    18. Portland
Brandon Roy, a brooding Rudy Fernandez and Greg Oden's latest comeback? In. Say no more.

By the way, at some point, I need the $33.4 million Wesley Matthews contract explained to me. Yeah, this was an especially dense summer for front offices: Channing Frye, Darko Milicic, Amir Johnson, Brendan Haywood, Al Harrington, Drew Gooden, Hakim Warrick and Travis Outlaw signed for a combined $248 million even as the owners were crying for a hard salary cap and reduced payrolls. (Savvy, fellas. Way to hold the fort.) But in every case, I got it. Either the team wanted to spend enough to get to the cap minimum; it severely overrated a non-impact player; it panicked; it screwed up; it was delusional; or, in David Kahn's case with Darko, all of the above. But Portland paid Matthews (at least) twice what he was worth to back upBrandon Roy.

    Huh???

Why not trade Fernandez first? Why do it at all? What am I missing? And how fast did Matthews' agent say, "WE AGREE TO YOUR OFFER!" Two seconds? One second? Half a second? I'm so confused. Even if you did it just to collect an asset for trading down the road -- like what Houston did with Trevor Ariza last season -- how will Matthews keep his value with a bad contract if he's playing 10 minutes a game? Please explain this to me. Someone. Anyone. Actually, add him to the list of reasons Portland is No. 18: I need to see Wesley Matthews in person again. Maybe I missed the magic the first time around.

I know Portland does not get national recognition, they often are over looked and never given any credit. To me, Wes looks like a potential 6th man of the year player, and with more than backing up Roy abilities, he can be added with Roy as a defensive and offensive asset. Do you agree that Portland paid too much for him, do you think Rudy should still be traded? This blog has more than one topic, but after reading Simmons' article I could not disagree more. After all the title of Portland's category, ranked at number 18 is "half empty glass" Opinions please...

I am a fan of Wesley Matthews for 6th man of the year...

It's thinking like this that explains to me how people can get things so wrong to the point that the Blazers are in the bottom half of the league in not only this ranking, but also in 2k's ratings. Individually and collectively the blazers are one of the worst teams, while OKC is the 5th overall team. LOL so funny, can't wait for the season to get going and for all these morons to shut their holes. I also like that they are underrating PHX yet again.  Articles as opinionated as this should be held accountable after they are proven to be way off base.

Bill probably never saw a Blazer game in his life, unless it was when he was rooting for his Lakers to beat us.
We lost Batum, Fernandez, and Outlaw all within a month of the start to last season. KP elected not to sign free agent reserve Ime Udoka, and instead a heavy load of minutes were put onto Webster and Roy's shoulders. Bayless had to step up to the backup 2 spot, and the Blazers were forced to run a 3 guard lineup on occasion, with Brandon or Rudy at the 3spot.
Wesley Matthews brings us versatility that we did not have with Webster, as Martell was a tough and heady player, but had relatively no handles in Portland's weird looking, make a big pile, then stop and go, set bad screens, go hide in the corner for 20 seconds, and never cut to the basket, offensive sets.
I am a fan of multiple All-Stars on the Blazers roster this season!

Well I do agree with Bill in one aspect...I think we definitely overpaid for Wesley. $33.4 million?? Are you kidding me? I think if we really played the market right, we could have still gotten him, but for a much lower price. But I do not think that we are 18th in the league? Yea freakin right Bill! Like Tobyus said, Bill has probably never watched a Blazer game in which they weren't playing the Lakers. I do think the team will get more national recognition this year (which I like because I'm at college in Missouri and don't get all the games). But let's get this season underway and we'll see who's laughing at the end.

Wesley Matthews winning the 6th man of the year award, is apparently a contagious dream that is spreading through Portland. The guy is in his 2nd year in the league, he didnt put up eye popping numbers last year, and his current team has WAY bigger problems to worry about. (ha.Bigger)
6th men, are some of the hardest working players in the league, and they usually have the reputation, before they win it, with ben gordon being the only rookie to have ever won the award, throwing up similar stats as WM, but managing to score 6 more points, while averaging less playing time.  Look at last years winner, Crawford, has been one of the most reliable and hard working players for a number of years, he just shut's up and does his job( possible mentor for Rudy?).
As for your three gaurd setup, its still going to happen. Except now your going to have matthews instead of Webster, so your smaller, weighs a bit less, and isnt as money from the 3pt line. If i was a member of Blazers management i would be more concerned with finding out how many other positions Wesley and the rest of the young guys can play.

Just assuming anyone who points out something negative about your team, is a laker fan, is just naive. It shows that they're right, and you have no points to argue it. The season hasnt even begun, and i will tell you who's laughing (other than Rudy, who is in such a sweet position now) its the rest of your now apparent "easy" division. Its the rest of the teams who HAVE ALL THEIR CENTERS! The blazers are holding on to a long lost dream, theyre spending all their focus on their fabulous starters, Roy Aldridge, Oden. They forgot about the rest of the team, and now the season is at their doorstep, their ever so youth filled bench with little experience, has now become an even more important part of the team, and you guys think that you should be rated higher than number 18?
OKC showed the entire country last year why they should be a top 10 team, they blew through everyone, they weren't holding on to some sinking ship center, who is unfortunately dragging the rest of the team down with him. Durant won scoring champ, russel westbrook showed he is just as good as his potentially  MvP teammate. This is why i believe the blazers are making all the wrong moves, and if they continue they will lose the position that theyre in, which is to become a top ten team, or crawl back down that rabbit whole and wait for Waltons Grandson to come by....
The blazers would be a top 10 team, if they could turn Aldridge into an Allstar worthy player, if they could find a center who averages a better ration than 82 games per 3 years, and if they can add some lethal bench players. They need some depth, not just youth and flash, reliable, battle hardened players.

Bill Simmons proves he's an idiot. Portland is an elite team right now, even without our centes. Just imagine if Oden,Przybilla and the whole theam are healthy. Sky's the limit.
We gon beat OKC if we get them in the PO,no apellate.

Hold It people. Pre--------Season.  Give our team a chance to warmup.  The 82 season hasn't started yet and we still have to cut a few players.  We're at 19 now so don't expect to see a lot of our starters.  We do have a great team and I believe in them.  Our number one player is asking for the ball and there is no other player on this team that needs it like him.  About anyone thinking we are number 18 just wait a second or two and they will be singing a new song!  Can anyone say long season head?  Lets all say it together.  On the count of three...

We should keep Rudy as long as he is productive.  Wesley is a good player, but we have to see what he can do in the regular season against other teams that study him.  Every smart team will pull their starters and save them for the regular season. With that said, everyone take a deed breath!  Thank You!

The signing of Wesley was not to much for three reasons, first: his overall talent on both ends of the floor. Second: the signig hurt one of the portland's biggest hurdles in the western conference, and third which I feel is the most important one: his work ethic, desire to win, and willingness to go toe to toe with any player on the floor. the third one you can't coach its a natural trait either you have or you don't. That is why so many fans love Prizzbila he has those same traits.

Last year it wasn't enough with Millsap.
He's not overpaid if he produces, plus it's not your money.
A lot of teams got better on paper, but it is still preseason.

If Mathews can produce like he as this pre-season in the regular season I say it was worth it.
If he can help this team win the division, and make it pass the first round no ones going to care we gave him $33 Million.

Right now he's looking like the main focus on our second unit, he's playing well with Bayless. DC and Rudy.
Swap Miller out of the first unit for Mathews and it becomes more uptempo. (I wouldn't be surprised to see that line-up late in games)

I personally don't care what the national media thinks of us. We know how good our team is.

last time i checked the blazers weren't the only team in the league, and you have to take into consideration, that camby didnt mess up his groin or tweak his hip last year, you had rudy coming off the bench.

If OKC is a top ten team Portland is a top 5 team. They were better than OKC last season with the second most injuries in the league while OKC had the least.

With a healthy Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge we will always be a better team than OKC. Just get the season started and Blazers will claim that spot that we never really lost in the "heir to the lakers" throne.

I actually read this article and this is posted in the completely wrong context... This is not a ranking of team talent, this is ,from a Clipper fan's view, the teams he is most excited to watch his team face.  He isn't doing his personal rankings so after reading this idc how excited to see our team he is, we should be top 5 in teams he is afraid of his precious clippers facing.

Only part of this article I agree with is that the Blazers should have traded Rudy before getting Mathews.  It is going to be hard to get Mathews more than 20 minutes per game since the Blazers already have Roy and Rudy.  I don't think we should have paid so much for a backup to Roy when we already have a backup to Roy who plays around 20 minutes per game.
I am a fan of the Blazers draft selections. Feels good to finally be able to say that

That would be a slap in Lamarcus' face. If I had a team with Blake Griffin on it I would be most excited to see teams with elite PF's.
Speaking of Griffin, yikes! If he gets a hang of the NBA game quickly I think he will be ROY, and I think he will dominate Lamarcus down low and make LA reconsider going into the low post or rebounding. He's got massive talent.

I don't even waste my time with Simmons. He's hated us every since we won the lottery over his Celts back in 07. Not to mention, his predictions are horrible and never come true. How's that 42 game win total you predicted from us last year Billy?
