Elliot Williams Stays Moving

It will take some time for Elliot Williams, just like every other rookie in the league, to adjust to the speed and athleticism of the NBA. You can practice all you want, but there’s simply no substitute for in-game experience.

But when it comes to the travel associated with life in the NBA, Williams is already approaching veteran status after spending much of the summer flying across the country.

“I’ve just working out a lot of different places,” said Williams before participating in a workout at the Trail Blazers’ practice facility. “I’ve been from L.A. to Portland to Memphis to New York, a lot of travel. But that’s part of it. You’ve just got to get used to it.”

Not that he’s been traveling for traveling’s sake. Williams, who says "my body is good" after missing the Las Vegas summer league with a minor knee injury, is looking for games. Wherever the run is, he’ll be there, which is why he spent some time recently in Los Angeles working out with Jeff Pendergraph and Andre Miller. Yes, the same Andre Miller who once said he “doesn’t really pick up a basketball” during the offseason.

“It was great,” said Williams. “Andre Miller, he’s one of the best point guards in the league. Just being able to learn a lot from veteran guys. And Pendergraph, I was out there with him in summer league, we got a good connection. It was just fun being out there with them.”

Williams noted he, Miller and Pendergraph didn’t “go after it too hard,” but the fact that he’s already under Miller’s tutelage is great news. While the entire team might not show up a month before training camp like in years past, they’re still keeping in contact with each other, building some camaraderie and muscle before the start of the season.

After logging a couple thousand more miles flying to Memphis to spend some time at home and to New York for the NBA Rookie Transitions program (which was the only break Williams has taken from workouts since summer league), Williams is back in Oregon and has already settled into the home he’ll be staying in this season. And now he’s back in the gym, working on preparing for training camp with Brandon Roy and Armon Johnson.

“I’m getting stronger, getting my legs stronger, always working on my shot,” said Williams. “Just being able to play both point guard and shooting guard. Shooting guard is my natural position but I’m working a lot on game tempo. Guys like Brandon Roy, they’re masters of controlling the game. Just trying to learn as much as I can and working hard.”
