  11. ABOUT FOUNDATION BATUM
Founded in memory of Richard Batum, husband of Sylvie Charriere-Batum and father of Nicolas and Pauline Batum, to create sustainable opportunities for African women to raise their children in safe, healthy, family environments. Richard played professional basketball in France for ten years before his tragic death in 1991.

Foundation Batum's inaugural goal is to work with a small village called M'Bour, located two hours from Dakar, Senegal. The Foundation would like to build a place for women and their families to be housed for up to one year. The women will begin the program dependent on Foundation Batum, but will participate in activities and chores to help them develop work skills to become independent. Programming includes growing vegetables and raising poultry and cattle that, in turn, will provide resources and help to support the sale of artisan goods made by these African women.

OregonLive.com "Nicolas Batum, with an assist from Nate McMillan, enlists Trail Blazers in worthy cause."
