Wesley Matthews Named To Rookie/Sophomore Game

    PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Trail Blazers sophomore guard Wesley Matthews was selected to play in the 2011 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam at All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, it was announced today by a vote of NBA assistant coaches.

    The game, which matches nine rookies against nine sophomores, will tip off Friday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. (Pacific), and will be broadcast live on TNT from STAPLES Center.

    "I'm honored to be a part of All-Star Weekend and look forward to representing the Trail Blazers," said Matthews. "I'd also like to thank my coaches and teammates for making me feel welcome in Portland and putting me in the best position to help the team win."



    This season, Matthews leads all sophomores with 86 3-pointers made and ranks second in free throws made (154). Among qualified second-year players, the Trail Blazers guard ranks second in scoring (16.1), fourth in steals (1.26) and fifth in minutes per game (33.1).

    "Wesley works hard, plays hard at both ends of the floor and is a big reason we are competing for a playoff spot right now," said Trail Blazers Head Coach Nate McMillan. "I'm happy to see him get recognized for everything he does, and he's earned it."

    The first-year Trail Blazer is Portland's third-leading scorer at 16.1 points per game, and has added 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists while playing in all 47 of the team's games (34 starts). Matthews has scored 20 points or more in 17 contests and led the team in scoring on 15 occasions.

    Matthews' appearance in the game is the ninth by a Trail Blazer, joining rookies Arvydas Sabonis (1996), Kelvin Cato (1998), Alvin Williams (1998), Brandon Roy (2007), Greg Oden (2009) and Rudy Fernandez (2009). Roy (2009) and LaMarcus Aldridge (2009) were voted to the game as sophomores.
