In these dark days of early winter, it seems as if every impatient Trail Blazer fan who blogs or tweets is crying out, "What's wrong with the team?"
Well, just to be contrary, here's a perspective that argues that the Blazers' 40th edition could be among the best Portland teams of all time in terms of sharing the ball.

When the Portland Trail Blazers (12-7) host the Miami Heat (9-6) at 7:00 PST on Tuesday night at the Rose Garden, fans might be seeing one of the most significant games of this young season. While it's far too early to label any game a "must-win", this Trail Blazers team will be looking to put together 48 minutes of high energy and intensity, which certainly has been missing in the losses to Memphis and Utah. Portland should be confident coming into this game, as they held the Heat to only 82 points per game in the season sweep last season. The 82 points were a season-low scoring average for Trail Blazers opponents, and Portland has won the past four meetings against the Heat.

During the first quarter of the season, the Portland Trail Blazers (12-7) seemed to have a nice ability to bounce back from poor performances. Only once this season had this team lost back-to-back games. However, after a tough 106-96 loss to Memphis on Friday night, the Trail Blazers came out flat against the Utah Jazz (9-7) and ultimately fell 108-92 at the Delta Center. This marks the fourth consecutive home victory for Utah against the Trail Blazers, and ends a two game winning streak in the series for Portland.

The Utah Jazz bounced back from an ugly home loss earlier this week with an impressive performance in their next game, something the Portland Trail Blazers hope to emulate.
Based on their history in Salt Lake City, that won't be easy.
The Trail Blazers look to bounce back from a surprising home loss Saturday night and avoid their 15th loss in their last 17 visits to Utah.

With a career-high tying six three-pointers, Martell Webster became the eighth Trail Blazers to hit 300 three-pointers in franchise history … Webster’s 24 points marked a season high, just two short of a career best.

“There was none. I mean, energy? There was no energy out there in the first half. That team comes in here and jumps on us like that? No energy. I thought for most of the game there was no energy and really no excuse for no energy.”

It is often said that the game of basketball is a game of runs. Unfortunately for the Portland Trail Blazers (12-6) they couldn't quite overcome a 31-2 run by the Memphis Grizzlies (6-10) in the first half, and eventually fell 106-96. With the win, the Grizzlies ended an eight game losing streak to the Trail Blazers, and won at the Rose Garden for the first time since the 2006-2007 season. This loss snapped a six-game home winning streak for Portland, but the 12-6 start does equal the same 18-game mark as last season.

Tonight marks the 80th consecutive Trail Blazers sellout at the Rose Garden (including playoffs), dating back to Dec. 21, 2007.

“I thought we looked like we had heavy legs. That third quarter, it looked kinda like we were in slow motion and we missed our free throws tonight. We shot 58% from the free throw line but in the fourth quarter I thought we had some guys that had some legs. ‘Dre and Dante I thought gave us a lift and we were able to have a 31 point quarter. We did what we needed to do to get through this game.

Although the New Jersey Nets (0-15) entered the game still searching for their first victory this season, the Portland Trail Blazers (12-5) knew that the Nets weren't going to just hand them a victory. With the Nets keeping the game close into the 4th quarter, the Trail Blazers used some great shooting from beyond the arc to pull out the 93-83 victory. With their 12-5 start, this team now has the best 17-game start to a season since the 1999-2000 season. With this win, the Trail Blazers have now won their last four games against New Jersey.

“I thought he was great. I thought he was really patient in the post, did a nice job of taking his time, reading the defense, and if the defense played him with single coverage he was able to score. He got deep post position to start with. When they tried to double team, he did a good job of making good decisions out of the post. I thought he was really good. His pick and roll defense was really good on Rose, being up on those screens and forming that wall we talked about. I thought our bigs, not just Greg, but Greg, LaMarcus – you know, the combination of Greg, LaMarcus, and Brandon with Andre coming in and keeping that thing going.

After a terrific first half performance, which saw the Trail Blazers (11-5) build a double-digit lead, there was an ominous feeling in the Rose Garden. Having seen the Trail Blazers allow teams to battle back from huge deficits, the fans became even more antsy when the lead was whittled down to six points in the third quarter. Instead of allowing the Chicago Bulls (6-7) to make it an interesting fourth quarter, the Trail Blazers put their foot on the gas and completely dominated the final 16 minutes of the game in their 122-98 win. The 122 points is a season-high for the Trail Blazers and they have now won five straights games against the Bulls.
