Oregon Historical Society to Celebrate 35th Anniversary of Trail Blazers' NBA Championship
06/04/12
Written by:

The Oregon Historical Society will pay tribute to the 35th anniversary of the Portland Trail Blazers' NBA Championship in 1977 with an event dubbed "An Evening with The Schonz" on Tuesday, June 5th. Founding broadcaster Bill "The Schonz" Schonely will share his memories of the championship year with the audience.
"If there is one voice that is recognized and brings a smile to Oregonians in every corner of our state it is the voice of Bill Schonely," says OHS Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk. "Bill is certainly the most beloved broadcaster in Oregon history, and we are honored that for one night the Oregon Historical Society will be the home of 'Rip City.'"
Trail Blazers Founder and President Emeritus Harry Glickman and former Trail Blazers forward Bob Gross will also be in attendance. Gross was a key member of the championship run, leading the Trail Blazers in scoring in both Game 5 (25 points) and the clinching Game 6 (24 points) of the 1977 NBA Finals.
Tickets to the event are $10 (free for OHS members) and will be available at the Oregon Historical Society starting at 6 p.m. on the day of the event. Space is limited, so fans are encouraged to RSVP to communications@ohs.org or call 503.306.5214 to RSVP.
A limited number of Bill Schonely t-shirts will also be available for purchase at the event.
About the Oregon Historical Society
Since 1898, the Oregon Historical Society has served as Oregon's primary research collection and museum about Oregon history. OHS has an extensive collection of historical pieces, including over 85,000 artifacts and 3 million photographs and films. It safeguards and presents Oregon's history through a museum, research library, traveling exhibits, school programs and website content.
About the Portland Trail Blazers: Members of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Portland Trail Blazers were founded in 1970 and purchased by Paul G. Allen in 1988. The team's rich heritage includes 29 playoff appearances, three trips to the NBA Finals, an NBA championship in 1977 and a commitment to community service and sustainability. With a corporate mission to make it better in the community, the Trail Blazers strive to help children and their families throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington live, learn and play. The Trail Blazers are the first and only professional sports franchise to receive the prestigious National Points of Light Award for excellence in corporate and community service. The Trail Blazers home arena, the Rose Garden, became the first existing professional sports venue in the world to receive LEED Gold Certification. The team is also one of the founding members of the Green Sports Alliance. For more information, visit
