Lillard Scores 18 In BBVA Rising Stars Challenge

    Damian Lillard had a solid showing in his first All-Star weekend performance with 18 points in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, but Lillard's team, Team Shaq, lost to Team Chuck 163-135 at the first major event of the weekend at the Toyota Center.

    Team Shaq were considered by most to be the favorite to win the Rising Stars Challenge with a team comprised of Lillard, Kyrie Irving and Andre Drummond. But Team Chuck, led Denver second-year forward Kenneth Faried, jumped out to a 90-66 lead in the first half and cruised to the easy victory despite their "coach," NBA great and TNT broadcaster Charles Barkely, not showing up for the event.

    "From the jump (Team Chuck) came out and played harder than us," said Lillard. "I thought we came out a little bit cool. It was an All-Star-type game, hardly any defense but they played more than we did."

    Lillard put on a good show with a couple of dunks and some of his signature long-distance shooting, but despite being a part of so many dramatic comebacks in games that actually count, the rookie point guard out of Weber State wasn't able to do the same in a ultimately meaningless contest.

    "I could have made a lot more shots. Freelance game, so shots are easier than in a regular game. But I missed some layups, I missed a dunk that I should have made -- the ball came out of my hands. I just missed shots."

    Kenneth Faried was named the game's MVP for Team Chuck as he scored 40 points. Kyrie Irving scored 32 points for Team Shaq. 

    Damian Lillard will be participating in the Taco Bell skills competition tomorrow as part of the All-Star Saturday night competitions beginning at 5:30 PM on TNT.
