It’s been over a year since Kevin Duckworth passed away, but his legacy as a teammate, friend and avid fisherman was on the minds of all who were in attendance for the dedication of the Kevin J. Duckworth Memorial Dock on the banks of the Willamette River south of the Rose Garden.
“We miss Duck,” said Trail Blazers president Larry Miller. “We love him and this is going to be something that is going to allow us to keep his memory going here in the city of Portland.”
On a sunny afternoon befitting the occasion, Kevin Duckworth’s family, his friends, current and former Trail Blazers, members of the Portland city council and fans gathered to witness the formal renaming of the “L” shaped dock on the Vera Katz Esplanade in honor of Duckworth’s contributions to the community.

Last day of camp. We finished the camp by doing a youth girls basketball clinic on Sunday morning for girls ages 12-17. Teresa Edwards and Nykesha Sales directed the activities and many of the other coaches here helped with the drills. Following camp, the girls listened to the HIV/AIDS message from Hoops4Hope just as they boys did. The message was the same, but how they taught it was quite different. Hoops4Hope is doing some wonderful things in South Africa.

Hoops4Hope was back at it today. The message focused on HIV/AIDS and Healthy Living. Just like the leadership message to the campers, this was another powerful session for the kids.
HIV and aids are so prevalent here in Africa and this “Life Skills” message was about how to keep from getting and spreading HIV. The things that I like most about the way that Kita and his group teach is that they have terrific positive energy, they keep the teachings simple, but powerful, and they use the game of basketball to teach the lessons. Obviously, what was taught today is so important because of the loss of life from HIV/AIDS.

The best parts of day 3 had very little to do with the basketball we played today on the court. I worked once again with Dwight Howard and also got to work with Dikembe Mutombo on post defense. I think I am learning as much about post play as some of the campers getting to work with these two players and Chris Bosh yesterday. The campers competed like crazy and tried to take it all in. Our team also one a close, hard fought game in the afternoon. But we talked about how we can play much better. The kids play so hard but this effort at times can lead to playing too fast and making out of control plays. But we loved again how our team competed and we have done a nice job of playing together. We love our team as kids. A very appreciative and caring group of kids.

Another great day- was all hoops today for the coaching staff. Started by doing an hour of media and pictures with everyone. Once most of the NBA players finished with the media, we got into some fundamental drill work. I was part of the offensive post-play station. We had 15 minutes with each of the six teams. I threw hundreds of passes to players flashing into the post area. None of them looked quite as good as when I made passes to both of my post-play assistants- Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh.

What a day. Wow! We just finished day one of the seventh edition of Basketball without Borders- Africa. I have heard what a terrific experience this camp has been from Chad Buchanan (who attended last year), Kevin Pritchard (who attend a few years back) and various other NBA coaches and scouts. I am really excited to see how the week plays out. I want to first talk a little history of BWOB and this years camp as well. The BWOB Africa camp was created by the NBA/WNBA to reach out into the community and provide projects focusing on education, grassroots basketball development and HIV/AIDS education. The BWOB Africa is a huge outreach program to help the African community in so many different ways.
