Month-long initiative includes honorees, school visits and a city tour

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers will celebrate Black History Month through a variety of events during February. The events include: honoring three outstanding African-American citizens at Trail Blazers home games, partnering with the Portland Jazz Festival to make school visits, a tour around the city with Marcus Camby, Andre Miller and middle school students and a Black History Month Icon Panel Event at Nike with Trail Blazers President, Larry Miller. Each event is outlined below:

African-Americans in Portland have made a sizeable contribution to the city’s development since the time of the pioneers, literally keeping the city running with their invaluable work in the railway industry and the World War II shipyards.

Trail Blazers veterans Marcus Camby and Andre Miller will board a bus with 30 middle school students from Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) to take a guided tour around Portland to include African-American heritage, culture and history in the city, via Travel Portland.

Tour will begin at Rose Garden on Feb. 9, and will run from 2 – 4 p.m.

Continuing the tradition of honoring local African-Americans for their service in the community, the team will recognize three outstanding citizens at home games this month. Each honoree will receive a $500 stipend grant directed to the charity of their choice, and will be featured in-arena throughout the game.
