howard had as main reserve big man. Who'd the Blazers hire to replace our heavyweight? NOBODY?!? Wow, then Cho canned him. NICE. From a business standpoint, Cho has left me with the impression that he's a wholesale expertise mananger that is interested in finding a cheaper but harder to maintain alternative while the Blazers struggle winning ball games, and Blazer fans are struggling to watch them get beat down.
I think there's some really good fans here in Portland. It's amazing to the majority of folks voting that this team can still contend with the big dogs, and win the 1st round of the playoffs without Greg Oden in the paint. I think after this losing streak some of those folks would indeed change their vote.
