In an overwhelming show of community support, fans attending tonight’s Portland Trail Blazers game against the Orlando Magic raised more than $65,000 to assist the Haiti earthquake response.

On Tuesday, a massive 7.0 earthquake rocked the Caribbean nation of Haiti, near Port-au-Prince, causing mass devastation. Funds are urgently needed to provide safe water, temporary shelter systems, essential medical supplies and additional services to the displaced to aid in relief efforts.

Along with partner Mercy Corps, Trail Blazers staff, alumni and volunteers solicited the donations at ingress of tonight’s game at the Rose Garden. Fans donated what they could, in amounts ranging from $1 to $3,000.

An ingress collection of more than $49,000 was tallied by halftime. The Trail Blazers matched the first $16,000 donated by fans, bringing the grand total just over $65,000.

“This is a testament to the character of our fans,” Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. “Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti, and we are among the many keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.”

The National Basketball Association and National Basketball Players Association participated as well, contributing $1 million to support the relief efforts. The NBA and the Players Association will join forces with UNICEF and other relief agencies to provide emergency assistance to the estimated three million victims.

The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and the Seattle Seahawks have each made a contribution to Medical Teams International in support of the organization's relief efforts in Haiti.  Medical Teams International has sent doctors and nurses as well as shipments of medical supplies in response to the worst disaster in Haiti in 200 years.  These teams will treat orthopedic injuries and care for those who are homeless.
