ANDRE MILLER, JEFF PENDERGRAPH TIP-OFF READING MONTH AT GILBERT PARK ELEMENTARY THIS FRIDAY

    On Friday, March 5, two Trail Blazers took a break from developing their game on the court to help some young fans develop their game off the court. Andre Miller and Jeff Pendergraph spent a sunny Friday congratulating the students of Gilbert Park Elementary School in Southeast Portland for reaching their reading goals through the Trail Blazers / Toyota Read to Achieve Challenge. The two NBA stars were joined, of course, by the biggest book worm in the Trail Blazers family, Blaze the Trail Cat.

    After wowing the Trail Blazers players with their ability to make some noise for their home team, the students and staff of Gilbert Park Elementary got down to business learning, “Secrets About Blaze” (confidential: his favorite book is Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss) and participating in a faculty vs. students competition for a team autographed pennant in a giant tricycle race (the students won, of course).

    On behalf of the Trail Blazers, Toyota and Burger King, the players also presented the school with a new collection of books to add to their library, a 09-10 Trail Blazers team autographed ball to use for fundraising efforts, and a free Burger King Whopper for every student.

    March is Reading Month, and the Portland Trail Blazers and Toyota are doing their part to encourage reading among local area youth. The Trail Blazers will host a series of Read to Achieve assemblies throughout the month. Please visit www.trailblazers.com/makeitbetter for continuing updates.
