Trail Blazers to Celebrate Black History Month

Month-long initiative includes honorees, school visits and a city tour
Portland, Ore. – The Portland Trail Blazers will celebrate Black History Month through a variety of events during February. The events include: honoring three outstanding African-American citizens at Trail Blazers home games, partnering with the Portland Jazz Festival to make school visits, a tour around the city with Marcus Camby, Andre Miller and middle school students and a Black History Month Icon Panel Event at Nike with Trail Blazers President, Larry Miller. Each event is outlined below:
EVENT DESCRIPTION
African-Americans in Portland have made a sizeable contribution to the city’s development since the time of the pioneers, literally keeping the city running with their invaluable work in the railway industry and the World War II shipyards.
Trail Blazers veterans Marcus Camby and Andre Miller will board a bus with 30 middle school students from Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI) to take a guided tour around Portland to include African-American heritage, culture and history in the city, via Travel Portland.
LOCATION & DATE
Tour will begin at Rose Garden on Feb. 9, and will run from 2 – 4 p.m.
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Continuing the tradition of honoring local African-Americans for their service in the community, the team will recognize three outstanding citizens at home games this month. Each honoree will receive a $500 stipend grant directed to the charity of their choice, and will be featured in-arena throughout the game.

EVENT DESCRIPTION
The Trail Blazers have partnered with the Portland Jazz Festival for the second consecutive year, teaming up for three school visits with Trail Blazers players and/or Alumni Ambassadors and two national anthem performances by Jazz Festival artists at Trail Blazers home games.

EVENT DESCRIPTION
Trail Blazers President Larry Miller will be a featured speaker at Nike’s Black Employee Network as they celebrate Black History Month with a panel discussion, A Call to Greatness. The panel, which also include former WNBA MVP Lisa Leslie, will be moderated by former NBA Champion and current TNT Analyst Kenny Smith.
