According to Marc Stein at ESPN.com (or to be more specific, according to Marc Stein's sources) the Trail Blazers and Fabricio Oberto, a 6-10 center from Argentina, have come to a "contract agreement":

Sources told ESPN.com that Oberto -- who has turned down several offers from Europe in recent weeks because he was determined to keep playing in the NBA -- is joining the Blazers on a one-year deal to fortify their depth as Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla continue to recover from the serious knee injuries they suffered last season.

Oberto, who played his first four NBA season for the San Antonio Spurs before signing with the Wizards last season, boasts career averages of 3.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 14.2 ppg.

    Thoughts?

Jeff is out for the season and because of that his contract is up at the end of the year. We need the roster space this year. Hopefully, if everything works out right, Blazers can get him back after the season.

Needed size, Oberto has good hands around the basket and a decent shot.

Welcome to Portland. Maybe we can waive Jeff and trade a guard for a future pick after the year and sign him back on. Healthy would be the prerequisite of course.
I am a fan of getting the regular season started already!!! I need my fix!

Good signing to fill the gap between Joel's return. I just feel bad for Pendergraph since it seems inevitable that he'll have to be moved due to the knee injury.

Welcome Oberto!! I think he'll give us some good minutes when needed and then not be a distraction when he's not getting as many minutes. Really glad we didn't get Varejao too!

Yes, that is really incredible to average 3.2 points in just 14.2 points per game. :^O

I like oberto because although he is not the best big man we could have gotten he will be able to produce reasonably well while camby and Pryzbilla are out and I don't think he will complain about minutes once all our bigs return since he wouldnt recieve  any more minutes than we will give him on most other teams.

Couldn't be happier.  He is not only the type of player to fortify the middle in Joel and Greg's absence, he more importantly brings with him a toughness that is invaluable to a team with post season aspirations.  Brilliant move!

As far as his career numbers?

Oberto is not a Zach Randolph type player that will ever be known for stat padding.  Rather, he is a player that puts stat players on their backs in the paint, and THAT is his value to this team.  He will be surrounded by teammates looking for numbers, content on just doing the dirty work, never complaining about minutes...or lack of.  Great fit.  Love this!  Welcome to Rip City Oberto!

Yeah basically don't run any plays for him, and we'll be fine. I don't think he will mind, and he is another big body to back up camby or aldridge until pryz and Oden get back  And like I said he won't cause chemistry issues or whine about his lack of touches or minutes but another thing I like is he won't cost way too much (like Varejao would have).

Finally, a big man who will help our team in the paint - thank you cho!!!!!! you see the gaps and you fill them - awesome!!! I love this guy (oberto) was well coached by POP, does his job workman like, a true asset. I'm feeling better about our team now. On a side note, maybe another fellow Spanish speaker can help Rudy feel more comfortable here this season.

Not to be overlooked, is the addition of Oberto WITHOUT having to part with any of the major assets needed for the PGOTF deal.  Well done Cho.

@kenny c:  agree with your Rudy thought.  Oberto's presence, particularly with Pop's influences, can't help but be a good thing where Fernandez is concerned.

I hate to see Jeff go...and I would love to see him sign back with us once he's healthy, but this is a business and a fanbase and a franchise that is HUNGRY for a championship. Welcome Oberto, GREAT addition considering we really didn't need to trade for anything.

Oberto :-)  good, experienced player who should grabs some rebounds and help Camby defending Portland basket. In this time, close to start of the season it was good move, so maybe without no more injuries Portland can play really good, waiting for Joel and Greg ... GO BLAZERS !
